Pressure Cooker Mashed Potatoes: Mashing
How do you like your mashed potatoes? Dense and creamy or light and fluffy? Im firmly in the light and creamy camp. This means that I whip my potatoes with a handheld mixer instead of mashing them with the traditional potato masher.
Here are the tools you can use for mashing potatoes
Results: Dense, thick mashed potatoes often dotted with small lumps.
Pros: Easy-to-use. Kid-friendly.
link: the potato masher that I use and love.
Ricer/ Food Mill
Results: Creamy, dense mashed potatoes
Pros: Makes mashed potatoes with a silky texture. No lumps here.
Cons: Pain to clean
link: the food mill that I have. Nothing fancy for me.
Note: You dont have to peel potatoes before putting them through a ricer. Ive found this to be somewhat true. Some of the peel always gets through and the holes tend to clog on me. Id rather spend a few minutes peeling the potatoes than futzing with a clogged ricer.
Pros: Whips a batch of potatoes very quickly.
Cons: Dirties a second bowl.
Cons: Turns potatoes into a dense, gluey puree. Avoid the food processor when youre making mashed potatoes.
So which should you use? Whichever one you like. Seriously. They all make great mashed potatoes.

Whats The Difference Between A Sweet Potato And A Yam
Although sweet potatoes and yams are often used interchangeably, they are, in fact, two different tubers.
A sweet potato is generally orange in color . They are sweeter in taste than yams and the flesh has a shiny, even appearance when cut. They are also more slender in the middle and tapered on both ends, and they have more beta-carotene, iron, protein, and sugar than yams do.
While a yam is a root vegetable that looks kind of tree-barky and textured on the outside. They are starchy and not sweetmore like a white, russet potato than a sweet potato, and not orange on the inside at all. Real yams are harder to find and are not often in conventional grocery stores.

Equipment You Will Need
- Instant Pot or Similar Electric Pressure Cooker or Multicooker. This is the Instant Pot I own and loveits a basic 6-quart model. You can use this method for any size Instant Pot . Simply ensure you adjust the number of sweet potatoes and amount of water accordingly.
- Trivet. To keep the sweet potatoes from burning on the bottom, you will need to insert the handled trivet that came with it, which also functions as a steamer basket. If you cannot find your trivet, Id suggest finding an inexpensive replacement, such as this one.

Do You Cook Sweet Potatoes The Same As Normal Potatoes
You can boil or steam sweet potatoes in the same way as ordinary potatoes, except that the cooking time will be a little less. Wash them gently, cut them into small-to-medium pieces, and drop them into a pan of boiling salted water or place them in the steamer. Thats especially true if the potatoes are mashed.

Allow Time For Natural Release
There are two ways to open an Instant Pot after cooking natural and manual.
Natural release means the pot depressurizes all on its own, which takes time. Manual release means you flip that valve on top from Sealing > Venting, and all the steam pours out the top until its depressurized enough to open.
Give your Instant Pot sweet potatoes about 10 minutes or so to naturally release. If you pop open the pot right when its done its unlikely the potatoes will be cooked through.
You can leave them for much longer than 10 minutes as well. Ive cooked mine and left the house for a couple of hours and come back and eaten them hot when I returned.
What Size Instant Pot Should I Buy
If you cooking for one or two, the 3-quart Instant Pot is the perfect size. It’s ideal for individuals who cook only for themselves, college students, or for empty nesters.
With most of the features of the larger versions, this smaller option is perfect for small kitchens or to use in an RV.
If you are cooking for one but still do a lot of meal prep and batch cooking, you might want to go with the 6-quart.

