Where Instant Pot Wins: More Models With More Tailored Features

How to Use An Instant Pot – Instant Pot 101 – DUO CRISP AIR FRYER

“Instant Pot” is an umbrella term. Like a grandmother yelling “or whatever your name is” to a gaggle of grandchildren, the Instant Pot family is so versatile that it can be hard to remember which model does which but that’s a good thing.

The Instant Pot lineup includes the most basic model, the 7-in-1 Duo for $89 while the most advanced is the 11-in-1 Pro Crisp for $249.95. Every Instant Pot can pressure cook, slow cook, cook rice, steam, sauté, and warm, and as the models level up, more sophisticated features are added, like yogurt making, baking, or sous vide.

The models with “Crisp” in the title are obviously the air frying ones. But if you already have an Instant Pot, air frying can be added to most models with the .

Most models are available in the popular 6-quart size as well as a mini 3-quart model and a family-friendly 8-quart model. Instant Pot models vary so widely to the point where they’re almost customizable to your skill and budget.

The best part is that if you don’t need all of those functions, Instant Pot won’t make you pay for them.

The Instant Pot Max also stands out with 15 PSI, which speeds up pressure cooking even more and opens the door for precise pressure canning a must for wannabe chefs, grandmas, and homesteaders who preserve everything possibly. The Foodi maxes out at about 12 PSI.

The Verdict: It’s A Toss

Really, it comes down to how much you want to be able to do with your cooker.

That seems obvious, but there are a few caveats. When deciding between an Instant Pot and a Ninja Foodi, the first piece of criteria is easy: Do you care about air frying? If not, a more basic Instant Pot without the special lid can be purchased for a lot cheaper than a Foodi .

If air frying is important to you, then go with an Instant Pot Crisp model over the Ninja Foodi. Both of these models can do most of the same things, though the Duo Crisp can’t make yogurt and pinning down sous vide with Ninja means paying $100 more than the most expensive Instant Pot.

A well-done roast is Foodi’s wheelhouse. On the other hand, Instant Pot takes the guesswork out of testy dishes like soups, dips, and rice, and offers more versatile features at each price range, letting you opt out of spending more money on functions you won’t use.

Ninja Foodi Vs Instant Pot: Which Multi

BySophie Birdlast updated 26 July 22

Its Ninja Foodi vs Instant Pot here as we pull apart these popular appliances

The first Instant Pot came to market over a decade ago and created a storm in the kitchen appliances market. Since then, multi-cookers have come a long way and though Instant Pot was the first, it didnt take long for other brands to hop on the trend for multi-functional countertop cookers. One of Instant Pots most successful rivals is the Ninja Foodi and both brands have a range of different models to choose from.

The best Instant Pot can replace several other appliances which is part of the appeal of this one pot cooker. In fact most multi-cookers function as a pressure cooker and slow cooker and many others can be used as a yogurt maker, dehydrator, and sous vide, newer models even have air frying capabilities.

At first glance, most multi-cookers can perform the same range of core functions and it can be tricky to figure out if there are any differences at all, particularly if youre new to countertop cookers. Here were comparing Ninja Foodi vs Instant Pot, delving into the features each brand offers, how much they cost, and what you can cook in them.

How To Choose The Best Instant Pot For You

Here are the key things to consider when choosing an Instant Pot:

Features: Some Instant Pot models come with preprogramed cooking functions and even additional capabilities such as Yogurt Making and Sterilization. However, these preprogrammed functions merely mimic low- and high-pressure cooking, and you can re-create them manually. Additionally, we found that some preprogrammed functions were unreliable .

Evaluate the kind of cooking you typically do before splurging on bells and whistles that you don’t need. You should also realize that you may still need to adapt your cooking times to get the results you want. We frequently found that the more features an Instant Pot had, the more confusing the controls were.

Size/capacity: We tested only 6-quart models, as they’re the most popular size on the market. However, many Instant Pots are available in 3-quart sizes, which are better for individuals or couples, and 9-quart sizes, which are better for larger families.

Price: It’s surprising how widely the prices vary for Instant Pots, given that most of them offer the same basic features, give or take a few specifics. Your personal budget for cooking gear will influence your decision on which price is best.

It Cooks Quicker Than An Oven But Not As Fast As An Air Fryer

Instant Pot Duo Crisp Pressure Cooker 11 in 1, 8 Qt with Air Fryer ...

Ive found that when cooking air fryer recipes in the Duo Crisp, youll need to add a few minutes to the cook time. For example, the average air fryer recipe calls for cooking fries at 380°F for about 15 minutes, but I find that in the Instant Pot they need about 20 minutes. However, they still produce a crispier and faster result than the oven, which takes about 40 minutes!

Where Ninja Foodi Wins: Meats

Ninja has been perfecting its TenderCrisp technology for longer than Instant Brands, and anyone picky about balanced browning may feel better with that experience.

But one Foodi model works particularly well for people who do a lot of roasting. The $349.99 Foodi Smart XL comes with a built-in thermometer that operates with the Smart Cook system, which uses four smart proteins settings and nine doneness levels.

