What to Do When You Get the BURN NOTICE! Instant Pot Tips

The pressure level button on your instant pot will let you select your desired pressure level. You may also need to soak and scrub the pot. What do you do when your instant pot says burn? However, if theres a lot of burning, the flavors may have gotten into the remaining food. I had put my ingredients in, and the chicken got stuck to the bottom of my instant pot. Place the inner pot into the base and cover the pot. Make sure that it didnt fall out of place. Usually burn shows up when instant pot is almost or at pressure. Scrape any scorched ingredients off the bottom of the pot and discard. Some instant pot recipes will note times when you can add more water as needed to avoid the food burn warning. Thus when the inner pot reaches temperatures that are very high, the sensors sense the high temperature and shut off the heat displaying a burn message. Switch off your cooker using the cancel button. If youre using an instant pot or another brand with a stainless steel cooking pot, use a strong spoon to scrape dried or burnt food off the bottom of the pot.

This is the first thing that made my instant pot say burn. The instant pot makes dinner a total breeze, and if youre a parent its a lifesaver on busy weeknights when you forgot to plan ahead for dinner. It happens to the best of us! First, make sure there is enough liquid in the pot. Ignore burn for a few minutes and then press cancel.

Why Does My Instapot Say Burn

The instant pot burn can happen when you sauté some onion with oil and then lets say you forget to cancel sauté and then leave the instant pot sat there whilst you prep the rest of your instant pot recipe. It has no oil as the oil has gone and the onion is stuck to the bottom. Though from experience this can happen most when sauteing garlic or ginger, rather than the onion.

Or you are cooking something and as its going to pressure you have not added enough liquid. For example, when I was recipe testing our instant pot green lentil curry, I found that I didnt get the ratio right and the lentils had soaked up the liquid before it went to pressure. This resulted in the liquid being gone and the bottom getting stuck.

Another reason is that your liquid to take it to pressure is too thick. This means that you dont have the right liquid to go to pressure and your food ends up over boiled rather than pressure cooked.

Using dairy too soon can cause this too. That is why I recommend in recipes such as our Ninja Foodi mac and cheese that you add the dairy after pressure cooking. Though in some recipes because the dairy is not a key ingredient you are okay adding it earlier. Such as the butter in our instant pot cabbage.

This can also happen if you need a new sealing ring. An old sealing ring will struggle to go to pressure and result in this problem.

Different Models Of Instant Pot

When it was first launched, there was just one classic model called Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1. It came with an outer pot with button controls and a display screen on the front, the 6-quart stainless steel inner pot and the special lid with steam release handle and the pressure valve.

In the last few years, the Instant Pot company has released multiple new versions and sizes. We have Duo Plus, Nova, Viva, Ultra, and Max to name a few and most of them come in 3 popular sizes 6-quart , 3-quart and 8-quart . There is even a 10-quart version for extra-large batches of cooking. You can see the full range of Instant Pot multicookers on the official website here.

Each new model came with more functions and buttons, more sophisticated display screens and finer adjustment possibilities. The makers have also made some improvements to the lid, so the steam-release handle changed to a simple knob button on later versions.

However, as confusing as all these new models may seem, they all do exactly the same thing cook food under pressure in a controlled, safe environment. In our opinion, the newer models like Ultra and Max seem much more intimidating and overwhelming with bright digits and hi-fi buttons, so we prefer to stick with the classic models. All our website recipes are cooked in a 6-quart Instant Pot Duo or Instant Pot Duo Nova.

Instant Pot Food Burn

The instant pot, whilst it is amazing and I love it, can create a lot of stress when you first get one. You are this instant pot beginner not knowing its ups and downs and getting really frustrated when things go wrong.

I know that because I have been there.

Long before being instant pot experts and sharing 300+ instant pot beginner recipes and having a best selling instant pot ebook, we were new too.

We had this brand new instant pot and like many others experienced the now famous instant pot burn message.

This instant pot burn message came up in the middle of making our first ever attempt at instant pot mac and cheese. We were following a recipe and obviously the recipe owner hadnt properly tested it and there was not enough liquid, dairy that shouldnt have been used, the bottom of the instant pot burnt and that burn notice buzzed at us before the instant pot shut off.

That was back in 2016 and there was not much information about the instant pot burn error, why it happens or what to do to prevent it, so we had a steep learning curve and now we have not had the instant pot food burn message for at least 2 years and can count on our hand all the times it has happened.

Today on the podcast, I want to run through the instant pot keeps saying burn warning, so that it doesnt happen to you.

Why Does My Instant Pot Says Burn

The challenge with using Instant Pot is that food sits at the bottom of the pot and you cant stir the food as it builds up pressure. Therefore, there are rules to follow to prevent you from burning food in Instant Pot!

Here are the 7 common reasons that trigger the Instant Pot Burn Message:

  • Not enough liquid in the Instant Pot.
  • The liquid in Instant Pot is too thick.
  • Pressure cook cream of milk directly in the Instant Pot.
  • Did not deglaze the bottom of the inner pot.
  • Forgot to turn the venting knob to sealing position.

Once youve removed the food, youll need to clean the bottom of the pot.

