Mastering Wild Rice In The Instant Pot:
- Rinse: Use a fine mesh strainer to thoroughly rinse the rice. I often use my hand to move the rice around and make sure it all gets rinsed.
- Cook: Combine rice, water, butter and salt in Instant pot. Lock the lid and secure the vent and cook on high for 15 minutes.
- Release: Let the pressure release naturally. Carefully remove the lid and fluff with a fork.
Season To Your Tastes
Just like on the stove, you can cook rice in the pressure cooker with broth or water, use as much salt as you like, and add extra seasonings, a pat of butter, or a little olive oil for extra flavor.
What I Do: I sometimes sauté a little garlic in olive oil before adding my rice and broth, which turns a basic pot of grains into a flavorful side dish! You can also use seasonings such as turmeric and coriander for some Indian-inspired basmati rice, or chili powder for rice to tuck into burritos.

Do You Need To Wash Or Rinse Jasmine Rice
It is definitely recommended to rinse rice before cooking because it helps remove dirt and debris in the rice and also remove excess starch on the grains. Make sure to note that if your jasmine rice is made with enriched nutrients like iron, niacin, or folic acid, washing too much of your rice will wash away these nutrients.

Pressure Cooking Requires Liquid
Before we continue, we must mention the most important aspect of pressure cooking. It requires liquid. This is because the pressure is built by the steam accumulating inside the pot, which is produced from the liquid.
Whether youre cooking rice, chicken breasts, pot roast, carrots, stew or cheesecake, you will need at least a cup of liquid for the Instant Pot to do its job.
This is a total amount of liquid and can be in the form of water, stock, tomato sauce, juice, wine and liquids released from the food while cooking , or a combination of those. Amount of liquid required varies depending on the recipe and amount of food but as a rule of thumb, 1 cup is always a good starting point. Also, the food doesnt need to be completely covered or submerged in liquid to cook.

Rice Sticking In Instant Pot
If your rice is sticking to the Instant Pot, check that youre not doing either of the following:
- Leaving the cooked rice in the rice cooker too long after it is done pressure cooking. Leaving it on keep warm mode for too long after cooking will dry out the rice quickly, and itll stick to the bottom of the pot.
- Not using enough water. If your water ratio is off, the rice will absorb the water too quickly and will burn and stick to the bottom of the pot.

How Long Does Rice Take In The Instant Pot
- 5 minutes for white rice, followed by 10 minutes NPR.
- 15 minutes for brown rice, followed by 15 minutes NPR.
NPR stands for Natural Pressure Release, which means simply let the Instant Pot sit untouched after the cooking time is up. On the display, if it reads L00:10, it means its been 10 minutes NPR. Then you turn the valve to venting to release the remaining pressure before opening the lid.
Its important to let pressure cooker release pressure naturally for the specified time, because its still part of the cooking time.
Should You Rinse The Rice
Rinsing your rice before cooking can help remove some of the excess starch. Some people believe this excess starch may lead to sticking and getting the dreaded BURN notice on the Instant Pot.
So, while this may seem like an unnecessary step that adds time and a dirty strainer, we highly recommend it! It will be worth it if you want your final product to be fluffy rather than gummy.

Exactly How Long Do I Cook The Rice
While the exact amount of water you use depends on how you like your rice, the exact length of time you cook your rice depends upon your specific conditions. For example, altitude can make a big difference. If you are cooking a large amount of rice, you may need to add a few extra minutes to the cooking time. Thats why we provide a range of times for different varieties of rice.
The goal is to stop cooking when all the water has been absorbed by the rice. If you open the cooker, give it a stir, and find theres still unabsorbed water in the inner pot, then youll need to cook it a bit longer.
How Long Does White Rice Take In The Instant Pot
White rice cooks in just a 4 minute pressure cooking cycle. Keep in mind, that it typically takes up to 10 minutes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure, and youll wait another 10 minutes for the pressure to naturally release, so this could take 24 minutes in total but most of that time is completely hands off!
The benefit of cooking Instant Pot white rice is that you dont have to wait for water to come to a boil on the stove, and you dont have to watch the rice as it cooks to make sure it doesnt stick to the pot. If you forget about your rice while youre doing something else in the kitchen, it will still turn out perfectly because the Instant Pot switches to a keep warm setting when its done.
An electric pressure cooker is a busy persons best friend especially if you get distracted easily. It makes cooking rice fool-proof!

