    Tips For Hard Cooking Eggs

There are a few things that will affect how hard or soft your eggs turn out:

    • what size eggs you use
    • how long you cook them
    • whether you use low pressure or high pressure
    • whether you use a quick release or natural release
    • whether you use an ice bath to stop the cooking

Try the recommended method first, then adjust any of the things in the above list to get softer or firmer eggs. You may need to test this a few times to get the eggs just the way you like them. Once you find your perfect settings, it really is as simple as just adding the water and eggs and pushing the egg button. You’ll have your perfect eggs every time!

Pour The Water Over The Eggs

Simply pour the 4 cups of water with baking soda over the eggs. The water should go slightly above the bottom of the rack basket, so the eggs will barely be in a bit of water. They will not be submerged. The main point of this method is pressure steam cooking. You are not boiling them in the classic sense.

Note about Steamer basket: When I’m cooking 1-6 eggs , the traditional steamer basket works fine. But, if I’m cooking more than 6, like for an egg salad or deviled eggs, then it’s much easier to use this Silicone Steamer Basket. It has long and convenient handles that make it easy to lower the heavy basket in and to pull it out.

The perfect technique for Instant Pot eggs is called the 5-5-5 method. What is the 5-5-5 method for cooking eggs? Here it is, simply:

    • 5 minutes to come to pressure
    • 5 minutes cook time
    • 5 minutes natural release

I like to add an extra step of cooling the eggs in an ice bath after they are finished cooking. But even with this extra ice-bath step, youll still have perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs in about 20 minutes.

To make an ice bath for your hard-boiled eggs, add a few cups of ice cubes to a big bowl full of cold water. When the eggs are done cooking in the pressure cooker, carefully transfer them to the bowl full of ice water. This stops the cooking and helps protect against that gray ring that can develop around egg yolks when they get overcooked.

    Why Use An Ice Bath

The ice bath will cool the eggs immediately so they wont keep cooking in the residual heat. Plus, the eggs will be shocked, which makes them very easy to peel.

What if you dont have ice? No problem at all! Simply run the eggs under cold tap water for 1 to 2 minutes, until they are cooled enough to peel. The eggs might be slightly easier to peel using the ice bath method, but the tap water method is a lazy one that I use all the time.

    High Pressure Or Low Pressure

We tested cooking Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs again using both High Pressure and Low Pressure to see which method gives the best results.

Maybe because our eggs are not farm fresh, and perhaps we have picky palates

When we use High Pressure to cook hard boiled eggs in Instant Pot, though the eggs are beautifully cooked with egg whites & yolks fully set, the texture of the egg whites are slightly chalky.

Note: You may not notice the texture difference with fresh eggs, but it gets noticeable with older eggs.

    Why The Pressure Cooker Works

I’ve actually been sitting on this revelation for a few months now, just because I didn’t trust the evidence I saw with my own eyes: Two eggs or a dozen, fresh eggs or weeks old, white eggs or brown eggs, it didn’t matter. The shells slipped easily off each time, leaving a smooth and pristine hard boiled egg.

There are a few theories for why this is. Some say that, similar to steaming eggs, the pressure cooker forces steam inside the egg’s shell during cooking, causing it to separate from the egg white. Alton Brown’s theory is that it’s more about the rapid temperature change inside the sealed pot.

Whatever the reason, it works! Making hard-cooked eggs in the pressure cooker is the only method I’ve found that has worked for me every single time.

Advantage Of Using Steamer Rack Or Trivet For Making Steamed Boiled Eggs In Instant Pot

In this method of making eggs, we use the steamer rack or trivet that comes with the instant pot to make steamed eggs that has the texture of boiled eggs.

This method is very popular among instant pot users to make eggs, especially with the 5-5-5 method since most prefers soft boiled eggs.

The main advantage I find with using a steamer rack or trivet to steam the eggs in the instant pot is that, I never had an instance of broken egg in the instant pot when I follow this method.

While using stove top method of boiling eggs, occasionally I used to find a cracked egg on the process, which I didnt like.

When I directly boil the eggs in the instant pot without trivet too, the chances of broken or cracked eggs are little to none compared to traditional stove top boiling method.

However, with this method of using a steamer rack or trivet, there is really no chance of the eggs cracking while they are getting cooked. That way, you get perfect steamed, boiled eggs every time!

Another advantage of making eggs in the instant pot is easy peeling of the eggs, which you probably know by now!

The ingredient list is pretty simple when it comes to hard boiling eggs:

    How To Peel Eggs

One of the major quandaries when troubleshooting this recipe was how to easily peel a hard-boiled egg once its cooked.

