Lesson 4: How to Use “Natural Release” in an Instant Pot

This is when you turn the pressure release valve/quick release valve to “open” or “venting” at the completion of the cooking cycle. This forces the steam to release from the Instant Pot quickly.

When you hear the “beep/s” that the cooking cycle has been completed, immediately switch the pressure/steam release valve to “venting”. This opens the vent and allows all accumulated steam/pressure to release from the Instant Pot right away.

Use caution when switching the pressure release/quick release valve to venting. Use a pot holder or silicone glove to avoid burns and always keep your face/hands away from the steam release valve.

You will know the Quick Pressure Release is complete when you see/hear the float valve drop down. Once that has happened it is safe to open the Instant Pot.

When to use Quick Pressure Release

A Quick Pressure Release means pressure/steam within the Instant Pot is released very quickly so its perfect for foods that are delicate and those that you don’t want to cook longer than the cooking cycle .

How To Do A Pressure Cooker Natural Release

After the cooking cycle finished, wait until the Floating Valve completely drops before opening the lid.

Always turn the Venting Knob from Sealing Position to Venting Position to ensure all the pressure is released before opening the lid.

This pressure release method usually takes 10 25 minutes .

Why?

Since the pressure is released gradually, there is less movement in the pressure cooker. Your stock and soup come out cleaner and food are more likely to stay intact.

Whats the catch?

  • A pot full of stock or soup takes very long to release pressure naturally.
  • If the recipe is designed for Quick Pressure Release, the food may overcook, as the cooking process continues during the natural release process.

How To Make Instant Pot Yogurt Cups

Yogurt cups are a convenient way to portion out your yogurt into individual or smaller servings. After adding the starter culture to the pasteurized or warm milk, carefully pour the milk into your yogurt cups and seal them tightly. Clean the inner pot thoroughly and place the steam rack/trivet on the bottom of the inner pot. Things Not To Do When Quick Releasing

  • Let pressure release under or very close to upper kitchen cabinets. Just unplug and move it a bit if necessary. I know some Instant Pots have short cord. Steam can damage your cabinet doors.
  • Stick your face, arms or fingers right above the steam. Just move release valve to Venting carefully with one finger.

    The Steam setting on the Instant Pot is perfect for cooking vegetables, fish and seafood, tofu and any other food that is suitable to steaming. This function uses Low pressure, which helps to avoid overcooking the food and means that the Instant Pot will come to pressure quicker. You need to use the trivet/steam rack provided to elevate food from cooking liquid. Always use QR to prevent food from overcooking. Below is how to use the Steam setting on Instant Pot.

    • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add a cup of water to the inner pot and place the trivet on top. You can place the vegetables or a piece of fish or thinly sliced chicken on top of the trivet OR you can use an additional steam basket or a round pan with holes that fits inside the pot. A steamer basket might be useful for smaller-sized vegetables or cut-up vegetables to prevent them from falling into the water.
    • Secure and lock the lid. Press the Steam button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at Low pressure for 10 minutes. If you press the Steam button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.

    What Is Natural Release And How To Do It

    Natural Release means that the steam will naturally release from the Instant Pot. You don’t have to do anything for this to happen.

    When the metal valve has dropped then all the pressure is gone. I do recommend to turn the valve to venting before removing the lid.

    This just ensures that all the pressure is released from inside the pressure cooker.

    Doing a natural release will take about 10-25 minutes depending on what you are cooking. The LCD screen on the front of your IP will say L10 or L25, this means that it stopped cooking 10 or 25 minutes.

    Again the time it takes to naturally release depends on what you are cooking. The fuller your inner pot is the longer it will take to release.

    When To Do A Quick Or Natural Release

    Now let’s talk about when to do a natural release. If you are cooking foods that tend to be foamy or have high starch content, then a natural release is best.

    If you were to do a quick release with starchy foods then there would be starch coming out with the steam. This causes food splatter to come out from the pressure release valve.

    If cooking a large volume of liquid say a soup, then it’s best to do a natural release. When cooking most meats it’s best to do an NR as well.

    The slow drop in temperature will help to make the meat more tender.

    Quick Release is great if you want to stop the cooking process, this helps from overcooking your recipe. Vegetables are a great example of when to use QR.

    Natural release takes its own time to depressurize the instant pot. There is no risk of you coming into contact with steam as the pot itself removes the steam.

    Some quick, one-pot meals also call for quick releases as well as pasta dishes.     If you look closely at your pressure cooker’s lid you will see a metal pin and the sealing knob. The sealing knob says sealing and venting.

    When trying to build pressure the knob will need to be set to sealing. Unless you have a new model with a self-sealing lid you won’t have to turn the knob it will seal on its own.

    As you can see in the image the sealing valve is still closed and the metal pin is up. That means the Instant Pot is full of pressure.

    To do a quick release you will need to turn the sealing knob to venting. Or push the knob if you have a self-sealing lid.

    Doing this will release all the steam inside the pressure cooker quickly. Quick Release will only take a few minutes to do.

    When all the pressure is gone from the inside of the Instant Pot the metal pin will dropdown. The pin will do this no matter if you do a quick or a natural release.

    When the pin is down then you can open the lid of the Instant Pot.

    Instant Pot Natural Release Method

    Remember our soda can example? What happens when you wait a bit before opening a shaken or dropped can of soda? I guess nothing happens. It opens very normally. This is the Instant Pot Natural Release Method.

    Waiting 10-30 minutes allows the pressure in the Instant Pot to drop naturally. Once the heat source is turned off, the temperature starts to drop. As the temperature drops, the pressure also drops. Once the Instant Pots temperature drops below 200 degrees, the floating valve will fall to the down position.     First, you perform an Instant pot Natural Release for a certain amount of time, usually 10 or 15 minutes.

    Then you to a Quick Pressure Release to toggle the steam release valve to quickly vent any remaining pressure.

    Finally, you release any remaining pressure by moving the top of the Instant Pot from the sealed position to completely open. Just be careful to do this slowly.
