Insulated Glasses Tumblers And Thermal Containers
Plastic and metal insulated cups, tumblers and containers are great for keeping hot things hot and cold things cold. Most are constructed with two layers of material with an airspace between the two. Its that airspace that provides the insulation.
While some containers are labeled as dishwasher safe, many are not. It is best to hand wash both plastic and metal insulated containers. If you decide to place one in the dishwasher, opt for the top rack and skip the high heat of the drying cycle that can cause the seal to break and water to enter the airspace.
To remove coffee stains from the interior of your travel mug, make a paste of baking soda and water. Use a soft brush or cloth to apply the paste and then scrub gently. Rinse well and dry with a soft cloth.

How To Pressure Can Safely
When youre working with a pressure canner, you have two different ways to test your pressure. Youll either have a dial gauge or a weighted jiggler.
If you have a dial gauge, youll want to be sure to take it into the county extension office every single year, and before the first time you use it to be sure its reading the pressure correctly.
If you have a weighted gauge, they work with simple physics principles, so these are always correct.
The problem with the pressure cooker is there is no way to test the accuracy of the pressure your food is cooking at.
Please dont take your familys safety or health lightly when it comes to the safety of preserving your food.
Bottom line, dont can in an electric pressure cooker!
How To Do It
The process for traditional steaming with a glass lid is similar to the pressure steaming process:
- Set up your Instant Pot with your trivet, steaming basket, and at least 1 cup of water.
- Instead of hitting Steam, hit the Sauté button. Doing so will create a steaming environment similar to steaming on the stovetop: the water in your pot will boil, the lid will retain the steam, and you will be able to watch your steaming food inside the pot through the clear lid.
- With this method, you can also remove the lid periodically to check on or stir your food at any point during the steaming process, although you will want to be careful to leave the lid on for the majority of the process, in order to retain steam.
Once your vegetables are sufficiently cooked, simply turn off the pot as normal and remove them, being careful of all of the hot elements in the pot

Clean Your Instant Pot Sealing Ring
The sealing ring is made of durable, heat-resistant silicone that provides the air-tight seal thats critical for your Instant Pot to work properly. You can hand wash the sealing ring with warm, soapy water or run it through the dishwasher. Wait until the sealing ring is dry before replacing it in the correct position.
Another option is to steam clean the sealing ring while its still attached to your Instant Pot. Add one cup of water, a cup of white vinegar and one cut up lemon rind. Run the Steam program for two minutes, then remove the sealing ring and let it air dry.
The sealing ring is critical for maintaining the right pressure in your Instant Pot. Scrutinize it for cracking or tears after each wash. If you see any damage, you should install a new sealing ring. The manufacturer suggests using only genuine Instant Pot sealing rings, as using those from other brands may void your warranty.
Since silicone can pick up food odors and discolorations during cooking, you may want to use one sealing ring for spicy foods and another for sweet foods. An easy solution for getting rid of sealing ring odor is to soak the ring in white vinegar and let it air dry.
How Pressure Canning Works
Pressure canning is a type of canning that you use for low-acid foods. When you have a food thats higher on the pH scale than a 4.6, it is possible that bacteria can survive in it. This is why we have to sterilize the food inside the jar, known as processing, in order to make it safe and shelf-stable.
I want you to always remember that I firmly believe that home-canned food is safe, as long as its safely canned.
In order to reliably kill off any bacteria that could be in your jar, you have to bring the contents of the jar all the way up to 240-250 degrees F.
The only way to do this in a home setting is to do it under pressure. This is where the pressure canner comes in. Adding pressure and pressurizing the chamber of the pressure canner allows the temperature to come all the way up to that safe canning range.
This is something you just cant do with a pot of boiling water.

Wash Instant Pot Sealing Ring
The Instant Pot Sealing Ring is a critical part of the pressure cooker that directly affects the pressure cooking process. So, remember to be gentle and take great care of the ring.
The Instant Pot Sealing Ring is dishwasher safe.
However, we try our best to minimize the number of times we pull the silicone sealing ring out of the lid to avoid stretching or deforming the sealing ring.
Unless its splattered with food or liquid that requires thorough cleaning, we usually gently rinse and dry the sealing ring while its seated in the lid .
*Caution: Dont use the Sealing Ring if it has cracks, cuts, or any other damages.

