Its important to portion food properly before freezing for the easiest Instant Pot cooking experience. For example, wrap chicken breasts and thighs individually, cut a rack of ribs into 2- to 3-piece sections , and cut big pieces of meat into smaller portions, such as a pork and beef roast for faster and even cooking. If possible, freeze meals in a circular shape thats the same size as the Instant Pot bowl-insert this lets you go straight from the freezer to the Instant Pot with ease!

Instant Pot frozen ground beef is so easy and convenient, and completely saves dinner on those nights you forget to defrost!

I think the ability to cook frozen meat in the Instant Pot is my absolute favourite part about it.

I never remember to take meat out to thaw. I’m terrible at it. Even when I menu plan.

Just can’t seem to always remember to take it out the day before.

And then I’m annoyed when I go to cook dinner and realize that my meat is still frozen solid and I end up having to microwave it. Which never works well.

So the Instant Pot is a lifesaver. Or a dinner time saver at any rate.

Being able to pull a block of frozen ground beef out and have it cooked in less than a half hour is fantastic.

If you haven’t tried cooking frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot yet, you definitely need to!

It’s so easy, and so convenient!

The Size Of The Instant Pot Is Important

Keep in mind, reheating 1 portion of cold soup will not take as long as it will take to reheat a full turkey or chicken dinner. When you hear your friends and family talking about how they can reheat their food in an instant pot in 10 minutes or less, you should know that they are probably not having the same meal as yourself.

A few examples of heating foods in an instant pot:

    • A small portion of soup and sauce takes 1 minute
    • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in an instant pot will take 6 minutes
    • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 26 minutes
    • A whole chicken frozen with veggies can take up to 30 minutes
    • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in the instant pot will take 2 minutes
    • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 20 minutes

The size of the serving is what matters the most.

If you have food frozen in a silver foil container, simply placing it in the steamer shelf of the instant pot will allow the food to heat in no time despite the fact that you just took it out of the freezer. On the other hand, if you have a large dish of pasta frozen in a deep glass dish, it can take it at least 26 minutes to heat.

  • Remember to allow pot to do a natural pressure release when done, at least for 15 minutes natural if not the entire time.
  • Make sure your pieces are broken apart. For example if you have a bunch of frozen chicken legs, dont put them in with 4 stuck together. Break them apart so they cook evenly.
  • Then lets move on to an Instant Pot frozen whole chicken! Of course youll want to choose one that doesnt have a bag of inners inside the cavity, but my organic brand doesnt.

Speaking of chicken, we have a lot of Instant Pot chicken recipes here on The Typical Mom blog! It is probably my girls favorite protein to eat.

Using a simple lemon pepper marinade you too can give your pieces tons of flavor this way. Instead of using water, you can use other combinations such as this one. Liquid is a necessity for steaming in a pressure cooker.

That brings us to frozen chicken thighs in Instant Pot and how that is done perfectly. I love this cut because theyre so tender, flavorful, and the cheapest pieces overall.

How Long To Cook Frozen Chicken In The Instant Pot

The cook time for boneless, skinless chicken breasts depends on the weight and thickness of the chicken breasts. Bone-in chicken will take longer to cook. Always cook chicken at high pressure.

The Instant Pot will take longer to reach pressure when you are cooking frozen foods as compared to non-frozen foods. When the contents of the pot are cold it takes longer to heat up and pressurize. So frozen chicken gets a few extra minutes of cook time while the pot comes to pressure.

When the cook time ends, allow the pressure to naturally release for 10 minutes. The chicken will continue to cook during this time.

Here are the estimated cook times for different sized pieces of boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

Instant Pot Cooking Times for Frozen Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts

    • small frozen chicken breasts cook 11-12 minutes at high pressure, plus 10 minutes natural release
    • medium frozen chicken breasts cook 13-14 minutes at high pressure, plus 10 minutes natural release
    • large frozen chicken breasts cook 16 minutes at high pressure, plus 10 minutes natural release

It is always good practice to use an instant read thermometer to check that the internal temperature of the thickest part of the chicken has reached a safe 165 degrees F.