If youre using an Instant Pot or another brand with a stainless steel cooking pot, use a strong spoon to scrape dried or burnt food off the bottom of the pot.

How to Deglaze Your Instant Pot – What to do When it Says Burn

If you use an Instant Pot, you know it can cook delicious meals in record time. While Instant Pots can make cooking easier, they also have special safety features that, while helpful, can be confusing at first. One example of this is when the pot reads âfood burn,â which is what happened to me recently. But does that mean your food is actually burning? Turns out, no! It just means that the pot is too hot. The food could potentially burn, but the Instant Pot has the Overheat Protection feature in place, which can help stop that from happening.

Instant Pots are impressively smart with 13 safety mechanisms, including the Overheat Protection feature. Not only does this feature allow the pot to detect when your food is about to burn from the heat, but it also shuts the heat off so your food wonât become ruined and so the pot itself is safe. After taking these precautions, it shows you the âfood burnâ message. Once the pot cools down, it will heat back up and finish cooking your meal. It can trigger this feature five times before shutting off completely.

If you get a burn warning, donât feel bad, it happens! If what youâre cooking doesnât take long, like steel-cut oats, you can usually let the Instant Pot finish its job, knowing it has the overheating feature in place. However, if youâre cooking a recipe that takes longer, you can fix the problem in seven steps.

  • Cancel the cooking and Quick Release the steam.

Issue #: You Have A Very Sensitive Pot

Guys, I can count on one hand how many times I have gotten the burn message after using my Instant Pot like DAILY for three years. It shouldnt happen all the time.

If you are finding that your pot is giving you the burn message over and over, and you have tried the tips above, something might be wrong with your pot.

What To Do If Your Instant Pot Is Displaying The Burn Message

Don’t panic, even though the Instant Pot says “burn”, this doesn’t mean that the pot is on fire. It simply means that your food could be burning. Keep calm, and do this:

  • Turn the Instant Pot off.
  • Quick release the pressure by either pressing down the venting valve button, or by turning it to the venting position.
  • Open the lid on the Instant Pot.
  • Use a wooden spoon to scrape the bottom of the Instant Pot to check if any food is stuck.
  • If no or little food is stuck: Scrape off the stuck pieces with a wooden spoon, then add more liquid to your dish and proceed to cook it.
  • If a lot of food is burnt or stuck: If there is a significant amount of stuck food at the bottom, you might be better off removing the food that’s fine from the top, and placing this in a separate container. Scrape the bottom and clean out the pot, and discard any burnt food. Then, either finish cooking the dish in a pot on the stove top, or add more liquid to the Instant Pot and try again.

    You Overfill The Instant Pot

If you add to much liquid, you may get the burn message.

If you add too much food, you may get the burn message.

I really like the Jasmine rice recipe, since its easy and works every time. But after a while I wanted to diversify, so I added bell pepper. And it was great!

So next time I added bell pepper and broccoli. AndI got the burn message. It turned out it was too much for the Instant Pot to handle this amount of food at once.

Make sure you dont overfill the pressure cooker and that the liquid and the ingredients do not exceed the MAX PC 2/3 line on the Pot.

Make sure you add more water if you are adding more food.

Can I Ignore Burn Message On Instant Pot

Well, if you ask us, you should cancel the program and switch on the venting function. This way, you will be able to clean the food debris at the bottom of the Pot, so that it doesnt ruin your foods taste. On the other hand, if you intend to ignore the burn message, you can because the Pot comes with multiple safety mechanisms.

With this being said, if you dont attend to the burn message for five minutes, the Pot will switch off automatically, going into standby mode. This is a good function because it will literally save your meal. Still, you will need to take the food out and clean the bottom side before you resume cooking. Thats to say because debris will heat up quickly, portraying the burn message again.

    The Meaning Of Burn Message

Burn message is part of the overheat protection system of Instant Pot. This message prevails when the inner Pot is exceptionally hot, signaling that the food at the bottom has started burning. Believe it or not, the burn message is a safety mechanism that saves your meal from actually burning and the Pot to overheat.

When you receive the burn message, the heating will stop, thus stopping the cooking process. There are instances when Instant Pot will cool down on its own and resume cooking automatically. However, it will go on standby for cooling down. This burn message is available in new Instant Pot models as well as 8-quart Instant Pot.

How To Clean Burnt Instant Pot

The best solution you have with your burnt instant pot is some hot soapy water and doing it the old school way, like you would do if you were cleaning your roasting pan after a Sunday roast.

Start first by running some soapy water and adding it to the instant pot and then use your silicone spatula to scrape off any burnt bits that come away freely without a deep soak.

Then allow it to soak for a couple of hours and then scrape again and remove anything you can.

Now inspect your instant pot. It might be okay now with just a wipe clean or it might need to soak overnight like you would with a roasting pan.

This is also why I recommend that you have a 2nd inner pot. Then if you dont burn something or want to cook instant pot recipes straight after each other it makes the process much quicker and effortless.

And that is what I recommend you do next time you get the instant pot burn message and how you can deal with it and then prevent it from happening in the future. Of course, use some common sense, follow instant pot recipes to the letter and be cautious when adding in thick liquids to the instant pot.
