How To Make Crispy Chicken Wings In Instant Pot Air Crisp Duo
  • Use fresh or defrosted chicken wings and not frozen ones. The reason is, we need to mix meat with the spices, so they are evenly coated. If your meat if frozen, I would advise to defrost it before cooking.
  • Make sure you use a trivet or a steamer basket. You dont want the meat to sit in the liquid. Otherwise, it will be soggy and watery.
  • Can I Make Instant Pot Chicken Wings With Frozen Chicken

Fresh or frozen wings can be used to make Instant Pot hot wings.

For fresh meat: set the Instant Pot for eight minutes.

To cook frozen chicken wings: set the Instant Pot for twelve minutes.

Keep in mind that it will also take slightly longer for your Instant Pot to come to pressure when using frozen meat. Frozen meat will lower the temperature in the pot and as a result, the liquid will take longer to boil. Allow a little more time for meal prep if you dont thaw the chicken ahead of time.

    Can I Skip Broiling

You sure can, but I strongly recommend that you do this extra step for great-tasting and crispy chicken wings. But in case if you dont want to broil them or dont have an oven/broiler, then cook on high pressure for 5 minutes and leave the steam to naturally release for 10-15 minutes. Remember doing this wont result in crispy chicken wings.

    Trim Skin From Chicken Wings

A task I highly recommend for every chicken wing recipe I make is to trim any loose skin off the chicken. This makes a healthier meal and tasting the sauce on the meat is even better. Dont completely remove the skin as a little of it is necessary to hold the tender wings together after cooking. They get super tender and nearly fall off the bone so some skin is helpful. This extra step takes only a couple minutes- using your kitchen shears, cut off any excess as desired.

Other than tossing some great seasoning on the wings and trimming the chicken, into the Instant Pot or pressure cooker they go with a little bit of water. The wings should be on a trivet or steamer tray so the wings dont sit in the water. See Note in printable recipe regarding how much water to add.

For me, the Instant Pot took about ten minutes to reach pressure before it started counting down the five minute cooking time. After the cook time is up on the pressure cooker, let the pressure release naturally for five minutes. This means not to switch the release valve over to Venting until five minutes after the cooking timer goes off. As you can see by the photo above, the wings arent quite done after this short pressure time. This is where your oven-finish time comes in.

How To Make Chicken Wings From Frozen In An Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

Frozen will need a little extra time, but you can find some really amazing, meaty, already broken down wings in the freezer aisle. Simply cook frozen wings time and a half, which means for this recipe you’ll cook them for 8 minutes, with a full natural pressure release.

FYI: A natural pressure release is when you simply allow the pressure to come down on its own, without flipping the pressure release knob. When the pressure is gone, you will hear a quiet click, and the lid will twist off with ease. For wings, this process will take less than 10 minutes.

Tip: When cooking from frozen, I like to check the temperature of the meat. The best way to know if the chicken is undercooked is to use a meat thermometer. The proper temperature for chicken is 165°F.

    Air Fryer Crispy Buffalo Wings

Instead of broiling to achieve crispy skins, you could also use your air fryer.

1 Once the wings are finished cooking through in the Instant Pot, coat them in baking powder and a light coating of cooking spray.

2 Place wings in air fryer basket without overcrowding the basket . Cook at 380 degrees until the skins crisp . Toss wings in sauce and then return to air fryer for an additional 2 to 3 minutes or until wings are crisped to your liking.

    3. Place the lid on the Instant Pot, use the manual setting, and cook the wings. Please note that you need to cook frozen wings for longer than fresh wings. Please see the recipe on the bottom of this post for all the times.

    4. Once the wings are cooked in the Instant Pot, and cooled, you can proceed with air frying. But first, if you used frozen wings, make sure to cut the wings into two parts now. Make sure that wings are dry. Coat them with cooking oil and sprinkle with Rotisserie Chicken Rub.

    What Is An Instant Pot

An Instant Pot is a small, multifunctional kitchen appliance that acts as a pressure cooker, a slow cooker, a steamer, a frying pan, and even a rice cooker.

As a pressure cooker, the Instant Pot uses steam pressure to quickly cook your food. Unlike a slow cooker, you won’t need to wait all day to eat your meal. Some recipes can be done in as little as 10 minutes. And there is very little clean up involved when using an Instant Pot.

Chef Dan loves the Instant Pot for its convenience and speed. “If you don’t have the time, then you’ll need to use less traditional cooking methods,” Chef Dan says. “I think it’s a great convenience and I think it’s a viable alternative for home cooking to a fryer.”

Why Does An Instant Pot Work So Well For Chicken Wings

Chicken wings have a decent amount of fat on the skin, which makes the chicken wings really flabby and soggy if you bake them. You can get them more crisp, but it takes a lot more time in the oven.

Frying the chicken wings takes care of that and makes the wings super crisp and crunchy. Using an Instant Pot cooks the chicken wings in record time after it comes to pressure, only 5 minutes and they are cooked through. The chicken wings are also essentially steaming while they are pressure cooking, since they are not submerged in the cooking liquid and this method helps to render off a lot of that excess fat which drips down through the steaming basket and into the liquid below.

Lastly, putting the chicken in a hot oven to crisp up for another 15 minutes will give you a nice golden and crunchy exterior too.

    • A Pressure Cooker

    How To Bake Frozen Wings:

I use to think frozen breaded chicken wings were the only way to enjoy a crispy wing. Boy, was I wrong. The wire rack is the key to crispy chicken wings.

Place on the bottom of the Instant Pot before adding the chicken. The purpose of the rack is to elevate the chicken in the Instant Pot so that it does not touch the bottom of the pot. This prevents the wings from soaking in the sauce and getting soggy.

INSTANT POT TIP: Use the wire rack in your Instant Pot if you are steaming vegetables to prevent the veggies from soaking in the water and becoming soggy.

Arrange chicken wings onto the wire rack in the instant pot.

I will buy fresh chicken wings when they are on sale and separate the wings before placing in the freezer. This allows me to arrange the wings in the instant pot so they can look prettier when cooked.

However, the recipe will work perfectly fine if you buy your chicken wings pre-frozen or do not feel like separating the wings.

If you had remaining sauce in the bottom of the large bowl with the chicken, pour into the instant pot. Remember to keep the other 1/4 of the sauce to the side.

Cover the Instant Pot with the lid, set to sealing, and cook on high pressure.

    Instant Pot Duo Crisp Method

  • Prep first, place the wire trivet in your Instant Pot and pour in 1 cup of water.
  • Season + Steam toss the wings with salt and pepper, then place them on top of the steamer. Cook for 8 minutes on high pressure.
  • Release the Pressure + Remove once the timer goes off, immediately release the pressure in the Instant Pot . Remove the chicken wings and trivet from the pot, and pour out the water.
  • Air Fry place the air fryer basket in the pot and line with a parchment paper insert . Place the chicken wings in the basket and place the air fryer lid on the pot. Set to cook at 400°F for 15-20 minutes, flipping the wings about halfway through cooking , until crisp. Note: your chicken wings do *not* need to be in a single layer in order to crisp! The air fryer does a really great job of circulating the air around the wings and tossing at the halfway mark really helps too.
  • Make the Sauce if youre making a homemade sauce, do that while the wings cook!
  • Toss + Serve toss the finished wings in the sauce and serve.

    Are Air Fried Wings Healthy

It depends on what you consider healthy because eating healthier doesnt look the same for everyone. But air-fried wings are healthier than the deep-fried ones. You dont need to use oil to get them nice and crispy.

Some people try to avoid wings because of the oil when they are deep-fried but using the air fryer you wont need almost anything like you need when deep-frying wings.
