Camping With An Instant Pot: Instant Pot Cabbage
When we started RVing and cooking out of our camper kitchen, nostalgia hit and I wanted to make cabbage to go with our meals. Our little camper microwave takes forever to cook it up though AND the cabbage would take up WAY too much real estate on our tiny camper grill. We could make our Crock Pot Cabbage, but it is just a little different and takes all day. Instant Pot to the rescue. I can whip up an entire cabbage in minutes and it tastes just like mom used to make. We now make it ALL. THE. TIME. Especially since it is a low carb veggie we can serve up for family dinner for those of us eating low carb meals.

How Do You Freeze Cabbage
Cabbage is tricky. Allow the cabbage to cool completely. Once it is cooled, transfer the cooked boiled cabbage to a freezer safe container and freezer for a couple months.
When the cabbage is ready to be reheated, allow it to thaw out then reheat the cabbage over the stove on medium low heat. Add water if needed.

How Do You Cut Cabbage For Boiling
- Were not really boiling it using this method but you kinda follow the same rules as the traditional method. Youd cut cabbage into 1.5×1.5 squares. Of course this is an approximate measurement but you can see it below for your reference.
- On the stovetop you would bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, then add cabbage. Once it reached a boiling point youd cook for about 5 minutes for shredded cabbage and 8-10 minutes for squares or wedges.
- We cooked for 4 minutes in the pressure cooker and it was perfect for us.
If you like it a bit firmer I would set to 2 minutes with the same 2 minute natural release time.

No. An Instant Pot is a type of pressure cooker. So, you can use it or another brand like the Ninja Foodi to make this recipe. The steps are the same because Im just using the sauté and pressure cooker functions.
You can also make this recipe in a large dutch oven or pan. Just cover the pot with a lid and steam until the cabbage is tender enough for you.

How To Make The Ham And Cabbage Dinner:
What should I serve with the Dinner?-This time I served Pillsbury Refrigerator Biscuits . My mother just always served bread and butter with every meal. A salad would also go great on the side. This dinner is fantastic, whether you use the convenience of the Instant Pot or cook it in a stockpot on top of the stove. It definitely is great cooked all day in a slow cooker/crockpot also. Whichever way you chose, stop back by and let me know how it came out. Did you make any changes or adjustments? Thanks in advance.
Cooking Cabbage In Instant Pot

As I have mentioned, you can cook any vegetable in the instant pot. Whether you want to do instant pot carrots, instant pot broccoli, or even instant pot cauliflower, the instant pot will do an amazing job.
There are two ways for cooking cabbage in Instant Pot, which also applies to any instant pot vegetable:
Instant Pot Boiled Cabbage You cook the cabbage directly in the water in the instant pot inner pot. Imagine that you add water to your inner pot, load it up with cabbage and then pressure cook. But this method is simply a faster version of boiling cabbage on the stovetop.
When you boil cabbage, you lose a lot of its nutrients and it often strips it of flavour and makes it bland. Like when you had cabbage fed to you as a kid and thought not that cabbage mush again!
Though, if you have a lot of cabbage to cook at once, then this can be a great way to feed several people via the instant pot.
Instant Pot Steamed Cabbage In my opinion this is the best option. What you do is use a container to keep the cabbage out of the water. That might be a steamer basket, a trivet or even a spring form pan that is sat on the trivet. You can be imaginative here if you dont have a steamer basket. Or check out our list of the best instant pot steamer baskets.
This method of instant pot steamed cabbage is what we are going to show you in this recipe today.

Step 3: Add the vegetable broth and remaining butter to the instant pot, then place the chopped cabbage on top.
Step 4: Place the lid on the instant pot and set to sealing. Cook on high pressure for 7 minutes. Hit cancel, then do a quick release.

What Size Cabbage To Use
For this recipe, I used a small sized head of green cabbage.
As you can see from the picture above, it only reaches about half way up the instant pot.
If you have a larger head of cabbage, here is what you do to adjust the recipe:
- vegetable broth amount: stays the same. There is plenty of broth in this recipe.
- butter: if you have a bigger cabbage head, consider adding another 1-2 tablespoons of butter to add more flavor.
- cook time: stays the same. It will just take a little longer to come to pressure.

How To Cook Cabbage In An Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
First, add your liquid to the insert. I use 1 cup of chicken broth. Then add your butter and lay your cut cabbage on top.
You can fill your Instant Pot to the top so long as the cabbage doesnt interfere with closing of the lid or touch the lid when closed. The cabbage will shrink when cooking. I do the same thing when I make my Pressure Cooker Collard Greens.
Once youve placed your cabbage in the pressure cooker, cover and cook on high pressure for 6 minutes. Once your timer is done, do a quick release and add your salt and pepper.
