What Is The Best Rice To Water Ratio

How To Cook Perfect Rice in the Instant Pot

Youll be surprised but it is always and for ALL sorts 1:1. Yes, you read that right.

Instant Pot Rice calls for a 1:1 rice to water ratio

You wonder why on the stove different ratios are called for. Well, the secret to rice cooking is that the darker or wilder the rice the longer it needs to cook and the longer something needs to cook, the more water evaporates during the process.

This leads us to the conclusion, that different kinds of rice do not necessarily need different kinds of amounts of water to cook but rather more water to evaporate.

Since the Instant Pot gives a tight seal and high pressure, no water evaporates at all.

So yes, brown rice and even wild rice need the exact same amount of water as white rice in an evaporation-proof environment. *mind-blown*

Rice Sticking To The Bottom Of The Instant Pot

Getting the rice to water ratio correct and adding a tiny bit of fat should alleviate the sticking issue, but if you are still losing rice to the bottom of the Instant Pot, Ive got you covered.

I almost always use a natural pressure release when Im cooking rice, because I start the rice at the beginning of meal prep and have plenty of time to ignore it. I dont have a sticking problem, but if you do, try using a quick release. A quick-release will rapidly expel available moisture in the form of steam.

Once you have it, the Instant Pot is completely fail-proof when it comes to rice.

I love it because I cant boil something over, which happens 90% of the time when Im cooking on the stovetop, even if Im standing right there. I also dont have to worry about fiddling with the temperature, or whether I stir or not, or even setting a timer.

How To Cook Jasmine Rice In The Instant Pot

Its a good rule of thumb to always rinse uncooked rice before you cook it. Place rice in a fine-mesh strainer and run it under the sink of running water. If you dont have a fine-mesh strainer, you can place rice in a bowl of water, swish it around, then drain and do this a few more times until the water is less cloudy. This step helps to remove debris and some of the starch that causes the rice to clump together. Rinsing also helps the rice absorb water faster.

How to Cook Rice in an Instant Pot

Here are step-by-step instructions for making medium-grain and long-grain white rice such as Basmati or Jasmine rice. We used Instant Pot Duo Nova 6-quart pressure cooker for this recipe.;

Step 1. Prepare the ingredients. Wash the rice under cold water 4-5 times to remove excess starch. This will result in fluffier, most separated cooked rice. Use your hand to rub the rice underwater. Strain and add rinsed rice to the inner pot.

Step 2. Add water and salt and stir. Pop the lid on top, secure and lock in place.;

Step 3. If using classic Instant Pot Duo, check that the steam release handle is pointing to Sealing. Select Pressure Cook button . Make sure the pressure level is set to HIGH and use and + buttons to adjust the time to 4 minutes. If you need to change from LOW to HIGH, press Pressure Level to toggle between settings.; You can leave the Keep Warm default setting on.;

After 3 beeps, the display will show ON and two status icons at the top indicating that the pot is heating up and the pressure is building. This will take about 5 minutes.;

Step 4. Once pressure is built up, the cooking timer of 4 minutes will display. The float valve on the lid will also rise up as the pressure is built up. Once the cooking timer is done, the Keep Warm cycle will begin with a new 00:00 timer. During this stage, the Instant Pot will start to depressurize and cool down. Leave it undisturbed for 3-4 minutes to release some of the pressure naturally.;

Finding The Right Rice To Water Ratio

Most packaged rice will call for a 2:1 ratio of water to rice. For example, 2 cups of water and 1 cup of rice. In the Instant Pot, because nearly no liquid is lost through steam releasing, you can actually use a 1:1 ratio for most rice varieties.

So, 1 cup of rice and 1 cup of water thats it! Some find they want their rice a little fluffier, and if this is your preference, then you should use 1 1/4 cups water for 1 cup rice.

NOTE: You can double or triple the recipe and still get great results, but you shouldnt try cooking less than one cup of rice in the Instant Pot.

How To Avoid Mushy Rice

Mushy rice happens when the ratio of water to rice is not perfect. Many in the Instant Pot / Pressure Cooking community like a 1:1 ratio of rice to water. But I prefer a 1: 1 1/4 ratio. 1 Cup Rice to 1 1/4 Cup Water or liquid. This has always given me the best success.

Cooking Time is also important. Over cooking or under cooking can leave you with rice you prefer not to eat. And different varieties of rice require different cooking times.

Always fluff your rice! Fluffing rice is simple. Use a fork to gently lift the rice and separate right after cooking. It also helps to turn the Instant Pot off after the cook and natural pressure release has ended. The Keep Warm setting keeps heat on the bottom of the rice which will make the rice stick to the pot.

With such a fast and easy way to make rice, youll probably see it in your diets a lot more too! But thats okay, I have a ton of recipes using cooked white rice you can check out and try!

Cooked White Rice is great for serving with stir fry or teriyaki chicken.

It also makes a great dish next to some beef stroganoff! Even the leftover rice is great because it can be used in a fried rice recipe the next day!

So dont worry if you make too much, there are always a few great uses available.

    Does Wild Rice Need To Be Soaked

    Rather than relying on mixed messages, I went with a different approach: I asked my friend Kaare, from Finnskogen Farm. Kaare and his wife Pam have been studying and harvesting wild rice for years and years.

    And, not only does Kaare know his wild rice, he also knows nourishing food and Ojibwe culture. He says phytic acid is not an issue in wild rice, and to his knowledge, Native people did not utilize any sort of soaking methods to improve digestibility or reduce phytates.

    I can also say, from years of eating it, that consuming unsoaked wild rice has never caused any sort of digestive discomfort or reaction for me or any of my family.

    Remember: wild rice is an aquatic grass not a grain like wheat or oats or rye. For this reason, I assume its just fine to eat without soaking first. If anyone has evidence or knowledge to the contrary, please share it with us in the comments!

    • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add the grains, liquid and seasoning if you wish. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Multigrain button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High pressure for 40 minutes. If you press the Multigrain button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.

    If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.;