The Ratio For Water To Rice Is 1 To 1
The golden rule for the ratio for Japanese short-grain rice to water is 1 to 1.1 or 1.2. So if the rice is 180 ml , you will need 200 ml water.
However, when the rice is cooked in the Instant Pot, the steam does not escape from the pressure cooking. Therefore, the best ratio for the rice to water is one to one.

Instant Pot Brown Rice Method: Rinsed 26 Minutes High Pressure Quick Release
- Rating: 4/10
- Timing: 40 minutes, including 8 minutes to come to pressure
About this method: This rice-cooking method, which comes from Instant Pots own database, is the one youre most likely to see in your Instant Pot manual. You start by combining 2 cups of rinsed rice with 2 cups of water, but rather than using the rice function, Instant Pot suggests using the manual function and cooking the rice under pressure for between 22 and 28 minutes. We split the difference and went with 26 minutes. After a quick release, the rice is ready to eat.
Results: This method took the least amount of time to come to pressure just 8 minutes, thanks to less water but left us with overcooked grains and excess water in the pot. The worst of both worlds! The rice was edible once we drained it, but it didnt hold up well to reheating the leftovers were more like porridge than rice.
Instant Pot models vary, which is why the recipe gives a range of cooking times. The issue is that the recipe didnt offer any guidance about which times might be best for your cooker, which leaves the cook guessing. A shorter cook time of 22 minutes in our Instant Pot Max might have produced perfectly cooked rice, but who wants to experiment with seven different cooking times to find the right one? Luckily, many other recipes had much shorter cook times and performed better under pressure.

Steps to make instant rice in the panPut the oil in the pan together with the washed rice, water and salt. Lock the lid and set the steam valve to seal. Cook steamed rice for 4-8 minutes or according to the cooking schedule below. Let the pressure drop naturally for 10 minutes and then release the remaining pressure.
How To Make Brown Rice In Instant Pot
To make your Instant Pot brown rice, add the ingredients to your pressure cooker.
I like using a 1:1.5 ratio of rice to water. So, if youre using one cup of rice, use 1 1/2 cup of water.
If your rice tends to stick to the liner, you can prevent it by spraying some cooking spray in the liner before adding your water and then the rice. Make sure you do not stir the rice when you do this!
After you add the rice to the Instant Pot, lock the lid, turn the knob to sealing, and then press the manual or pressure cook button. Adjust the time to 15 minutes.

How Much Water Do I Add
You can cook any kind of rice in your pressure cooker, long or short grain, brown or white. No matter what kind of rice Im cooking, I use the same 1:1 ratio of rice to water or broth.
This is probably less water than youre used to using for cooking stovetop rice, and thats because theres very little evaporation when youre using the pressure cooker. This ratio produces fairly firm, separate grainsyou can add a little more water, maybe about 1/4 cup extra, if you like softer rice.
What If My Rice Is Too Hard With A : 1 Ratio
If your rice is hard or uncooked that doesnt mean next time it needs more water, that means, next time it needs more TIME. Did you wait for FULL natural pressure release?
Unfortunately, you cannot save undercooked rice in the Instant Pot as putting the lid back on and turning the pot back on just leads to the dreaded burn warning. I recommend adding the undercooked rice to a soup or stew maybe 5 minutes before its done simmering.

Do I Have To Use Natural Release Of The Pressure
Yes, you do.
Waiting for the pressure to drop naturally avoids the problem of rice sticking to the bottom of the inner pot.
If you are in a hurry, we recommend using Natural Release for 10 minutes before releasing the rest of the pressure using Quick Release. Just dont touch the steam release until at least 10 minutes have passed. Not if you want perfect rice, anyway.
Instant Pot Rice Setting
I always cook rice using the manual pressure cook setting, not the rice setting. The Instant Pot rice program supposedly senses how much rice and moisture are in the pot and sets the cook time accordingly. The rice setting can only be used for white rice. I like to be able to control the cook time myself, so I avoid the preset programs on my Instant Pot.
