One secret to cooking perfect meal in the instant pot without the BURN scare is to make sure you deglaze the pan thoroughly. Sometimes, you might even need to wash the pan before you continue cooking or let the pan cool a bit.

Not all BURN notice need a panic response, sometimes, we just need to chill and see how it pans out.

If you are cooking rice in your instant pot and you get a burn notice halfway through the cooking process, just turn it off and let it come to release its pressure naturally. You can be assured that the rice would come out fluffy and well done.

Note: only do this with rice recipes that you are not cooking with other protein like chicken or beef tips.

Top Tips For Making Instant Pot Chicken And Rice

  • Parmesan cheese is optional for this recipe, but we definitely recommend it! Fresh Parm will make this taste more like risotto, but if you are out, you can use a shredded cheese, like cheddar.
  • We used plain white rice for this recipe. Brown rice is not recommended since it would take about 10 minutes longer, which would overcook the chicken.
  • You must follow the directions exactly for releasing the pressure. Leaving it too long will result in overcooked rice and a potentially gluey texture. Make sure you manually release pressure after 2 minutes of natural pressure release!
  • This recipe does not make a soupy or stewy chicken and rice, but a thick and creamy risotto-like recipe. If youre looking for something that isnt thick and creamy, this isnt the recipe for you!

Tips For Using An Instant Pot:

First-time users: always read the users manual for your specific instant pot prior to starting since your machine may not operate or look exactly like ours.

  • Make sure the rim and rubber seal on your instant pot are clean for the seal to form properly.
  • Stir the rice together before turning on to avoid the burn notice.
  • Remember to set your lever to the stealing position for pressure to build.
  • When manually releasing pressure, wear an oven mitt and keep your face away from the hot steam vent.
  • I keep a paper towel ready to shield the vent in case it sputters liquid while venting/releasing pressure.
  • Always check the pressure indicator on your machine to ensure that the pressure has fully released prior to opening the lid.
  • Follow timing instructions precisely and set timers. With pressure cooking it easy to over-cook something if you forget about your pot.

What Is Quick Release

Quick Release means to let the Instant Pot release pressure naturally slowly for a few minutes . After the time has elapsed, switch the valve to venting to quickly release any remaining pressure. The pressure will release to a point where the pin drops, and you can open the lid.

Cooking rice in the Instant Pot is easy. Rice to water ratio and the right timing is the key to perfect rice.

I cook rice in a pressure cooker or using the “cook and drain” method. When cooking rice in an open pot and drain the extra liquid you don’t need to worry about the rice to water ratio.

Because once the rice is cooked, you drain excess water. On the other hand, cooking rice in a pressure cooker needs an exact rice-water ratio.

How To Avoid The Burn Warning

  • Dont skimp on the fat for sautéing the onion and garlic.
  • After sautéing the onion and garlic ensure no burnt bits and pieces are stuck to the bottom of the pot. If necessary add a splash of water and deglaze the bottom with a wooden spoon to really scrape everything off.
  • Have ingredients already measured out and ready to go so no time is wasted. This is especially important for the diced vegetables. Have them chopped and all in one bowl ready to add.
  • Once you add the rice you have to work quickly. Dont let the dry or rinsed rice sit on the hot plate without liquid for longer than 5 seconds. Add the cilantro water immediately after adding the rice and stir.
  • Do not mix in the vegetables and chicken. Let them sit on top of the rice.
  • Put on the lid quickly. From the moment you add the rice to the moment you close the lid should not be longer than maybe 30 seconds. The longer it takes you to put on the lid, the more liquid evaporates, and the higher the chances youll get the burn warning.

This aromatic Instant Pot Chicken Biryani is a simplified one-pot recipe for a classic Indian chicken and rice dish. In this easy recipe, marinated chicken is steam-cooked with nutty basmati rice and is flavored with fresh herbs, caramelized onions, fragrant spices and saffron. Enjoy this restaurant-favorite even on weeknights, in less than an hour.

Chicken biryani is my kid’s favorite Indian rice dish, and for a good reason! It’s a comforting and delicious one-pot meal with fall-apart tender chicken, fluffy long grain basmati rice and sweet caramelized onions . My family loves it with a side of cucumber raita and a simple salad!

  • I use boneless, skinless chicken breasts for a lean, healthy meal, but boneless, skinless chicken thighs would work great, too! You dont need to add any extra cook time.
  • If you want to make this a vegetarian meal, simply omit the chicken and bump up the veg.
  • If you want to make this a gluten-free meal, simply read all of your ingredients carefully to be sure there are no issues, as all of the ingredients themselves are gluten-free.
  • I dont recommend using any other rice for this recipe, as they all require different amounts of liquid and cook time. This recipe was originally written using brown rice, but I have since updated it to use long grain white rice as it cooks in the same amount of time as the chicken and is more foolproof!

Assemble & Pressure Cook

  • Step 5- Layer Biryani: To layer biryani in the Instant pot, layer and spread the strained rice over the partially cooked chicken. Add water over rice . Make sure all the rice is submerged. Sprinkle salt and garam masala and gently stir the top only.
  • Step 6- Top with aromatics: Top with half the fried onions and herbs, along with soaked saffron.
  • Step 7- Pressure cook: Close the lid with knob at sealing position. Set Pressure Cook or Manual for 6 minutes at high pressure. After cooking time is up, wait 5 minutes then manually release the pressure following the quick release instructions of your cooker.
  • Step 8 – Garnish & Rest Biryani: Open the lid and using oven mitts remove the inner pot from the Instant Pot base, to stop the cooking process. Using a fork, gently fluff the top 1-inch layer of rice. Top with remaining fried onions and chopped herbs. Let it rest for 5 minutes, uncovered. This allows for any excess moisture to evaporate. When ready to serve, carefully fluff up the biryani with a fork, without breaking the rice.

If there’s one thing we find magical about Instant Pots, it’s how quickly and perfectly they cook chicken and rice. The rice is the perfect texture and the chicken is insanely tender. This is the meal we cook in the Instant Pot the most often.

IMPORTANT! This recipe works best in a 6-quart instant pot. If using newer versions of Instant Pot, especially 8-quart capacity models, we recommend removing the inner pot after sautéing and letting it cool off for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on to the pressure cooking stage. This will help prevent a potential burn warning.

    Making Chicken and rice in Instant Pot is easy and convenient. No need for cleaning multiple pans or spending hours in the kitchen. Make it in the instant pot from start to finish in just 20 minutes.

    Start with seasoning Chicken. Seasoning Chicken well and browning helps in developing flavour. I have used chicken thighs but you can also use chicken breast instead.

    Next is to caramelize onion and a lot of garlic in butter, which again adds lots of flavours. You can use Olive oil instead of butter, but believe me, it will not be the same. So for once keep your worries about calories aside and use butter.

    I have used a mix of herbs Oregano, thyme and parsley. But you can use any of your favourite herbs.

    Using Chicken Stock instead of water makes the flavour robust. Use water or a mix of water and stock instead.