How To Make Instant Pot Steak And Potatoes With Gravy
First things first, lets prep the meat.
I bought pre-cut stew meat from my grocery store. The stew meat is sirloin chunks. You could even cut your own steak into bite sized pieces.
The meat is going to marinade before we pop it into the Instant Pot. The marinade really helps to make the meat tender as well as give it a nice flavor.
The marinade consists of soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce , oil, garlic, onion and parsley.
Let the meat sit in the marinade for as long as you can. The longer the better.
Ive gotten away with only marinating for an hour before but the the night before or morning of works great!
I like to put my meat and the marinade into a ziplock bag. I always press all of the air out of the bag so the meat really soaks up all of that marinade.
So, refrigerate the meat soaking up all of that delicious marinade for as long as you can, up to 24 hours.
When you are ready to make dinner, first brown the meat in the Instant Pot on the saute setting. The saute setting acts just like your stove top.
A lot of people dont know this, but you can actually adjust the temperature on the Instant Pot while using the saute setting! Each model adjusts a little differently, on the 6 qt duo if you hit the adjust button right after the Saute button it will toggle between the 3 different temperature settings.
While the meat is browning, peel and cut your potatoes.
After the meat has been browned for a few minutes, remove the meat from the Instant Pot.
Tips For Making The Best Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes
1. Start with similarly-sized potatoes. To guarantee that the potatoes are all evenly cooked, its essential to start with sweet potatoes that are all about the same size.
2. Add a trivet and water to the Instant Pot. Youll start by adding one cup of water to the bottom of the Instant Pot, which is what creates the steam that cooks the potatoes. Just as important is a trivet or steamer basket, which keeps the potatoes elevated above the water.
3. Use potato size to determine cook time. You can cook any and all sizes of sweet potatoes in your Instant Pot. To get the tender, creamy potatoes you crave, plan on a shorter cook time for small spuds and a longer one for the larger ones .

How Long To Cook Sweet Potatoes In The Instant Pot
Cooking potatoes or sweet potatoes is the one recipe where you need to adjust the cooking time based on the size of the potato. Unfortunately, theres no one-size-fits-all pressure cooking time.
The cooking time depends on the size of the sweet potatoes. Now I will share some pointers so you can measure the circumference of the sweet potato to determine the cook time.
Below are the size and pressure cooking time on high pressure:
Small-Medium – 15 minutes
Large – 22 minutes
Very Large – 30 minutes
Follow this with a natural pressure release. If you are in a hurry, then you can do a 10 minute NPR. This means let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes then release the pressure manually by turning the knob to venting.
Do note that the instant pot takes time to come to pressure and release pressure.
The important thing to note is that I do not pierce the sweet potatoes when cooking in the instant pot.
Just in case the sweet potatoes are not done well, then pop them in again for 5 minutes.
How To Store & Freeze Sweet Potatoes
These cubed sweet potatoes are a simple recipe that is great to make ahead of time for meal planning. This is because it stores and freezes very well. You can store cooked sweet potatoes in an air-tight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. To freeze them, seal sweet potatoes in an air-tight ziplock bag and press to remove all the air from it. Then place in the freezer to store for up to 2 months. To defrost frozen sweet potatoes, place them in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. Once thawed, they can be microwaved to reheat and enjoy.

The greatest antioxidant power of sweet potatoes compared to roasting and steaming can be maintained during cooking. Baking vitamin A can be reduced by 80%, twice as much as cooking. Therefore, from a nutritional point of view, boiling sweet potatoes should be recommended for cooking rather than frying.

STEP 3. Secure the lid and make sure the valve is set to SEALING.

Are Sweet Potatoes Fattening
This versatile veggie can be used into making a variety of delicious dishes. However, they have gained a reputation of being a fattening vegetable and are considered a high-calorie food and have a lot of starch in them. But, thats not true. In fact, sweet potatoes are considered as a healthier alternative of potatoes.
Prep The Instant Pot For Steaming
Ensure the gasket is in the lid and the insert is inside of your Instant Pot. Now add 1 cup of water to the insert of the Instant Pot / electric pressure cooker. Place your vegetable steamer basket in too. I use a collapsible steamer basket that works great in regular pots and in electric pressure cookers. It is inexpensive, takes up little room in your cabinet, and works great. I highly recommend these.

Butbutbutpotatoes arent Paleo!
Once again, with feeling: It all depends on what you mean when you say Paleo. There is, after all, no such thing as one definitive Paleo diet. Potatoes may not have been available to cavemen, but I really dont care. Historical re-enactment aint my cup of tea.
My personal template for Paleo eating focuses on nutrient-packed whole foods that dont hurt me. For me, potatoes fall into that category. After checking out Bill and Hayleys post on the Paleosity of potatoes, listening to the safe starch debate, and soaking in Mat Lalondes talk about nutrient density at the 2012 Ancestral Health Symposium , Ive decided that an occasional portion of peeled potatoes are a-OK on my plate. Your circumstances may be different for instance, if youre on a super-low-carb protocol at the moment, youre probably not looking to down a bowl of spuds.
Blah, blah, blah, science, science, science, blah, blah, blah.
With that pesky business out of the way, let me show you how to use a pressure cooker to make spuds with crispy exteriors and fluffy interiors in no time flat.