    3 Tips for Easy-to-Peel Hard-Boiled Eggs:

    • Ice Bath: An ice bathimmediately after you finish cooking the eggs is crucial and ice them for at least 5 minutes! The longer you ice them the easier they are to peel.
    • Rolling it Out: Hitting the rounded bottom of the egg and then vigorously rolling the egg resulted in an egg that was easier to peel.
    • Running under Cold Water: If your eggs are still being a bit tricky, run them under cold water while peeling. Make sure the water runs between the egg white and the membrane so it helps to separate the two.

Some say old eggs are easier to peel. If you happen to have some week or two-week-old eggs, go ahead and use those up.

If you dont, no problem! In my dozens of egg trials, I did not see a huge difference.

How To Use Your Instant Pot To Make Hard

The Instant Pot’s amazing versatility means you can use the multi-function appliance to steam, pressure cook, or slow cook your favorite foods and recipes. For hard-boiled eggs, the “pressure cook” function is the setting you’ll be using. Some Instant Pots even have a built-in “egg” pressure cook setting.

An Instant Pot is an easy way to make hard-boiled eggs by following Shumski’s simple “five-five-release” cooking formula. “Essentially, you cook them for five minutes, let them sit for five minutes, and then release the pressure,” he says.

  • Fill the Instant Pot with water. Use one cup of water for six eggs. Place the steaming rack in the inner pot.
  • Place the eggs directly on a steaming rack. Space them evenly or use a silicone insert. Close and lock the lid and set the valve to “Sealing.”
  • Set your Instant Pot. Choose the “Pressure Cook” option, select “High Pressure,” and set the timer to five minutes. Press start.
  • Let the eggs rest. After cooking has completed, wait five minutes. This will allow the pressure to come down naturally, which will prevent your eggs from overcooking.
  • Release the pressure. Use a wooden spoon to turn the pressure release valve to “Venting.” This will release the pressure. The round steam exhaust safety valve is positioned on the Instant Pot’s lid. Some valves have a “handle,” which aid in positioning.
  • Remove your eggs. Press “Cancel” and remove the Instant Pot lid.

How To Make Instant Pot Chicken Breast

    • Place chicken breasts in the inner pot of the instant pot and season with salt and pepper.
    • Add in 1 cup pineapple juice or chicken stock and season with minced garlic or garlic powder.
    • Place lid on instant pot and be sure vent knob is pointed towards sealed.
    • Set pressure cooker to the cooking time based on the size of chicken breasts. NOT how many chicken breasts you are cooking.
    • Once the cooking time has elapsed, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes before doing a quick release of pressure. This is key to keeping your chicken breasts tender–don’t be tempted to do a quick release of pressure.
    • Remove the chicken breasts from the liquid and let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving or shredding.

    Instant Pot Vs Stovetop

    Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

One of the primary benefits of cooking your eggs in the Instant Pot is that it is a science, not an art.

There is no guessing or eye balling when the water is at the right temperature, wondering when you should set the timer.

Nope, boiling eggs in the Instant Pot is as simple as putting your eggs in a basket, pressing a few buttons, and then waiting for it to do its magic!

How Long To Boil Eggs In The Instant Pot:

Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs: 5 minutes on high pressure was what it took for consistently fully cooked egg whites with a wet yolk. Ive seen several tutorials say 4, 3 or even 2 minutes, but I found anything less than 5 minutes to have a portion of the whites still a little wet and more difficult to peel.

Medium Boiled Eggs: A range of 6-8 minutes seemed to all produced medium boiled eggs. These have fully cooked whites with a tender and somewhat creamy center.

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs: It took from 9-10 minutes on high pressure with 10 minutes being a dry yolk the ideal texture for making deviled eggs.

Why Did My Eggs Turn Brown In The Instant Pot

This can happen when your eggs are overcooked. Ive never had it happen if I dont cook them longer than 5 minutes, but if it does happen to you, just know that its harmless and you can still enjoy your eggs. If your eggs are too overcooked, it may be best to turn them into an egg salad or deviled eggs.

Insert The Basket In The Pot

You will need to have a basket. The basket will elevate the eggs from the surface of the pot.

If you place the eggs directly in the pot, it will work, but it will burn the shell. It doesnt affect the taste too much, but you will get brown spots on the egg shells and on the eggs themselves. Same goes for any part of the egg touching the sides.

If you use the basket and an egg is leaning up against the side, you will get some slight browning on the shell, but not as badly as if you just placed the egg straight into the pot. Straight into the pot will produce the brown burned spots on the shell that will also transfer to the hard boiled egg. If it is leaning against the side, you will get slight browning on the side, but it hasnt transferred to the egg.

Does that make sense? I hope it does. That is the one main issue with the oven eggs brown spots from the shell getting burned. Like I said, it doesnt really affect taste, but its not a beautiful egg anymore.

The point is, if you have the basket rack, this is going to produce the best results!
