How to Cook a Steak in the Instant Pot

Instant Pot Ribeye Steak cooked to tender, juicy, and tasty perfection! This pressure cooker steak is a quick and easy way to enjoy your favorite meat without firing up the grill.

Ribeye steaks, like hamburgers, are not something youd normally make in an Instant Pot. The common way to cook them is, of course, on a hot grill or in a hot skillet, but when you live in Texas like me and the weather has been consistently above 100 F the last two weeks, tending a hot grill or a hot skillet is out of the question.

Before I go on about how much I love pressure cooker steaks, let me just say, if you prefer rare, this recipe might not be for you. You can still use the Instant Pot but only the SAUTE function and no pressure cooking needed.

But if youre more on the side of well-done, I promise the Instant Pot is one, if not the best way to cook steaks. It delivers tender, juicy, and oh so flavorful beef to the last bite in thirty minutes!

Different Cuts Of Steak

Filet mignon is cut from beef tenderloin. It is incredibly tender and flavorful. This cut of meat is expensive due to its extremely tender texture.

Ribeye steak is heavily marbled and extra juicy. It comes from the ribs and can be boneless or bone in.

Strip steak is another common cut of beef. It is cut from the short loin.

Sirloin steaks are cut from the sirloin, which is near the back of the animal. These boneless steaks are more affordable than other cuts.

Skirt steak is long and thin. It is cute from the belly. Skirt steak can be incredibly flavorful despite its abundance of connective tissue.

Flank steak is very similar to skirt steak. It is slightly more wide and thick than skirt steak.

There are many other cuts of steaks, but these are the ones I recommend for cooking in the Instant Pot.

Tips For Making This Instant Pot Meal:

  • Ive made this dish a few times since creating the recipe. Occasionally I still get a burn message on my pressure cooker. When this happens, I just give it a few minutes. I dont open the lid, I just wait. After a few minutes, it will begin the cooking countdown and the burn message goes away. So if this happens to you, just be patient.
  • The French Onion Soup can be substituted with a can of Beef Consomme.
  • Also, the cream of chicken soup can be substituted with Cream of Mushroom.

Whats The Difference Between Salisbury Steak And Swiss Steak

Instant Pot Swiss Steak

Both Swiss steak and Salisbury steak are budget-friendly and flavorful, old-fashioned meals that likely bring back memories of your childhood. Both dishes are made with beef and a tasty sauce, but they arent quite the same.

Salisbury steak is made with ground beef that is formed into patties and simmered in flavorful beef gravy.

Swiss steak is made from thin slices of steak that are simmered in a peppery tomato sauce.

What Is The Most Flavorful Steak

Tenderloin is the most tender cut of steak. Also known as a filet or filet mignon. The taste and texture is by far the tenderest cut of beef. Its buttery and mild in flavor.

If using this cut it would take far less time to pressure cook since most want it medium.

Of course you always need liquid when cooking anything in an Instant Pot. I chose to use a mixture of beef broth and onion soup! Yes, it adds a ton of flavor all in one little packet.

How To Make Flank Steak In The Instant Pot

  • Heat your Instant Pot by turning on the saute setting.
  • Season both sides of the flank steak .
  • When Instant Pot says HOT add in 2 Tbsp of oil and then place the steak in the pot. Brown on each side of the steak for 2 minutes.
  • Deglaze the pot by moving the steak out of the way and pouring in some broth to scrape the bottom of the pot.
  • Cover the Instant Pot and pressure cook for 50 minutes with a natural pressure release.
  • Move steak to cutting board and let sit for 5-10 minutes and then slice against the grain.
  • Tip #5 Remove Stuck On Food

If your recipe calls for browning meat or anything else that leaves sediments stuck to the bottom, be sure to deglaze the pot before starting it. Fortunately, this is fairly easy as EVERY IP recipe requires liquid. All you need to do is add some of that liquid after you remove the meat, keep your pot on the sauté function, and work off food residue as the liquid heats up. If you dont, those pieces will continue to burn during the cooking process.

But dont toss out that liquid!! It probably has great flavour and will taste amazing in whatever youre making. Feeling a bit confused about this one? Dont worry, most Instant Pot recipes will tell you to deglaze the pan and now you know why and how!

    What Is Sous Vide

Sous Vide means Under Vacuum in French. The sous vide cooking method consists of sealing your food in an air tight bag and then cooking it in water that is kept at the desired temperature of the finished food. Have you ever wondered why if you want a steak cooked to 140° F in the oven, you have to place the temperature of the oven to 350°F and not the temperature you want your food to be cooked at? Well, thats because air is a terrible conductor of heat. It would take so long for the heated air to bring your food up to temperature, that it would be a dried out mess. Not only that, but because you have to have the oven turned up so high, it doesnt transfer heat well so by the time the inside of your food is cooked, the outside is overcooked.

Water conducts heat much better than air, so it does a much better job of transferring heat to your food. That is why you can bring the water to the exact temperature you want your food at and not higher like you would if cooking in an oven or on the grill. The air tight bag, helps this heat transfer to go directly to the food. It also protects the food inside and keeps all the juices and moisture that is naturally in the food, right where it should be. Thats what makes it different from just placing food directly into a hot container of water. That would work, but all the flavor and juices would seep out into the water. Thats why boiled food doesnt take so good.
