How To Cook Soft Boiled Eggs In Pressure Cooker

  • Place 1 cup of water in the inner pot of pressure cooker
  • ONLY use 1 cup of water for the 6 quart and 1 ½ cups for the 8 quart. Any more water will take longer to come to pressure, overcooking your soft boiled eggs.
  • Place eggs in egg rack or carefully on top of the rack that the Instant Pot came with.
    • Seal pressure cooker.
    • Set cook time to 3 minutes.
    • Prepare an ice bath by filling a large bowl with ice and cold water.
    • After cook time has elapsed, immediately release pressure, by using a wooden spoon or tongs to knock the valve from sealing to venting.
    • Carefully, remove eggs from the pressure cooker and place them in an ice bath. Eggs are VERY hot, so use potholders or tongs if your fingers aren’t made of steel!
    • After eggs have been in an ice bath, until cool enough to handle , remove eggs from the ice bath.
    • Peel and enjoy your PERFECT soft boiled eggs.

    How To Make Perfect Hard

I will never forget my first Easter I spent away from my family.

We were living in Georgia at the time and invited friends over for an Easter Egg hunt and Ham Dinner. While the ham and scalloped potatoes were delicious, the eggs were a complete disaster.

After coloring the eggs, our guests cracked a few open for a snack to find that they were not fully cooked!

But I used the same stove-top method for cooking hard-boiled eggs that I had for years. That method worked MOST of the time, but clearly, it was not fool-proof. And frankly, I became a bit fearful to ever cook hard-boiled eggs again–well at least for company!

    • For soft-boiled eggs : Cook on low pressure for 4 minutes, then quick-release the machine, and plunge the eggs into an ice bath. Peel when cool. I also tried cooking eggs for 3 minutes. They ended up being too soft to peel, with undercooked whites.
    • For medium-boiled eggs : Same process, but for 5 minutes.
    • For hard-boiled eggs : Same process, but for at least 7 minutes .

Now that Ive made this my usual routine when making boiled eggs , its so easy to remember that even I wont have to look it up next time.

How to Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

You guys this really is so simple. All you need to remember is the 5-5-5 method 5 minutes cooking under high pressure using 2 1/2 cups of water, 5 minutes letting the pressure naturally release then 5 minutes in an ice bath. The result? Perfectly cooked hard boiled eggs every time that are easy to peel and taste delicious! Now if you wanted softer boiled eggs, simply set the timer for 3 minutes then do everything else the same way. I also want to note that the Instant Pot does take about 5 to 10 minutes to come up to pressure before it starts cooking, so keep that in mind if you plan on making these in a specific time period.

I do want to note that since were using high pressure to cook these eggs, ever so often youll find a cracked egg or two, but this hasnt messed with the cooking process! The eggs were still cooked to perfection and really only made it easier for me to peel.

    Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs Faq:

How long do hard boiled eggs last? Up to a week in the fridge, if they are unpeeled. Or up to 4 days if they are peeled.

How long to hard boil eggs vs. soft boil eggs? In the Instant Pot, cook the eggs for 5 minutes to hard boil or 3 minutes to soft boil, followed by 3 minutes of natural release, followed by a quick release.

How to peel hard boiled eggs? Just give the egg a gentle tap or roll on the counter to break the shell. Then loosen and peel off the shell with your fingers.

Do older eggs work better? Ive found this to be the case with the stovetop method, but the Instant Pot seems to be more forgiving. I often use just-purchased eggs for this method and they always turn out great!

What size of Instant Pot do you use? I have only tested this method on the 6-quart Instant Pot that I own. Cooking times/amounts may vary with a different size or brand of pressure cooker.

How To Store Hard Boiled Eggs

Peeled or unpeeled hard boiled eggs can be stored in your fridge for up to one week. I usually keep my eggs unpeeled just to keep them as fresh as possible, but if I do peel the eggs, I suggest covering them with a damp paper towel and storing them in a sealed airtight container in the fridge. I dont ever freeze my hard-boiled eggs as they just dont keep well and can get super rubbery and discolored.

As I said before, this is just really great for meal prep because it makes a ton of eggs all at once with little to no effort, easy clean up and everything is basically hands-free!

I hope you all enjoy this method as much as we do and if you do decide to make this or any other Eat Yourself Skinny recipe, please make sure to tag me on so I can see all the yummy things youre eating!

Note about Steamer basket: When I’m cooking 1-6 eggs , the traditional steamer basket works fine. Instant Pot HARD BOILED EGGS Using The 5-5-5 Method

I based my eggs on the popular “5-5-5” method for hard-cooked eggs in the Instant Pot. The idea is to put your eggs into a steamer basket and seal them inside your pressure cooker along with a cup or so of water. It takes about five minutes for the cooker to come up to high pressure, five minutes to cook the eggs, and then five minutes of natural pressure release before removing the eggs from the cookerhence the “5-5-5” method.

I found that this basic formula worked just fine, though it typically takes my pressure cooker closer to 10 minutes before fully pressurizing.

I also decided that I like the texture of 4-minute eggs better than 5-minute eggs. At four minutes, the whites are firm but soft and the yolk is cooked through but still creamy at five minutes, I felt like the whites started to become rubbery and the yolk was a little chalky. Give it a try both ways and see which you prefer.

How Does Pressure Cooking Eggs Work

Cooking eggs in a pressure cooker simulate steam heat cooking but at even higher temperatures. The cold water added to the enclosed pot heats very quickly under pressure, and the temperature rises above boiling point to between 220 to 250°F . This quickly cooks the egg white proteins, rapidly causing the egg white to shrink down away from the membrane and shell, making the eggs easier to peel in most cases.

Making Pressure Cooker Egg Bites Without A Silicone Mold

When I was first starting with the pressure cooker, I made Egg Muffins with individual silicone molds. I liked to use the muffins to make Egg Muffin croissant sandwiches.

The egg muffins reheat really well. I had one for breakfast the next day with a slice of toast, and it kept me satisfied until a late lunch.

If you prefer to make bigger muffins filled with more veggies, try making them in glass custard cups. I plan to try that soon.