The Foodi expertly browns by providing the space food needs to receive consistent hot air.

We’ll also give props to whoever came up with the Foodi’s design overhaul. While the original models were bulky, resembled Pokémon, and took up more counter space than necessary, the later ones are cylindrical like the Instant Pot and look nice.

The new lid is still attached via hinges and can get in the way if you have low-hanging cabinets above your countertop. The regular Instant Pot lid and the air frying lid are completely removable.

After a few uses, I started having trouble with the air fryer basket that is included with the pot. To work around this, I purchased some perforated parchment paper inserts, and theyve made ALL the difference!

Ninja Foodi Vs Instant Pot: Cleaning

You can place the cooking pots from Ninja Foodi machines and Instant Pots in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. Ninja Foodi models have non-stick cooking pots so you shouldnt end up with dried-on bits of food that are hard to get rid of, whereas Instant Pots have stainless steel pots.

As Ninja Foodi machines feature a cooking pot with a non-stick coating, youll have to avoid using any metal utensils with it in case you scratch off this coating.

    Where Ninja Foodi Loses

    Instant Pot

There are fewer ways to “customize” your cooker needs here, both function-wise and size-wise. Despite what seems like 20 different Foodi models, only a few of them are actually pressure cookers. There’s less clear scaling up in terms of what each model can do, and cookers that are dedicated toaster ovens or air fryers are still just called the Foodi just with “XL” or “Deluxe” tacked onto the end. The Foodi doesn’t come in a mini 3-quart size at all.

While you can sometimes score an Instant Pot for as low as $50-ish if you’re fine with only six appliance functions, buying a Foodi locks you into spending at least $169. And it’s a bummer that the Foodi costs so much and doesn’t even have a stainless steel insert. The nonstick coating isn’t as fragile as Teflon, but there are reports of chipping from the metal rack being pulled in and out. Some people also aren’t comfortable with their food chilling in a plastic-y ceramic coating for hours.

Ability To Pressure Cook Then Brown

For me, one of the downsides of the Instant Pot is that food can come out a little mushy at the end. I am loving the ability to pressure cook something, like chicken thighs or carnitas, then switch to broil or air fry mode to crisp. I made some of the best chicken wings of my life a few weeks ago combining the pressure cook + air fry functions!

Instant Pot 9 In 1 Vs 11 In : Conclusion

Instant pot 9 in 1 offers 9 cooking function and ease of use thanks to 15 preprogrammed cooking functions. On the other hand, Instant pot 11 in 1 features 11 cooking functions but it doesnt have any one touch smart cooking presets and thats what may bother novice cooks. One touch programs take the guesswork out of cooking which isnt the case with instant pot 11 in 1.

From the few videos I have watched on thee things, people were only making 10-15 wings at a time for example. Has anyone made more food than this at once? If I have to make multiple batches every time I use one of these machines, it probably wouldn’t be worth my while. Thanks.

    The Sous Vide Function

The sous vide function has been another big win for me! Ive wanted a sous vide for a long time, but wasnt sure Id use it enough to justify the cost. Essentially, a sous vide allows you to cook a protein to a precise temperature throughout. You know how the end of a large steak is always more done than the center? The sous vide takes care of that problem.

You simply vacuum seal your food , place it in the pot, and let it cook for a few hours. The result? Perfectly-cooked protein that is tender, and the same temperature throughout. You can then give your protein a quick sear to give it a crispy, caramelized crust. I love that searing only takes a minute or two because it prevents me from smoking up my apartment.

A few versions of the Instant Pot have the sous vide function, but instead of circulating water like a traditional sous vide, the Instant Pot simply keeps the water bath at a constant temperature no circulation involved. Id read negative reviews on the function because of this, so I wasnt sure how well it would work. Im happy to say Ive been pleasantly surprised! The sous vide function has absolutely changed my steak and pork cooking game, and Im excited to give it a try with delicate proteins like fish as well.

    Multiple Appliances In One

This was the biggest sell for me, as I live in an apartment and dont have a huge amount of storage space. Im a bit of a kitchen appliance junkie, so Ive had my eye on an air fryer for a long time but couldnt justify the space it would take up, especially since I already own a toaster oven that can produce pretty similar results. The fact that the Duo Crisp combines multiple appliances into one is a huge plus for me!

    How We Test Instant Pots

We lined up the Instant Pot Lux, Duo, Duo Plus and Ultra for a side-by-side comparison in which we evaluated cooking capabilities, time, temperature, controls and the final cooked results. Although each model is available in multiple sizes, we purchased the 6-quart model of each to eliminate any variables related to volume.

We purposely selected these five cooking methods and their corresponding ingredients, as they represent the most common uses for Instant Pots.

    • Soft-boiled eggs: to use the Egg program or Low Pressure setting
    • Long-grain rice: to test the Rice program on each pot
    • Diced onions: to test the Sauté setting
    • Chicken thighs: to evaluate how the High Pressure setting worked
    • Whole pork shoulder: to see how each Instant Pot would sear and braise on the Saute and then Slow Cook settings
