Rice Sticking In Instant Pot
If your rice is sticking to the Instant Pot, check that youre not doing either of the following:
- Leaving the cooked rice in the rice cooker too long after it is done pressure cooking. Leaving it on keep warm mode for too long after cooking will dry out the rice quickly, and itll stick to the bottom of the pot.
- Not using enough water. If your water ratio is off, the rice will absorb the water too quickly and will burn and stick to the bottom of the pot.

A big ol rice cooker was a constant fixture in my parents kitchen from the day I was born. I dont think that hefty rice cooker has ever taken a day offit still sits in Moms kitchen. Though Dads favorite was aromatic jasmine rice, we usually had a pot full of pearly short grain because thats what Mom liked. Much to her chagrin, I totally was not a rice fan at all until I entered my adulting years.

Pressure Cooking Rice With Other Foods
The benefit of cooking any variety of rice using the pot-in-pot method is that you can cook another dish on the bottom of the pot at the same time. For example, my Instant Pot Chipotle Burrito Bowls have dry black beans cook from scratch on the bottom of the pot, while a bowl of brown rice cooks on top of that in a separate bowl.
You can do the same thing with chicken and white rice, with the chicken cooking on the bottom of the Instant Pot while a bowl of white rice cooks on top. The thing to keep in mind when cooking two dishes at once is that both dishes need to cook in roughly the same amount of time. Ive listed plenty of pot-in-pot cooking times for you to refer to!
You can even cook chicken and cauliflower rice together, like in my Instant Pot Chicken Burrito Bowls.
Brown Rice Made In Instant Pot
Perfectly cooked brown rice made in the Instant Pot
In the Instant Pot, rice : water ratio is 1:1 for making al dente rice. If you want the rice to be cooked softer- you should add 1/2 cup more water.
However, cooking time varies depending on the type of rice you are using. IP rice button is timed for cooking white rice and Parboiled rice. For other kinds, we have to use pressure cooking. For instance, Brown rice should be cooked at high pressure for 22 minutes. Wild rice needs more time, around 30 minutes.
I cooked brown rice in the IP and in 22 minutes with quick pressure release, perfectly cooked brown rice was ready, not mushy at all.
For all kinds of Rice, Rice : Water ratio is 1 : 1 for making Al dente rice .
For softer rice, add 1/2 cup more water.

Whats The Rice To Water Ratio
The water to rice ratio is different between brown and white rice. White rice is almost a 1:1 ratio in an Instant Pot, whereas brown rice is more of a 1 to 1.5 ratio in the IP.
Rather than using plain ol water, I go with chicken broth. It just adds flavor and interest, and we like a bit of interesting on our plate. Plus, chicken broth allows me to eliminate the pinches of salt and butter that often go into a pot of rice.
Feel free to use veggie broth, beef broth, homemade broth, or just go the water + pinches of salt route.
Bottom line: 1 part rice, 1.5 part liquid.

While this method doesnt call for rinsing the rice, the recipe notes include instructions for reducing the water slightly to account for additional moisture if you prefer to rinse. Using a one-to-one water-to-rice ratio, the recipe calls for cooking the rice for 15 minutes under high pressure and using natural release for just 5 minutes to finish cooking.
Results: This method produced the most ideal brown rice: soft and slightly chewy, with separate grains that didnt become sticky or overcooked in reheating. Plus, we loved that there was no rinsing required.

Should I Add Salt To Rice

Bonus: Seriously Helpful Instant Pot Tips
- Be sure your IP is in a location where its safe for natural release to vent upwards. I only say this because Ive had it sitting under the tall cabinets in the kitchen before, and the cabinets took a major steam bath. Warped cabinet paint is not ideal.
- If you cant avoid cabinets due to space, at least position your Instant Pot so the steam spout points away from cabinets. Better yet, use a steam diverter.
- Definitely be sure to cook only the amount of rice that will work for the size of your Instant Pot. Otherwise, youll experience a steamy mess on the lid afterwards.
- No matter what, we do have to wash those sealing rings, which can be tricky. Its a smart idea to have2 sealing rings to switch out try blue for sweets and red for savory.

Can I Use The Rice Function On The Instant Pot
Yes you can use the rice function on your Instant Pot to cook the rice. My rice function automatically switches the pressure level to LOW. If this is the case for you as well, make sure to press the button again until the pressure level shows HIGH.
If you want to cook brown rice without using the Rice function, you can do so. Simply set the pressure to HIGH manually and set a timer for 20 minutes.
Why Is Brown Rice Less Sticky
The tough outer bran keeps the sticky amylose starches trapped in the grain for longer than ordinary milled white rice. Since it takes water a longer time to penetrate into the center endosperm, this means there are less clingy starch molecules floating in the cooking water which prevents the rice from sticking together.

