Seasoning For Instant Pot Frozen Chicken

How To Cook Frozen Chicken In An Instant Pot (Instapot)

For my standard frozen chicken breast Instant Pot recipe, I use this seasoning:

  • Paprika
  • Salt
  • Pepper

This recipe will give you chicken that has flavor, but is not overpowering. If you know you are using the chicken in a specific dish, you can season the chicken to match that particular diash instead of using my suggestions.

If your goal is to have prepared chicken ready at all times to add protein to a meal, use this basic seasoning recipe and your chicken will go with anything.

What If My Chicken Isnt Cooked To 165 Degrees

After you release the pressure and open the pressure cooker, be sure to check for doneness. The best way to do this is with a meat thermometer.

If your chicken breast isnt at 165 degrees, you can place the lid back on the Instant Pot and cook on high for another couple of minutes to finish cooking the chicken to the right temperature.

It wont take long since the Instant Pot is already warmed up.

Can You Cook Chicken Thighs That Were Frozen In A Marinade

    Instant Pot Chicken Thighs

I dont recommend freezing chicken thighs in a marinade. Head over here to find out why. Basically, it results in the thighs being in the marinade for too long. This tends to toughen the meat.

Instead, I recommend adding flavor ingredients to the Instant Pot during cooking. The pressure forces the flavors into the meat and the result is delicious. Good additions are a sliced onion, sliced lemon, any herbs or seasonings you like, and/or whole garlic cloves.

There you have it! A new way to get dinner on the table super-quickly. If you try cooking chicken thighs from frozen, let me know how it goes in the comments below. Thanks and have a great day!

Can You Cook Frozen Chicken In A Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker Or Power Pressure Xl

Yes! Both the Ninja Foodi and Power Pressure XL are electric pressure cookers, so they work similarly to the Instant Pot.

For the Ninja Foodi, you can simply follow the Instant Pot instructions Ive outlined.

For the Power Pressure XL, since there is not a Manual/Pressure Cook button, youll have to use a preset button.

In this case, you can use the Soup/Stew button, which defaults to a 10 minute cook time , and if you want to adjust the time to 12 or 13 minutes for larger chicken breasts, use the Adjust button to add minutes to the cook time.

If the breasts are very large, you could also use the Meat/Chicken button, which defaults to a 15 minute cook time.

Which Pressure Cooker Should I Use

You can use any type of Instant Pot or pressure cooker you like for Instant Pot chicken.

I recommend a 6 quart cooker for a family of 4 because you can cook almost anything you need with it.

If you have a larger family or need to cook larger amounts of food, an 8 quart is a great option.

No matter which size cooker you use, the cooking times will remain the same!

    Ingredients You Will Need

    • Frozen chicken breasts: Up to 3 lbs boneless chicken breasts.
    • Water: 1 cup cold water. You can use chicken broth, pineapple juice or apple cider but it will mostly flavor the broth not the meat.

You can sprinkle chicken breasts with garlic powder, dried oregano, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper etc. But seasonings will not stick to frozen meat well and will end up at the bottom of the pot, making a flavorful broth which then could be made into stock or use in soups.

    What Is An Instant Pot

An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker. It is a multi-use appliance that can cook foods quickly at high pressure. Steam pressure builds up inside the pot, which creates a higher temperature environment that cooks foods faster. Unlike old fashioned pressure cookers, the Instant Pot has many safety features that make it safe and easy to use.

An Instant Pot is a pressure cooker, sauté pot, slow cooker, steamer, rice cooker, yogurt maker and warmer all in one. Ive been amazed at the versatility of my Instant Pot and the flavor and texture of the foods that I am able to cook in it. The high pressure inside the Instant Pot can tenderize even tough cuts of meat. It creates rich, complex flavors seriously, Ive never had better chili than Instant Pot chili!

    Place Chicken In The Pot

If possible, its best if chicken breasts are separated rather than frozen together in a large chunk. Simply place the meat in the liquid with as little overlapping as possible. If your chicken breasts are frozen together, you can either run some hot water over them and wedge them apart with a butter knife. Otherwise, you will need to increase the cooking time. The amount of time to increase will vary depending on how large the pieces are.

    How To Shred Chicken:

There are a couple ways to shred the chicken once it is cooked. Chicken breasts coming out of your pressure cooker are pretty much falling apart without you having to do anything, so you dont need to get fancy.

I prefer to use two forks, because Im lazy and Im not into extra dishes. They do a fine job!

A lot of people will use a hand mixer or stand mixer to shred chicken, but I think its overkill. Who wants a huge stand mixer bowl to wash just for a few chicken breasts? Maybe if youre doing a few pounds at once, it would be worth it.

Be sure to shred the chicken breast in the liquid as it the chicken will reabsorb some of the broth and seasoning as you are pulling it, and it will give you the best results by far!

How To Prep The Chicken For Freezing

Frozen boneless chicken breasts and thighs are commonly sold in the freezer aisle, found in bags, already individually frozen. This is ideal for pressure cooking.

If youre freezing your own chicken parts, make sure you freeze the pieces individually, rather than in a thick, solid block. This way, the chicken cooks more quickly and evenly straight from the freezer.

My favorite way to do freeze my own chicken is to individually wrap breasts or thighs in plastic wrap, freeze them flat on a baking sheet for a few hours, then transfer them to gallon freezer bags. They dont get stuck together, and you can cook as many or as few as you want at a time.
