How To Cook Frozen Chicken Breasts In The Instant Pot Pressure Cooker:
The process couldnt be easier. Thats one of the reasons why this recipe is included on my list of the best Instant Pot recipes for beginners!
You simply place your frozen breasts in the Instant Pot, along with one cup of water. Lock the lid and place the vent in the sealed position.
Use the Manual/Pressure Cook setting and select a 10-minute cook time .
While the chicken is cooking, you can prep any other ingredients you need for your meal.
After the cook time is finished, allow a natural pressure release. Natural releases help the meat have better texture. When the valve has dropped, voila!
How To Cook A Frozen Chicken In The Instant Pot

This recipe is for an Instant Pot whole frozen chicken but fresh whole chickens are great in the Instant Pot as well. For a fresh whole chicken cook it the same as above but for 6-8 minutes per pound of chicken. I tend to go to the higher side because I want to be sure it is cooked and pressure cooking helps prevent it from getting dry. Just be sure to check the temperature and stick it back in if its not fully cooked.

Ingredients You Will Need
- Frozen chicken breasts: Up to 3 lbs boneless chicken breasts.
- Water: 1 cup cold water. You can use chicken broth, pineapple juice or apple cider but it will mostly flavor the broth not the meat.
You can sprinkle chicken breasts with garlic powder, dried oregano, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper etc. But seasonings will not stick to frozen meat well and will end up at the bottom of the pot, making a flavorful broth which then could be made into stock or use in soups.

Fresh Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
- 8 minutes, vent immediately to release any remaining pressure

Is The Food Thawed Or Frozen
When it comes to instant pot freezer meals, it is important to determine whether you want to thaw it or cook it frozen. Many individuals prefer thawing it out first especially when it comes to reheating small portions of sauce. What you can do is, decide what food you want to consume the following day so you can pull the frozen meal out of the freezer the night before. Make sure you are placing the frozen food in the refrigerator so it does not go bad.
This way, your frozen food will have plenty of time to defrost so when you wake up, all you will have to do is heat it up which is far easier than defrosting.
Another thing to know is that when you are using an instant pot to heat thawed food, it will take less time compared to frozen food.

What Is Natural Pressure Release
A Natural Pressure Release means that the pressure is released gradually. For a Natural Pressure Release, you click on Keep Warm, and wait 10-15 minutes , after which you open the valve and let any leftover pressure release. Another option is to Turn Off/Unplug the IP, wait 10-15 minutes , and after that open the valve.
A natural release is usually used when cooking soups, meat in a large amount of sauce, pasta, or steel-cut oats. This method prevents any foam from the dish to shoot out through the valve, which can happen during a Quick Pressure Release.
How To Thaw Beef Fast
Be sure the package is airtight or put it into a leakproof bag.Cold water thawing is a fast way to thaw meat while completely avoiding bringing your meat within the danger zone.Cold water thawing works best with smaller cuts of meat such as ground beef, steak, or chicken pieces.Defrost it for another 2 minutes until the pot roast thaws completely.

Can You Cook Frozen Chicken In A Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker Or Power Pressure Xl
Yes! Both the Ninja Foodi and Power Pressure XL are electric pressure cookers, so they work similarly to the Instant Pot.
For the Ninja Foodi, you can simply follow the Instant Pot instructions Ive outlined.
For the Power Pressure XL, since there is not a Manual/Pressure Cook button, youll have to use a preset button.
In this case, you can use the Soup/Stew button, which defaults to a 10 minute cook time , and if you want to adjust the time to 12 or 13 minutes for larger chicken breasts, use the Adjust button to add minutes to the cook time.
If the breasts are very large, you could also use the Meat/Chicken button, which defaults to a 15 minute cook time.
Thawing Do’s And Don’ts
- Dont thaw chicken at room temperature. Room temperature is exactly the temperature that bacteria love. If you are in a time crunch, do another quick method, like the water bath or microwave.
- Dont thaw chicken in warm or hot water. Once again, this makes a bacteria party. If you are that desperate, get takeout or open a can of tuna for last-minute tuna melts.
- Dont cook chicken on the stove or in the oven without thawing it. The USDA says its safe, but were not behind this. If youre not careful, you could wind up with chicken thats cooked on the outside and still frozen inside, which is both unsafe and unappetizing.
- Do be sure to follow good food handling practices. Be mindful not to spill or splash any raw chicken liquid around. Wash and sanitize cutting boards and surfaces immediately after youve had raw chicken on them.

How To Pressure Cook Frozen Chicken Breasts

Im sure many of you are like me and when dinner time rolls around, I find myself wondering what to cook for dinner. Thats why I almost always have a big bag of frozen Costco chicken breasts in the freezer.
Chicken cooked from frozen is excellent in recipes that call for cooked chicken, to add protein to your salads, or just to freeze in ready-to-use portions.
In my cookbook, The Electric Pressure Cooker Cookbook, I give lots of tips about pressure cooking meats from frozen. I prefer not to cook large cuts of meat, like roasts, from frozen. Frozen meat doesnt brown well, doesnt cook as evenly, and doesnt absorb marinades.
However, this doesnt mean you have to scrap cooking and order takeout if youve forgotten to thaw your chicken in advance! Chicken is easy to cook from frozen, and youll get great results. Here are my go-to methods for getting tender, moist chicken cooked from frozen chicken breasts.

How To Store Instant Pot Chicken
- Leftover cooked, shredded, or diced Instant Pot chicken can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Let thaw overnight.
- Shredded Instant Pot Chicken is IDEAL for meal prep. Make a big batch at the beginning of the week, divide into individual containers, then use it all week long.
How To Add Veggies To Ground Beef:
- Looking to add more veggies to your diet? Riced cauliflower blends in perfectly with ground beef, especially when its seasoned! Add in one bag of cooked cauliflower rice to each pound of ground beef. If youre feeding it to a picky crowd, start with 1/2 cup of cauliflower per pound of beef and slowly work your way up.
- If youre trying to hide cauliflower rice in your ground beef, add 1/2 cup of diced onionstheyll camouflage the veggie taste, and the rice wont be as easily identifiable because it kind of looks like diced onions.

How To Cook Frozen Chicken Breast In Instant Pot
I will talk about all parts of the bird but breasts are the most common. To be quite honest I dont buy a lot of frozen chicken breasts, but occasionally if I find a large pack on sale I will use a few and freeze the rest.

Thawing In The Fridge
Thawing chicken in the fridge is the best and safest way to defrost it, but it requires about a day of planning ahead, so if you need a faster solution, skip ahead. The day before you plan to cook your chicken, transfer it from the freezer to the fridge to let it thaw slowly, for at least 24 hours. Make sure to place the raw chicken in a rimmed container or bowl, ideally at the bottom of your fridge to minimize risk of drips onto your other food as it thaws. Defrosting your meat like this will ensure it stays fresh in your fridge for an additional 1 to 2 days, but once it’s thawed, it cannot be refrozen unless you’re planning to cook it in a liquid like a stock, soup or stew. Refreezing thawed meat breaks up the protein cell structure and creates unwanted extra moisture, resulting in poor flavor and texture.
