How Much Rice Can I Cook

One last rule of thumb to keep in mind is that youll need to cook at least 1 1/2 cups of rice in a 6-quart pressure cooker to get nice, even results. This is because the bottom of the pot isnt perfectly flat, but slightly concave. If you use less rice, the grains in the middle of the pot will not cook as evenly, since they wont be submerged in the water as much as the rice on the sides of the pot.

On the flip side, dont overfill your pressure cooker with too much rice, either! It should be half full or less when youre cooking any grains, beans, pastas, or other foods that can tend to foam up. I find that I get the best results when I cook between 1 1/2 and 3 cups of rice at a time.

  • TIP! By the way, you can always make extra rice and freeze the extra. Here’s how to do that.

Those are my best tips for cooking rice! Of course, you can also just follow the basic recipe below. Either way, enjoy!

A Few Notes About The Ingredients:

  • Basmati rice – basmati is a long grain, fragrant rice that lends it’s own flavor to the dish. It turns out tender and fluffy, while it absorbs great flavor from the onion, garlic, and spices.
  • Yellow onion, garlic – the onion and garlic offer a fresh aromatic flavor to the yellow rice.
  • Turmeric – turmeric is a bright yellow spice that can be found in the spice aisle of your grocery store. It dyes the rice a vibrant yellow color and offers a warm, earthy flavor to it. Turmeric is also thought to have healing qualities.
  • Cumin – cumin also adds a warm flavor to the rice. It is slightly zestier than turmeric but they pair perfectly together.
  • Salt, pepper, bay leaf – salt, pepper, and bay leaf add that additional notch of flavor, bringing it all together. When the bay leaf infuses into the rice, it adds a slight bitterness that actually helps in lightening up the dish.
  • Low sodium chicken broth – cooking the basmati rice in chicken broth adds another element of flavor as the rice soaks it in. You can opt to use water instead, however, it may produce less flavorful yellow rice.
  • How To Store Leftover Saffron Rice

If you have leftovers, simply place in an airtight container. Your rice will store for up to five days in the fridge when it is stored properly.

You can reheat in the microwave or opt to reheat on the stove. If you heat on the stove I suggest adding a little water or chicken stock to help keep it moist as it reheats.

If you dont add a little liquid it could dry out as you warm in a pan.

So if you are a fan of package saffron rice, try a new way to cook it! I think you will love the end result!

    Why Yellow Rice From Scratch

Wondering why you should try the from scratch method instead of using prepackaged bags of yellow rice? First, while making prepackaged rice that includes a seasoning packet is tempting because there’s no need to measure out spices, the amount of sodium in said packet needs a second look. Just 2 ounces of dry pre-packaged yellow rice typically has over 30% of your daily recommended sodium intake. One popular prepackaged brand had 750mg, compared to less than 200mg in this recipe. With homemade, you can control the sodium level and be assured that you’re cooking with real, not artificial, ingredients.

Second, with an Instant Pot, making your own yellow rice from scratch couldn’t be easier. Third, the flavor in this rice is amazing! Even my family, who like to stick to the same familiar dishes, loved the new flavors in this rice. We’ve yet to serve this rice to a crowd who didn’t devour it.

    How To Freeze Yellow Rice

Also, did you know that you can freeze leftover yellow rice and then steam it in the microwave later, just like those little bags of frozen rice you can buy at the grocery store?

So easy and far less expensive! All you have to do is put a couple of cups of cooled cooked rice into a zip-top freezer bag, press out excess air, and put it in the freezer.

When you are ready to warm the yellow rice, simply open the bag, add in a couple of tablespoons of water to the bag, and put it in the microwave for about 3-5 minutes. Easy peasy!

    • Add some smokiness: Add about 1 tsp. smoked paprika or ground cumin to give it a smoky flavor the smoked paprika will change the color a bit.
    • Mix it up: Use lime juice and lime zest instead of lemon and add cilantro
    • Use quinoa, buckwheat or even cauliflower rice in place of rice. You will need to change the cooking time and water based on what is required for that grain. Omit all but ¼ cup of water for cauliflower rice -and simply saute the cauliflower for 7-10 minutes after cooking the onions.

Yellow Rice In The Instant Pot

Is it me or does yellow rice taste better than white? Its a visual thing! Color affects how we perceive taste. When our tastebuds come into contact with food, they send signals to our brain to interpret flavor. But we look at food before eating so our eyes are sending signals first. This causes us to have an interpretation of what the food tastes like even before it crosses our lips.

What gives yellow rice that appetizing hue? Turmeric! Merely a handful of years ago, I didnt even know what turmeric was. These days, not only do I always have fresh root on hand but I buy ground turmeric. You read that right, my pantry houses a 1 lb. bag of ground turmeric. How did I go from not knowing what turmeric was to buying it by the pound? I read How Not to Die by Dr. Michael Greger and learned a vast amount of information about food and health. Turmeric was one of many things I began to incorporate into my diet after learning the health benefits!

You might wonder what I use all this turmeric in? Everything. Beans, rice, curries, tofu seasoning, chilis, even green smoothies, just to name a few.

What Type Of Chicken Do You Use For Chicken And Yellow Rice

Generally, I use a boneless skinless chicken. I love to shred the chicken once it has finished cooking and then you get bits of chicken and rice in every single bite. If you use bone-in, you just wont have that shredded aspect. I like to use bone-in if I make this on the skillet so I can brown the skin for a crispy texture.

Why Do You Want To Rinse Your Rice

    Instant Pot Yellow Rice

This yellow rice recipe calls for you to rinse the rice before you cook it. Is this really necessary? You can certainly cook your yellow rice without rinsing it, but it’s better if you do.

Rinsing your rice will remove any debris that are clinging to the rice, but more importantly than that, it will remove the surface starch. That surface starch is what causes the rice to be gummy and to cling together.

Can I use brown rice for this yellow rice recipe?

Yes you can, but you will need to change the cook time. Refer to your pressure cooker manual for cooking times.
