Are Pressure Cookers Safe
Yes, electric pressure cookers like the Instant Pot are generally safe and easy to use. The Instant Pot has so many safety mechanisms built in, its hard to make a catastrophic mistake. The lid has two safety catches: a valve that releases excess pressure automatically, and a lock preventing you from opening the pot while its under pressure. If for some reason the steam-release valve isnt doing its job, the appliance has another sensor that shuts off the heating element if excess pressure builds inside the pot.
But as with any kind of cooking, there is a risk of injury if you are careless. If you follow the safety instructions, you should be good. Weve found only one confirmed report of an injury caused by an Instant Pot, and it was the result of user error: The person suffered minor burns after she covered the steam valve with a dish towel while the pot was under pressure. When she touched the towel a few minutes later, hot soup sprayed onto her arm and neck. The Instant Pot manual, however, explicitly states that all venting valves should be clean and free of debris.

Is The Instant Pot Worth It
Besides the just-mentioned lead bit, people generally do consider their Instant Pots to be game-changers. Find some recipes utilizing those here.
It Keeps Your Kitchen Cool
Cooking a meal in the summertime can pump a lot of heat into your kitchen. Your air conditioner has to work harder to remove all that excess heat, which jacks up your electric bill. So, anything you can do to reduce the amount of heat in your kitchen can also help you save money on air conditioning.
A central air conditioning system consumes about 3,500 watts of power, so for every extra hour you use it, youre adding 3.5 kWh to your electric bill. If you cut your summer AC use by just 2 hours per week over the course of an entire summer, you could save around 50 kWh, for an extra $6.35 in electricity savings.

Choosing An Instant Pot For Your Cooking Needs
When you want a countertop appliance that does more than one thing, choosing an Instant Pot gives you a lot of extra options for how to prepare foods. People also call an Instant Pot an “Instapot” or an “Insta Pot”. The Instant Pot is kind to your budget because it combines several different cooking tools into one device.
These multicookers have integrated software that lets you perform various cooking functions with the touch of a button for a simplified cooking experience. The main functions these cookers perform are slow cooking, sauteing, and pressure cooking. However, there are buttons that break the functions down further to help cooks perform different types of cooking.
You Can Make Pasta In Your Instant Pot
I was always told this was a no-no when I got mine but we make it ALL the time. Different pasta cooks differently, so using spaghetti will be different than a more substantial pasta. We havent done spaghetti but penne pasta works great as does bowtie, macaroni & more. There is NO boiling water required, and no straining and rinsing.
To make pasta, just put in the inner pot and fill with water JUST above the pasta. Dont put too much extra water you just want the water to barely touch the top of the leveled pasta. Put the lid on, close the valve and set for 4 minutes on manual . Let it sit for 3-4 minutes after it beeps then release the pressure.

Cost Of Homemade Greek Yogurt
The only thing I have to purchase each time I make a batch of yogurt is the milk. Im not planning to include the cost of my Instant Pot. Electricity is negligible, since the fridge is already running and the Instant Pot uses very little energy. Its totally fine to use yogurt from the last batch as starter for the next, so I wont include that cost either.
I will include the strainer since some kind of cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer is required to make Greek yogurt. I use the Euro Cuisine Greek Yogurt Maker strainer. The mesh on the strainer is very fine, so Im not sure it will last more than a couple years. Lets say I make up to 2 batches of yogurt per month , so Ill estimate that I make 20 batches per year. If the strainer lasts two years, thats 40 batches of yogurt. Ill give it the benefit of the doubt and say it lasts for 50 batches of yogurt.
Though its not monetary, Im going to include the cost of my time and labor that goes into making the Greek yogurt at home. You pay for convenience and having all that work done for you when you buy pre-made items at the store, so I think its important to consider during a final cost evaluation when considering Store Bought vs. Homemade Greek Yogurt: Which is Cheaper?
Cost of Store Bought Milk : $3.29 total 2.6 cents per ounce of milk1 Gallon makes 72.6 ounces Greek yogurt$3.29 gallon of milk / 72.6 ounces Greek yogurt = 4.5 cents per ounce of yogurt
Average Natural Gas Prices In The United States
Between 1999 and 2008, the national annual average residential natural gas price more than doubled, from $6.69 per thousand cubic feet to $13.68 per Mcf. The national average price of natural gas is only part of the story, as the prices in individual States can differ greatly. These differences are often related to a market’s proximity to the producing areas, the number of pipelines in the State, average consumption per residence receiving service, and the transportation charges associated with them, as well as State regulations and degree of competition.
For example, based on 2008 data, residential consumers along the Atlantic Coast tend to pay the most, with prices ranging from $15 to more than $20 per Mcf. By contrast, States in the rest of the country benefit from either indigenous production or the presence of major trunk lines traversing the State. The availability of relatively abundant supplies results in prices between $10 and $15 per Mcf.

