First Lets Address The Lid

How To Get Smells Out Of Your Instant Pot

The Instant Pots lid is dishwasher safe, and its key that you place it on the top rack, removing the silicone sealing ring and the anti-block shield, in order to give it the optimal washing. Its also important to double check the steam valve to ensure that there is no food stuck in any small crevices. After washing, make sure the lid is completely dry before you place it back on the pot for storage. That said, if placing your lid in the dishwasher makes you nervous, you can wash it by hand with soapy water and a soft dish cloth.

How To Deep Clean An Instant Pot

1. Unplug the Instant Pot and remove the lid.

2. Clean the cooker base and rim. Use a damp kitchen towel or paper towel to wipe down any food residual or stains on the pots exterior. Never immerse the cooker base in water or place it in the dishwasher. This will damage the heating element inside the pot. If there is food on the inside of the pot, wipe it away with a slightly damp cloth.

3. Clean the inner pot. Pop the inner pot into the dishwasher with the rest of the dishes. If the inner pot has any cooked-on residue, use a non-abrasive cloth or scrubber with baking soda and vinegar to get those tough stains off. If the pot shows some discoloration, spray white vinegar onto the stain and let it sit for five minutes. Then, rinse and dry so the pot will not have any water stains.

4. Wash the lid. You can give the lid a quick rinse under warm water after every use or pop it in the dishwasher. If you chose to place it in the dishwasher, remove the steam release valve, anti-block shield, silicone ring and float valve before placing it on the top rack. Be sure to reinstall all parts of the Instant Pot after the cleaning or the pot wont function properly. Hand washing the lid with a non-abrasive cloth or scrubber and warm, soapy water is another option. Lastly, make sure the lid is completely dry before placing the lid back onto the pot and locking it in place.

How To Get Rid Of That Nasty Smell In Your Instant Pot

You cooked a perfect quinoa dish in your Instant Pot, but now youre left with a nasty case of Instant Pot Lid Funk. Today well tell you why, and well also share experts suggestions for exiling the stink from your kitchen for good.

The culprit is your Instant Pots sealing ring, the food-grade silicone band that goes around the top of the Instant Pot lid, guaranteeing a tight seal for all that pressure cooking youre doing. See here:

While the smell can be scary, theres no need to fear. Silicone is entirely safe for food, which is why its such a popular material used for kitchen tools and food storage.

There are three reasons the sealing ring gets stanky. First, its porous. That means when you cook aromatic dishes like chili, curries or stews microscopic particles get in the pores, leaving a memory of dishes past.

Beyond this, though, a deeper funk can develop. In the event the ring is loose, or stored in the Instant Pot while its damp, organic matter trapped between the ring and the lid will fuel the growth of microorganisms. When these start multiplying, the smell gets much, much worse. Imagine a teenage boys bedroom. Yeah, it can get ripe.

Finally, as you cook and vent with your pot, steam and food residue get stuck, building up and fermenting all kinds of matter. Lucky for you, no matter how bad yours smells right now, cleaning it is likely a one- or two-step process that will have it smelling like new in a few hours.

What Causes Instant Pot Odor

If you use your Instant Pot often, you probably experienced this scenario.

You take your cooker out of storage, remove the lid to load it up with goodies, andwhoa! The smell of the last thing you cooked knocks you backward.

You feel confident you cleaned the liner and unit carefully before storing it. So what happened?

In fact, you did nothing wrong.

The culprit responsible for retaining that funky fragrance is the seal thats just inside the lid.

The manufacturers call this piece the sealing gasket. Fabricated from silicone, it has a rubber texture. The sticky nature of the material means that it retains odors, even though you cleaned your pot well.

Although you might remove it and clean it diligently after each use, the smells linger. Its a buildup of cooking odors and even unhealthy bacteria that accumulates underneath the seal.

You dont need to replace it until it no longer seals firmly. Instead, deodorize and freshen your Instant Pot and get rid of that foul odor. When you finish, your entire house will smell great, too!

How To Prevent Weed Smell In The Future

How to deep clean your Instant Pot (and get the smell out of your sealing ring)

If youre looking to avoid having your home smell like cannabis in the first place, concentrates are a safe bet, odor-wise. However, if youre loving the flower for its terpenes and cannabinoids and want to keep your smoking au natural, a dry herb vape is a great compromise.

Dry herb vapes are relatively inexpensive on the low end, with handheld devices retailing for less than $150 on the lower end. Because dry herb vapes vaporize the terpenes and cannabinoids rather than burning up the flower, theres no smoke and far less smell.

Handheld vaporizers are discreet and give off minimal smell.

Using a vaporizer keeps your place smelling fresh. As an added bonus, when youre done smoking you can use the leftover ABV for edibles or tinctures.

In order to keep the weed smell from settling in in the first place, be sure to blow your smoke out the window and take your trash out regularly. Empty your bong water after youre done using it, for odor and for health reasons, or smoke in the bathroom with the shower and the fan on. Finally, keep your weed in airtight containers to keep those terpenes contained. With a little precaution and a little extra effort your place will keep smelling fresh.

Put That Ring Through The Ringer

Smells lurking in the Instant Pot’s silicone ring are tough to eliminate. Trips through the dishwasher help, but you might still notice a lingering sweet or savory smell. If that’s the case, try this.

Add 2 cups of water or white vinegar to the Instant Pot plus a roughly chopped lemon rind. Next run the steam program for 2 minutes. Then, remove the ring and air-dry it. If that doesn’t work, try soaking the ring overnight in vinegar, which is a natural odor eliminator. Just remember to run the ring through the dishwasher or thoroughly hand-wash before using.

Some home cooks don’t bother with eliminating the odor and opt to buy an additional silicone ring. One ring is used for sweet dishes and the other for savory dishes. In any case, Instant Pot recommends that you swap in a new ring at minimum every 6 to 12 months.

How to Get the Smell out of Instant Pot

Were you one of the MANY people who received an Instant Pot over the holidays? If so, welcome to the cult. One of the first things I made in mine was pulled chicken tacos, riffed from a few blog recipes and the instructional manual. The Instant Pot is awesome for shreddy chicken in around 30 minutes. But the next time I pulled the pot out off my bookshelf-full-of-kitchen-stuff-and-not-books, a waft of cumin hit me in the nostrils. Oof. The Instant Pots rubber sealing ring takes on smell like a school-issued soccer jerseynot a breathable fabric.

Its dishwasher safe, and most of the time that gets the scent out. But I dont have a dishwasher, and maybe you dont either, which is why youre here. Some people buy two rings to keep the savory separate from the sweet you can get and stop reading this. Yet two rings felt extraneous to me, person with an entire shelf of spillover kitchen appliances, pots, and specialty gelatin molds, so Id rather just clean it. Heres how.

As a lot of cleaning in the kitchen goes, white vinegar is the answer. Soak the ring in white vinegar diluted with water, as long as you can stand it. I do this in my sink with a few glugs of vinegar and then water to cover, but you could do it in a sheet pan as pictured above or a plastic tub, whatever. After an hour or whenever you remember it was soaking, wash with dish soap and leave it out to dryin the sun is ideal.