    Instant Pot Frozen Meat Tips

I advise, before you go and download your free Instant Pot Frozen Meat Printable below that you consider the following:

#1 Instant Pot Frozen Meat Size Matters

You cant expect every shape of meat to fit in the InstantPot Pressure Cooker. If you want to be cooking frozen meat in the Instant Pot,then freeze it in easy shapes so that you can easily load it up into theInstant Pot, as and when you plan to cook it.

As well as this weight matters too. You cant expect a HUGE pork shoulder to easily fit in theInstant Pot and cook well. Instead you need to be splitting it into smallersizes as otherwise you can end up with dry horrible meat.

If you are cooking mince from frozen, split it into portionsizes of no more than 450g/1lb otherwise it wont cook in the centre. You canstill cook more than this at once. But place it next to each other in 450gportions.

#2 Instant Pot FrozenMeat Packaging Matters

Remember all those times when you tried to take packagingoff some frozen food and you just couldnt! You spent ages trying to get thoseawful stuck on pieces of silver foil off and it just didnt happen or peeled awayin your hand.

I find that I always got the best results by prepping frozen food in zip loc bags or tin foil containers. This is because you can get the food out of the packaging easily without much frost bite on your part and without the packaging breaking in your hands.

It also gives you the chance to recycle and re use thepackaging for a later time.

Can You Eat 2 Year Old Frozen Meat

Well, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, any food stored at exactly 0°F is safe to eat indefinitely. Does Meat Need To Be Covered With Liquid In An Instant Pot

BEST HACK EVER: Cooking Frozen Meat in the Instant Pot

No, the pork loin chops do not have to be covered with liquid in the instant pot. The idea of making pork chops in the pressure cooker is that they cook with steam. If they are covered with liquid they will boil and thats not the result that we are looking for.

Thats why you only need 1 cup of liquid, which sits on the bottom of the pot underneath the trivet and the pork chops elevated above it.

Why Cook Ground Beef In An Instant Pot

There are several reasons to cook ground beef in a pressure cooker. But my number one reason is that the hamburger becomes so tender and is extra juicy. That flavor is hard to beat and makes all my recipes taste awesome!

Another reason I like to make it in the pressure cooker is that I can make really large batches and freeze them for later use. Then I just grab a bag of frozen ground beef out of the freezer, defrost it a little and toss it in the dish I am making. SO EASY!!!!

When I cook the ground beef from frozen, it is so fast and straightforward to do. Once in a while, I am not great at planning ahead and decide at the last second what to make. This causes problems when the hamburger is frozen solid! Putting it in the fridge takes overnight to defrost it, microwaving the meat sometimes ends up half thawed and half-cooked, and its really not safe to just leave it on the counter.

So, my best bet is to quickly brown it right in the Instant Pot.

Why Cant I Just Use An Oven To Reheat My Food

When there is a lot of food that needs to be reheated, the best option for you is precooking it in a instant pot and then placing it in the oven. Other than that, if you have a frozen meal , you can cook the main meal in the instant pot while the sides get heated in the oven.

It takes longer for food to heat in an oven as compared to an instant pot. If you have a little more time on hand, thaw out your food and heat it in the oven.

Rule of thumb: If your meal takes 45 minutes to heat in an instant pot, it will take 1 hour to heat in the oven.

Can You Overcook Meat In Instant Pot

Frozen Meat in Instant Pot · The Typical Mom

Unfortunately, once you overcook a piece of meat in the pressure cooker, theres no going back. You ll be left with a pile of dry, crunchy, tasteless fibers and no amount of additional pressure cooking is going to put that moisture back into the meat. Well, that doesnt just apply to potatoes, it applies to meat, too.

Can You Cook Frozen Ground Beef In The Instant Pot

You can cook frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot, which is fantastic since it doesnt thaw very evenly in the microwave, and who actually remembers to take meat out the day before to thaw?

    Not me, thats for sure.

Cooking frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot takes about 20 minutes. If your blocks of ground beef are really thick it will likely take a bit longer than that.

I freeze my ground beef in flat, 1-1.5 inch thick blocks and it takes 20 minutes to cook almost all the way through in the Instant Pot.

You can add a few more minutes to get it completely cooked through, but I find its easier to crumble and break up if its still a bit pink in the middle.

It only takes a couple minutes with the saute function to break it up and finish cooking it after the pressure cooking cycle is complete.