Before You Jump In Do A Hot Water Test
This recommendation comes straight from the Instant Pot manufacturers themselves and is as simple and filling the pot with water and running a cycle under pressure. Not only will this suss out any defects before you need dinner done in 30 and the pot wont seal, but it also gives the pot a gentle clean too.
What Is Pressure Canning Exactly
Pressure canning is when you preserve food by bringing it to a temperature of 240 to 250 degrees Fahrenheit to eliminate the risk of spoilage from the bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum or botulism for short.
It can be killed at a temperature of 212 degrees Fahrenheit but its spores can survive and spread so they need a temperature of between 240 to 250 degrees Fahrenheit to kill them off.
The Instant Pot Max claims it can maintain a steady pressure of 15PSI which keeps the temperature at a steady 240 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
What this all means is that the jury is still out as to whether you can safely pressure can in an Instant Pot up until the USDA gives it the green light. I would love to hear your comments and questions in the comments section below.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Steak In An Instant Pot
The answer to this question depends on a series of variable factors.
First, we have the shape of the steak. Are you cooking an entire piece or will you cube/shred the meat?
If youre cooking an entire piece , you should also decide on the result youre aiming for . Still, regardless of the case, you shouldnt use thick pieces the heat must be able to penetrate the meat from top to bottom.
For a rare steak, you only need to use the saute function. For medium and well-done you will need to top the sauteing with some pressure cooking.
I like my steak well-done so I usually leave it in the Instant Pot for about 15 minutes, but you should also adjust the time and temperature according to the size of the steak.
What About Water Bath Canning
It is always okay to water bath can in any large pot as long as you have some sort of rack to keep the jars off the bottom of the pot.
Yes, you can use your pressure canner or pressure cooker as that large pot IF you do not seal the lid. Sealing the lid would build pressure and you would no longer be water bath canning.
However given the heaviness and bulkiness of a pressure canner or cooker, you may want to use something more light weight like a stockpot or a good old-fashioned water bath canner.
It is totally up to you.

Baking With Ramekins In An Instant Pot
Just like in the case of French baked eggs, the ramekin-instant pot pair is a great kitchen appliance for baking.
The methods are pretty simple. The ramekins to be used are greased with butter and the ingredients are added afterwards. Two cups of water is added to the pot, followed of course by the trivet. The lid locked and the result is a lightly baked snack.
This is once more proof that ramekins make great culinary equipment.
Will Steaming In An Instant Pot Overcook Food
Its important to understand that, because of the pressure of the Instant Pot, the duration of your steaming will be much different than traditional stovetop steaming.
Its helpful, first of all, to know the Instant Pots automatic time settings:
- If you press only the Steam button, it will automatically steam your food under high pressure for 10 minutes.
- If you press More, this time will go up to 15 minutes
- Pressing Less will steam it for just three minutes.
- You can also change the time manually and adjust the pressure as usual with the Pressure button.
While the steaming process in an Instant Pot can accomplish the same result as steaming on a stovetop, the added pressure of the Instant Pot accomplishes these results much more quickly, in the same way its Pressure settings accomplish many aspects of traditional cooking in less than half the time.
For tougher veggies like potatoes, carrots and other roots, this can be a great time-saver, and there are really no disadvantages. But for delicate foods that are more easily overcooked, like spinach and broccoli, there can be a risk with the Instant Pot of overdoing it.
To compound this risk, unlike in traditional steaming over the stovetop, you are unable to check on the progress of your steaming foods while they are inside a pressurized Instant Pot. You will not be able to see how far they have cooked until the process is completely over.

Can You Cook In A Pressure Canner
An All American Pressure Canner
The answer is: Yes, sometimes.
It really depends upon the food you want to cook and the brand/size of pressure canner you have.
Note: To make things just a little more confusing, Presto also makes cookers and they call their canner a canner/cooker.
The All American Pressure Canning manual states that you should NEVER cook the following foods in the canner: rice, applesauce, beans, cranberries, rhubarb or spaghetti plus any other food you think might foam up.
However, the Presto Pressure Canning manual states that you CAN cook these items IF you only fill the canner half way so that the food can not foam up to the lid.
So to cook in your pressure canner, you must find or look up the manual for your brand and model and verify its use.

Can You Use An Instant Pot Or Other Cooker For Home Canning

I recently saw an infomercial for an Instant cooker appliance similar to the very popular Instant Pot. Such cookers have settings and lids which allow them to be used as a pressure cooker. In the infomercial, the hosts claimed that the instant cooker being demonstrated could be used for home canning. They also claimed the product met USDA standards for canning. This perked my ears up because such claims could be very dangerous.
You may be thinking its just home canning. My grandmother did it. Whats the big deal? Well, not all home canning is created equally. There are two methods of home canning used for two different types of foods.
For your normal run-o-the-mill canning, such as making some jam or fruit preserves, you wouldnt need a pressure cooker or any type of instant cooker. For that, youd just use the hot water bath method. This method, which most home cooks will be more familiar with, is suitable for high-acid foods such as pickles, tomatoes, salsas, and fruits that contain enough acids, especially citrus fruits, but many others as well. You can find information on basic home canning supplies here.
What Happens When You Leave A Glass Of Water Out
When you leave the glass of water uncovered for about 12 hours, carbon dioxide in the air starts to mix with it. After this period, the chlorine in the water dissipates to such a point that bacteria and algae start to grow in it. The growth of bacteria is even high when you store the water in a warm area.

Safety Time Steam Is Hot
Steam is hotter than boiling water, and it can burn you badly. Keep your hand clear of the steam release valve when you do a quick release. Current Instant Pot models have a button that triggers the valve for you, keeping your hands at a safe distance from the valve.
If you have your Instant Pot near cabinets, be mindful when you do a quick releaseit can get a lot of condensation on your cabinets, which can damage them over time. To keep the steam at bay somewhat, you can tent the valve with a kitchen towel during a quick release. Foods like oatmeal, beans, and porridges can sputter goop through the steam valvethe towel trick is handy for those times, too.
