Instant Pot Chicken and Rice | One Pot – 30 min Dinner

From sear to season and everything in between, this recipe really is a snap to make in an Instant Pot!

  • Setyour Instant Potto SAUTE and drizzle the inner pot with 1 tablespoon of oil.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the dried herbs, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Rub the chicken with 1 tablespoon of oil and then season the chicken all over with salt and pepper to taste, and then rub again with the seasoning blend.
  • Add chicken to pot, browning for 1-2 minutes on each side, then transfer the breasts to a plate.
  • Next, add the butter to the pot. Once its melted, stir in the garlic, then the rice along with the other dried herbs and salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the chicken broth.
  • Finally, set the steam rack in the pot with the handles up. Place the chicken on the rack. Add the lid, seal, and set to PRESSURE COOK or MANUAL for 5 minutes. Let the chicken and rice cook through the timer then do a natural release for 5 minutes, then remove the lid. Take the chicken out and transfer it to a plate.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over chicken and rice, and serve.

    To prevent the burn error, first layer the browned chicken and chopped carrots at the bottom of the pot.

    Then, add 1½ tablespoons regular soy sauce and 2 cups Jasmine rice in Instant Pot.

    Pour 1½ cup unsalted chicken stock in Instant Pot.

    Layer quartered tomatoes on top of the chicken thighs and rice in Instant Pot.

    With Venting Knob in Venting Position, close the lid, then turn Venting Knob to Sealing Position.

    Pressure Cooking Methods:

    • Chicken Thighs: Pressure Cook at High Pressure for 7 minutes, then Natural Release for 12 minutes.
    • Boneless Chicken Breasts: Pressure Cook at High Pressure for 5 minutes, then Natural Release for 12 minutes.

    *Note: White meat will come out drier than dark meat due to having less fat.

    After 12 minutes, release the remaining pressure by turning Venting Knob to Venting Position.

    When Floating Valve drops, open the lid carefully.

    Ta da! The chicken rice smell so good and comforting~

    If you like, you can shred the chicken, then add the shredded chicken back into the rice.

    Faqs For Instant Pot Chicken And Rice

    Can I use frozen chicken thighs?

    I would not recommend it. Some people have had good luck with this, but I have had mixed results. For best results, I recommend fully thawed chicken.

    Can I use another type of rice?

    Yes, as long as it has a similar cook time to jasmine rice. For example, white basmati rice should work well in this recipe. Brown rice may not work as well since it typically has a longer cook time.

    Can I use chicken breasts in this recipe?

    I probably would not recommend it. Why? Chicken breasts have a significantly lesser cook time, and they would likely dry out.

    Can you put raw chicken in the Instant Pot?

    Yes! I have many recipes that do this. For this particular recipe, I recommend the sauté as written in the recipe instructions. This will give you best results.

    Can I add parmesan cheese?

    Of course! The dish is already delicious as is, so dont worry if you do not have any. But if you want to add some, it will be delicious.

    Instant Pot Chicken and Rice is the perfect one-pot dinner recipe. A delicious comfort food to enjoy all year round! Make either chicken breast and white rice or chicken thighs and brown rice.

    Save on time and dishes with this quick and easy recipe made entirely in the electric pressure cooker. Two of my most popular Instant Pot recipes areInstant Pot Riceand Instant Pot Chicken. So I decided to combine the two and make a one-pot meal out of both.

    The advantage of a pressure cooker is that water doesnt evaporate. Grains like rice and chicken can be cooked together perfectly because you use less water for the rice while the chicken sits on top and gets cooked with just the steam. The result is a super-duper tender and juicy chicken and fluffy rice.

    If you dont have an Instant Pot though, you can still enjoy this delicious recipe by making regular 1-Pot Chicken and Rice on the stove.

    How To Make It

  • Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add the butter and let it melt before adding onion and garlic. Sauté for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the chicken and stir. Cook until the chicken is no longer translucent. Add in the rice, broth, and lemon juice and stir well. Make sure nothing is sticking to the sides, and scoop the chicken pieces to the top.
  • Close the lid and set valve to Sealing. Cook on high pressure for 8 minutes.
  • After 8 minutes, let naturally release for 2 minutes, then Quick Release the rest of the pressure. Stir everything well and season with Parmesan, salt, and pepper to taste.

    Instant Pot Chicken Broccoli And Rice

    Turn Instant Pot onto saute. Add butter and heat until hot. Add chicken, onion, and garlic.

    Cook chicken mixture until onion starts to get translucent. Add rice, broth, and seasonings.

    Cook on manual high pressure for 5 minutes and let naturally release for 5 minutes.

    Immediately add milk and broccoli, mix well.

    Add cheese and stir until well combined. Serve immediately.

    Instant Pot Chicken And Rice With Butter Garlic & Herbs

    Making Chicken and rice in Instant Pot is easy and convenient. No need for cleaning multiple pans or spending hours in the kitchen. Make it in the instant pot from start to finish in just 20 minutes.

    Start with seasoning Chicken. Seasoning Chicken well and browning helps in developing flavour. I have used chicken thighs but you can also use chicken breast instead.

    Next is to caramelize onion and a lot of garlic in butter, which again adds lots of flavours. You can use Olive oil instead of butter, but believe me, it will not be the same. So for once keep your worries about calories aside and use butter.

    I have used a mix of herbs Oregano, thyme and parsley. But you can use any of your favourite herbs.

    Using Chicken Stock instead of water makes the flavour robust. Use water or a mix of water and stock instead.

    How To Make Instant Pot Chicken And Rice:

  • Sauté. Add oil to your instant pot and sauté the chicken thighs for a few minutes on both sides. Remove the chicken to a plate. Add onion, bell pepper, garlic, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt, pepper and tomato paste to the pot and sauté for 2 minutes.
  • 2. Add remaining ingredients. Add white wine to the pot to deglaze the pan, and cook for about 1 minute until most of the wine has evaporated. Add rice, chicken broth, and bay leaf and stir to combine. Place chicken thighs on top of the rice mixture and turn your instant pot off.

    3. Cook. Set the Instant Pot to cook on manual, high pressure, for 15 minutes. When the timer beeps allow the pressure to naturally release for 15 minutes before removing the lid.

    4. Add Peas. Remove the instant pot lid and pour the frozen peas on top of the mixture. Return lid and allow to rest for a few minutes.

    5. Serve. Remove the chicken to a plate. Gently fluff rice with a fork, and serve garnished with chopped cilantro or parsley.

    I doubt youll have leftovers of this tasty dinner, but if you do, store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 2 months.

    My family loves this meal served with warm cooked tortilla on the side, and I always add a drizzle of hot sauce over my rice. Yum!

    I already have a pressure cooker rice and chicken on the blog but it uses boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Todays recipe, I am sharing with you how to perfectly cook bone-in chicken thighs with rice in your instant pot without the rice turning mushy or the chicken overcooked.

    You can also use chicken legs for this recipe. Chicken legs or quarter is a combination of thighs and the drumstick.