What Is The Best Water To Rice Ratio
The ratio of water:rice is 1:1> 1 cup water: 1 cup brown rice
The water:rice ratio is the same for any type of rice! The same goes for brown rice. Be A simple 1:1 ratio will leave you with perfectly cooked rice.
Be sure to use the exact same container to measure the rice and the water. This will ensure that you will end up with same exact amount of each.
Meal Prepping And Freezing Brown Rice
Since you can cook so much rice at a time, freezing brown rice is a great way to help you stay prepared for any meal. After cooking, let the rice cool and put individual servings in a separate freezer bags.
Spread the rice out in a thin flat layer for easy storage and quick reheating. I recommend writing the serving size and cook date on the bags with a sharpie for easy identification. Refrigerate cooked rice for up to 6 days or freeze for up to 2 months.

There is a big debate over which rice it better. All rice consists almost entirely of carbs, with small amounts of protein and practically no fat. Brown rice is a whole grain, which means it contains all parts of the grain including the fibrous bran, the nutritious germ and the carb-rich endosperm. Brown rice has more fiber and antioxidants, as well as a lot more important vitamins and minerals.
White rice has had the bran and germ removed, which are the most nutritious parts of the grain. This leaves white rice with very few essential nutrients, which is why brown rice is usually considered much healthier than white.
On the other hand, brown rice contains the anti-nutrient phytic acid which reduce our body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients such as iron and zinc. Brown rice may also contain higher amounts of arsenic, a toxic chemical. However this is only a concern if you eat a lot of rice.

Brown rice is like a humble best friend. A strong silent partner who doesnt say much but is always there to support whatever the main dish is on the plate but its also so much more than that! The versatility of brown rice knows no bounds because its also used in main dishes like Tex Mex rice and beans or Instant Pot rice and beans for a complete meal in one. Or a dessert like this brown rice pudding and all kinds of yummy baked treats. It can be left plain or seasoned to your preference, and it is a mild flavour that easily picks up the flavours of whatever else is being served.
As amazing as brown rice really is, there are still many variables to think about when you cook rice on the stovetop. Is my rice to water ratio just right? Will I burn the rice? Is my rice going to be perfectly cooked or undercooked? Rice isnt overly complicated but there are a number of things to think about in order to get it just right. Learning how to cook brown rice in Instant Pot takes away ALL of that wondering and gets you perfect brown rice without even having to watch it at all!
Pressure cooker brown rice still takes the same 45 minutes as it normally would but the freedom you have to not worry your pot is going to overboil or your rice will be undercooked, or burnt, is absolutely worth it. So, even though the overall time is the same, you end up still saving time because you can get other things done while you wait!
Natural Pressure Release Vs Quick Pressure Release
Whats better? Hands down, no doubt > > natural pressure release. If you cook rice longer so you can do quick pressure release, with the hope to have the rice cooked faster overall, it gets sticky and mushy.
If you want fluffy rice, I encourage you to be patient and wait for natural pressure release. I timed all rice and there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the timing. Even the same kind of rice in the same amount has had different natural pressure release times.

What Kind Of Release Method Is Best
Youll do a natural release here. At least 10 minutes natural release time is recommended, but I usually get lost in my work or social media or whatevs while the pressure cooker is doing its own thing and I dont bother timing the natural release.
Once the pressure cooker is finished cooking, I press cancel and let it natural release fully until its lost all steam. If Im not ready to serve, I let it go to Warm setting until Im ready.
Then, open the lid, fluff your rice, and serve it up.
Water To Brown Rice Ratios To Use
Here is a breakdown of the measurements I used for each variety:
- 1 dry measuring cup short-grain brown rice : 8 fluid ounces water
- 2 dry measuring cup short-grain brown rice : 16 fluid ounces water
- 1 dry measuring cup long-grain brown rice : 8 fluid ounces water
- 2 dry measuring cup long-grain brown rice : 16 fluid ounces water
Please note that I only tested 1 and 2 cup recipes for both of these varieties. If you want to make more brown rice at a time, I would suggest starting with the same 1:1 ratio and adding or removing water in the future depending on the final texture of the rice.
