How to make Long Grain White Rice in your Instant Pot

I typically make 1-2 cups of white rice in the Instant Pot. The ratio that I find best is 1:1.25 rice to water. There are many recipes out there that recommend 1:1 ratio of rice to water. I personally think it needs that extra moisture.

Multiply this ratio to make more than 1 cup of white long grain rice in your Instant Pot.

Secrets Of Making Fluffy Rice Every Time

  • Rinse uncooked rice under running cold water to get rid of the extra starch.
  • Toast rinsed rice with a little bit of unflavored oil before adding the cooking liquid.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to the cooking water.
  • If cooking on the stovetop, let all the cooking water evaporated, reduce heat to low, cover, and cook until rice is tender.
  • When cooking in the pressure cooker, let the water bring to a boil before securing the lid. Cook for 8 minutes. Natural release for 5 minutes and then quick release. Fluff with a fork and serve.

How To Make Perfect Instant Pot White Rice

What is great about the Instant Pot is that it sint just a pressure cooker. Every Instant Pot model also includes a rice cooking function. It also makes it easy to make differing amounts of rice. In the InstaPot, you can often make a smaller amount than you could in most dedicated rice cookers. Simply use a water to rice ration of 1 cup rice to 1 cup of water.

The secret to fluffy rice that does not stick is to rinse it well before cooking. Immerse the rice in water, stir until the water turns milky, and drain. Repeat, and then run under water a bit longer to completely rinse. This removes the excess starch that can cause rice to get sticky.

Another tip is to add about 1 teaspoon of oil to the pot for each cup of rice. This also prevents sticking and reduces foam from the cooking rice. A bit of salt adds flavor. Use the Rice setting for white rice. For brown rice, use the high pressure cooking setting and cook for 22 minutes.

Why Is My Rice Dry

The best way to reheat rice & how to cook Instant Pot Rice ...

If your rice is dry, the ratio of rice to water is off and theres not enough water. When youre experimenting with different kinds of rice, keep this in mind! Different kinds of rice absorb different amounts of water.

Another reason why your rice could be dry is if you leave it in the Instant Pot too long after cooking.

The keep warm mode will continue to heat the rice at a low temperature. This can occasionally dry out or burn the rice if you leave it too long.

How To Make Pressure Cooker / Instant Pot White Rice

White rice is SO quick and easy to make in your pressure cooker. However, this recipe will work in ANY brand of electric pressure cooker, including the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi, and Mealthy MultiPot.

This is the recipe Ive made the most in my pressure cooker. In fact, I havent cooked rice on the stove since I tried this recipe.

I adapted the recipe for the electric pressure cooker from the Three-Minute Spiced White Basmati Rice recipe in the Veggie Queens ebook , The New Fast Food. The pressure cooker really is the best way to make fast food.

This white rice recipe works well with basmati, jasmine, short and long grain white rices.

Brown Rice In The Instant Pot Some Special Considerations

Most of the instructions for Instant Pot brown rice will be the same as white rice, except that cook time doubles, and you may need to fiddle with your water ratio as well.

Most brown rice calls for 45 minutes of cook time on the stovetop, and the Instant Pot can pretty much cut that in half. Somewhere from 20 to 28 minutes will be the sweet spot, depending on if you have short- or long-grain brown rice. I am generally able to get mine done at 22 minutes on low pressure.

Pro Tip: wherever you store your rice, leave a note for yourself about the water ratio and the number of minutes.

For example, we buy rice in huge, Costco-sized bags and pour each variety into a different glass jar in our kitchen. On the outside of that glass jar, it says, 1 cup rice, 1 1/4 cups water, 20 minutes IP. That way, I never have to look anything up.

How Much Rice Can You Cook In An Instant Pot

The recipe below is for cooking 2 cups of rice, which will yield about 6 cups of cooked rice. The water to rice ratio and cook time stay the same regardless of the amount of rice you are cooking.

You can cook more rice as long as you dont exceed the maximum fill lines on your pot. Rice will expand as it cooks, so you have to account for this:

  • You can double this recipe to cook 4 cups of rice in a 6 quart Instant Pot, which will make about 12 cups of cooked rice.
  • If you have an 8 quart Instant Pot , you can triple this recipe to cook 6 cups rice. This will make about 18 cups of cooked rice.

