How To Make Basmati Rice In The Instant Pot

The most important information you need to learn here is the rice and water ratio which is really simple to remember “1:1 ratio”. For every cup of rice, you need a cup of water. That is all there is to it! So for 2 cups of basmati rice, you’ll need 2 cups of water! Finally, perfect Instant Pot rice with minimal cooking time.

For 1 cup, 2 cups, or 3 cups, the cooking time remains the same.

Before your cook basmati rice, always rinse it twice before cooking it, discard the water. This step removes the starch on the grains.

Also, you’ll need to add salt to your water and I like using garlic salt. It adds a little flavor to your rice and can still be paired with any type of food like an Indian curry, a Chinese dish, or a French dish.

Now, in the inner pot, pour the rinsed rice, salt, and water, seal the lid of the pressure cooker. Press “pressure cook” and set it on high pressure. Program for a cook time of 8 minutes and do not press anything else. The Instant Pot will beep to acknowledge the time selected and will start to build pressure. The 8 minutes will start then.

CHEF TIP: Use broth instead of water to cook your rice.

To Rinse Or Not To Rinse

Instant Pot Basmati Rice

Yes, you should definitely rinse your basmati rice before cooking. Why? Because doing so removes surface starches that – left in place – can really gum up the works, so to speak, resulting in gummy, clumpy rice. Yes, its an extra step but a necessary one to achieve perfectly cooked rice. So bust out that fine mesh strainer beforehand and get your rinse on.

You dont necessarily need to rinse your rice until the water runs clear. I find that rinsing for 30-45 seconds is all it takes, followed by a few vigorous shakes to remove excess water.

You may also come across some sources that instruct you to soak Basmati rice for 30 minutes before cooking. Aint nobody got time for that. Totally unnecessary, in my opinion. Simply rinse your rice for fantastic results – achieved quickly.

Do You Need To Soak Or Rinse Basmati Rice

Traditionally, basmati rice is rinsed and/or soaked, as a way to remove excess starch and prevent the rice from being too sticky.

However, I have never soaked my basmati rice. Sometimes I rinse it and sometimes I dont. I dont find it to make a big difference either way, and I am always pleased with the texture, never finding it to be too sticky.

So no, you dont have to do either of those steps.

However, if you prefer to rinse your rice first, feel free to rinse it in a fine mesh sieve. Then, decrease the amount of water per cup by 3 Tablespoons, since the rice will still have some water on it even after it is drained.

Do I Have To Soak My Basmati Rice

No but do it if you have time.

Soaking basmati rice helps elongate the grains, so if you skip soaking, the rice grains will be slightly shorter.

The good news is that you can soak the rice for much longer than the twenty minutes the recipe calls for.

If you remember to put the rice in water an hour or two before you want to cook your rice, go for it.

That saidI often skip soaking basmati rice.

The rice is still delicious.

Key Steps For Rice In The Instant Pot

How to Cook White Basmati Rice in an Instant Pot or Multi Cooker
  • Rinse the rice before cooking. Rinsing rice before cooking removes any dirt from processing, gets rid of starch that can make the rice sticky, and, Ive found, makes the rice taste better. According to Instant Pots manual, rinsing the rice also makes up for the small amount of moisture lost in evaporation during the cooking process.
  • Use the right ratio of rice to water. Instant Pot suggests any rice can be cooked with a one-to-one rice-to-water ratio, but during testing, we found this wasnt universally true both among Instant Pot models and other multi-cookers. Use slightly more water when cooking brown rice and wild rice to prevent undercooking and scorching. Plus, its better to err on the side of more water, since most rice varieties can be drained if theres excess moisture.
  • Pressure cook the rice on high. Lock the lid in place and set to cook at HIGH pressure for the following times:
  • White rice : 5 minutes
  • Long-grain brown rice: 10 minutes
  • Wild rice: 15 minutes
  • Let the rice natural release for at least 10 minutes. Using natural release for rice yields fluffy results and less likelihood that the rice on the bottom of the pot will stick or burn.

What Type Of Basmati Rice To Use

There are many different varieties of basmati rice as well as different brands out there and while I have tested several different brands using this method, the fact is that theres no way to test them all. You may have to adjust the cooking time according to the brand you use. Please leave a comment letting me know what brand of rice you used and how this dish turned out for you!

I have tried and tested several brands and this recipe always works for me. I prefer to make rice using two brands: organic basmati rice from Trader Joes or my familys all-time favorite rice: Aahu Barah Basmati Rice which I buy either on amazon or at an Indian grocery store if I can find the brand locally. They are not a blog sponsor Im just a huge fan of their rice. It is honestly the best basmati rice Ive had and its kind of weird to say that out loud because who has a favorite brand of basmati rice? But once you try it, youll understand why. Its just different from other varieties of basmati rice.

    Release Pressure& Fluff Rice

How to cook basmati rice in an Instant Pot

Once cooking time is up, let the pressure release naturally for 5-10 mins. Release the remaining pressure by following the quick release instructions of your model. Open the lid after the pressure pin drops.

Fluff Rice: Using a fork, gently fluff the rice. No stirring. Then, let the rice rest for 5 mins, uncovered. This evaporates any excess moisture and the end result is fluffier.

Note: After opening the lid, if there is excess moisture, remove the steel insert from the base and let it sit uncovered for 5 minutes for the moisture to evaporate. Fluff the rice after this stage, so the rice don’t break.

What To Do If Rice Sticks To The Bottom And Sides Of The Instant Pot

This generally does not happen to me. It usually happens if I let the cooked rice sit in the Instant Pot and let it dry up in the leftover starch coating the pot. So, removing the rice to a bowl or storage container is necessary once it becomes warm and before it cools down completely.

If you still have a problem with the rice sticking to the pot, try spraying the sides and bottom of the pot with cooking spray before you add the rice and water.