If I Already Have A Slow Cooker And A Rice Cooker Do I Really Need Another Appliance
Well, we cant dictate what you need. However, the Instant Pot is more functional than both a slow cooker and rice cooker combined because it can also pressure-cook. The word instant in the name gives it away: You can cook things astonishingly fast in a pressure cookereven notoriously slow-cooking or labor-intensive foods like risotto and brisket.
We think rice cooked in the Instant Pot is fine for most people, though the grains dont come out as fluffy and light as they do from a high-end rice cooker like our upgrade pick, the Cuckoo CRP-G1015F. Rice aficionados might want to keep their rice cooker, especially for cooking sushi-grade grains.
If youre worried about clutter, you can donate your old appliances to a charity, or hand them off to someone in your life whos just starting out. Were sure theyd appreciate them.
Make A Dish Inside Of Your Instant Pot
If you have read my blog for a while, you will have noticed that we made Cheesecake in our Instant Pot. And Sweet Potato Casserole. You can also make cake, and cornbread, in fact anything that is baked in a dish can be baked in the Instant Pot.
In each case, youll place the trivet in the IP, add 1/2 1 C. water, and then set the dish or Springform pan ON the trivet before locking the lid and closing the valve. The steam in the pot will cook the food in a fraction of the time when you remove the lid, you might see a little moisture ON the cheesecake or cake which is normal . Lift out the trivet with the dish and enjoy your meal after all, you never in a million years realized that this amazing appliance could make cheesecake SO effortless.

Can I Plug My Crock
Cars are rather complicated to use as batteries to power electronics. However, it can be done. You can run pretty much anything from your car battery these days, including your crock-pot.
Remember, that the power will come from the alternator when your cars engine is running.
The battery only becomes the source of power when the engine is switched off.
Therefore, if you want to use your crock-pot while you are not driving, then you should install an additional battery to make it worth your while.
Side note: think about including a cutoff switch to the main battery. It is extra work but massively increases your safety.
Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer
Air fryers are another popular Prime Day kitchen purchase. The Instant Pot Duo Crisp eliminates the need to buy both: It comes with a multi-level air fryer basket with a dehydrating and broiling tray and protective pad, which you can use to keep your countertop safe. The 8-quart Crisp also pressure cooks, sautes, steams, slow cooks, sousvides, warms, roasts, bakes, broils and dehydrates. It comes equipped with Instant Pot’s EasySeal lid, which automatically and safely seals for pressure cooking.
Normally $200, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp is on sale for $130 during Amazon Prime Day.
How Many Different Instant Pots Are There
Good question. If you’re counting all of Instant Pot’s devices including appliances outside pressure cookers, there are a lot. If you’re only counting pressure cookers, it’s still pretty confusing. Instant Pot added a slew of new cookers in 2019 and again in 2020.
Here’s how to compare each Instant Pot model:
- Functions: Pressure cooking, slow cooking, rice cooking, steaming, warming, sautéing
- Sizes: 3 quart, 6 quart, 8 quart
- New lid with safe steam valve features: No
Reducing Our Energy Usage
As stewards of creation, conserving energy is one way to treat our Earth with care. In the kitchen, the stove is a major energy drainer. Did you know that 26% of the energy used on food in America is used by the average person for home food preparation? When I read this statistic, I was quite shocked, considering the food industry and its processing plants, transportation costs, and grocery store utilities, not to mention restaurants and cafeterias. I didnt think that many people even cooked at home anymore!
It strikes me as important, then, that we home cooks conserve energy as much as we can when were working in the kitchen. I canned some food for the first time this week, and I was appalled at the amount of water it took to first fill the jars with hot water to prep them and then fill the canning pot until the water was an inch over the tops of the jars. Seriously. I only made 5 jars of applesauce, but I bet I used 10 gallons of water. I let it cool and poured it on my garden the next day, but Im still not happy about it!

What A Retailer’s Instant Pot Descriptions Won’t Tell You
The “manual” button on some entry-level models is the source of so much confusion on otherwise simple, straightforward panels. Most people only know this from watching tutorials or bugging the shit out of people on Instant Pot Reddit: The manual button is the pressure cooking button. Why it’s not labeled as such, we can’t be sure. Think of it as manually inputting how long you want something to pressure cook. Telling your pot to begin pressurizing is as simple as hitting manual, then the arrows. This is the setting to use if you want to defrost something fast, and most foods don’t take longer than a few minutes at this setting.
Even if your recipe only calls for one minute of cook time, you are not about to go from frozen chicken breasts to a perfect roast with a well-done center. The act of sealing and coming to pressure feels like it takes forever , and yes, it’s fine if your Instant Pot blows steam in the process. It will automatically switch to pressure cooking when pressurization is complete and will automatically switch to warming when the timer is up.

How Pressure Cookers Work
A pressure cooker works by cooking food with high-pressure steam. It has four basic parts:
When you heat water in the pot, it turns to steam, raising the pressure inside the pot. As the pressure builds up inside the pot, it makes it harder for water molecules in the remaining liquid to turn to gas, raising the boiling point of the water. Water normally boils at 212°F , but inside a pressure cooker, the boiling point can get as high as 250°F .
Pressure cookers speed cooking in two ways. First, the higher heat inside the pot cooks food faster than you can with ordinary boiling water or steam. Second, the high pressure forces the moisture into the food, so it heats through quickly.
A pressure cooker can cook nearly any food faster than baking or boiling. For foods that take an hour or longer to cook on the stove, such as dry beans or brown rice, the pressure cooker can cut cooking time by as much as 70%. Faster-cooking foods like white rice can be ready in a matter of minutes.

While the Instant Pot is its own brand, Cuisinart, Gourmia, and Breville all offer pressure cookers and slow-cookers that can do similar things as an Instant Pot, so do your research to see which will best suit your needs before purchasing. For example, the Instant Pot has a slow-cooker function, while the Cuisinart does not. The Gourmia has a non-stick, aluminum pot for easy clean-up, and the Instant Pot has a stainless pot. The Breville is the most costly at $248.