How To Avoid Mushy Rice

How to make white rice in the Instant Pot

Mushy rice happens when the ratio of water to rice is not perfect. Many in the Instant Pot / Pressure Cooking community like a 1:1 ratio of rice to water. But I prefer a 1: 1 1/4 ratio. 1 Cup Rice to 1 1/4 Cup Water or liquid. This has always given me the best success.

Cooking Time is also important. Over cooking or under cooking can leave you with rice you prefer not to eat. And different varieties of rice require different cooking times.

Always fluff your rice! Fluffing rice is simple. Use a fork to gently lift the rice and separate right after cooking. It also helps to turn the Instant Pot off after the cook and natural pressure release has ended. The Keep Warm setting keeps heat on the bottom of the rice which will make the rice stick to the pot.

With such a fast and easy way to make rice, youll probably see it in your diets a lot more too! But thats okay, I have a ton of recipes using cooked white rice you can check out and try!

Cooked White Rice is great for serving with stir fry or teriyaki chicken.

It also makes a great dish next to some beef stroganoff! Even the leftover rice is great because it can be used in a fried rice recipe the next day!

What If My Rice Is Too Mushy

You most likely used too much water. 1:1 water to rice ratio is essential for all rice types.

Use the exact same container to measure both rice and water. Some cups are standard American , others are metric and the little plastic cup that comes with the Instant Pot is neither . So do not use different measuring cups to measure rice and water.

Instant Pot Brown Rice

If you have ever cooked brown rice, you know that it can take a long time to cook and often requires a lot of attention while cooking. This is because brown rice has the outer husk removed which provides all of the flavor.

Cooking brown rice in an Instant Pot or other pressure cooker reduces the normal cooking time and is a more efficient cooking method.

Why Is My Rice Always Mushy

If your rice is too mushy for your taste, its because the rice to water ratio is off . Aka, too much water.

When making rice in your Instant Pot, you need to remember there is no evaporation. This means the rice to water ratio is much less than if you cooked your rice on the stove or in a rice cooker.

Cook In High Pressure For 2 Minutes

After testing a few different variations, the best cooking time for short grain rice is 2 minutes on high pressure. Ive also tried using the Rice mode on the Instant Pot, which is set to 12 minutes on low pressure. As both manual and Rice mode takes 5 minutes to pressurize, Rice mode takes extra 10 minutes to cook.

Instant Pot Rice Setting

I always cook rice using the manual pressure cook setting, not the rice setting. The Instant Pot rice program supposedly senses how much rice and moisture are in the pot and sets the cook time accordingly. The rice setting can only be used for white rice. I like to be able to control the cook time myself, so I avoid the preset programs on my Instant Pot.

Why You Need To Rinse Rice:

  • Starch: Rinsing your rice before cooking will help get rid of the extra starch which is found on Rice. This extra starch when cooked causes the rice to become sticky and gloopy. Rinsing will take off that extra starch and insure nice fluffy individual grains of rice.
  • Impurities: No method of preparing rice for the store shelf is perfect. Rinsing your rice will also help get rid of any impurities, such as dirt, left over pesticides and help sanitize your rice making for a healthy meal.

The only difference is the Pressure Cooker makes the whole process faster. The cooking time is only 3 minutes. However, we need to naturally release the pressure for 10 minutes to make sure that all the liquid is absorbed.

The main trick for this recipe is the right water/rice ratio. Thanks to that, your rice will be perfectly cooked without being too mushy.

Is Rice Gluten Free

How to Make Long Grain White Rice in the Instant Pot

Rice is naturally gluten free. However, it can become cross contaminated with other grains that are not gluten free during harvesting, processing and storage.

Rice that has been milled or brown rice may be exposed to barley or wheat while being transported to the facility.

This exposure usually occurs when these goods are being processed in shared facilities on the same transport truck.

If you are conscious about eating gluten free, it is best to purchase rice that has been specifically grown and processed for a gluten free facility or to clean the milled rice thoroughly before using.
