The instant pot provides a safe method to incubate yogurtkeep it at a constant warm temperature in the target zone of 110 and 115 degrees F allowing the bacteria in it to multiply properly and thicken to create smooth, creamy yogurt.

How To Make Vegan Yogurt In The Instant Pot

There’s barely a recipe here, but the instructions are important to follow along carefully, so please do so for the best results.

You will begin the process by soaking 2 cups of raw cashews or cashew pieces with 2 cups of filtered water for at least 30 minutes. I don’t care how high-powered your blender is, soaking the cashews makes a really smooth yogurt, so do it. Do not drain the water.

Next put all of it in the blender and blitz into a really smooth, silky cream. Remove the cream to an oven-safe bowl that will fit inside the Instant Pot liner. I use a glass Pyrex bowl.

Warm the yogurt in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir, then warm for 30 more seconds. The yogurt will be slightly lukewarm, which will create a nice, cozy atmosphere for the bacteria to start growing.

Stir in the powder from two probiotic capsules . I always use the PB8 vegetarian brand, which I buy online. It works great.

You can also use a yogurt as your starter. Any vegan or non-vegan yogurt will do, but it has to have active live cultures so make sure you read the info on the container. A homemade probiotic yogurt is great too. Stir in the yogurt starter into the cashew cream instead of the probiotic capsule powder.

Once the powder or starter has been stirred into the yogurt, place it inside the steel liner of the Instant Pot. Click the lid on, and press the “yogurt” function. Set the time to 12 hours for a tangier yogurt, or 10 hours for a less tangy version. I usually do 12 hours.

To Make Greek Yogurt:

Instant Pot Coconut Milk Yogurt (Vegan!)

After the yogurt is made place cheese cloth over a fine mesh strainer and set it on a large bowl. Pour the yogurt into the strainer and allow it to strain for at least 2 hours or up to 6. . Scoop out the thick Greek yogurt and store in a container in the fridge for 7-10 days.

Whey from the yogurt will drain into the bowl and it can be discarded or saved and used for protein smoothies or shakes.

Can I use skim milk?

Yes! You can make non-fat yogurt in the instant pot using skim milk, but because skim milk is missing the fat that helps thicken the yogurt, add an extra tablespoon of yogurt starter for every quart of milk. So, for 1 gallon of skim milk and 6 tablespoons of yogurt starter.

Troubleshooting: Yogurt is runny and didnt set up.

This can happen if too much starter is added, or if the yogurt has not incubated for long enough. Leave it incubating, checking it every hour. It could also be from adding the starter when the milk was too hot, killing the active cultures.

Add flavors and mix-ins:

One your yogurt has chilled, add flavors, sweeteners or toppings, like:

  • Vanilla extract

One of the biggest reasons I love my pressure cooker is for Homemade Yogurt.

It was one of the first recipes I mastered and I make it on a weekly basis.

But a lot of people have been asking how to make Cold Start Yogurt, and I am here to say, Instant Pot Cold Start Yogurt is so much easier than my original Instant Pot Yogurt Recipe.

Methods Of Making Yogurt In Your Instant Pot

There is a few methods on how to make homemade yogurt in your Instant Pot. First being the boil method. You boil the milk to a certain temperature and then add your starter. This method can be used if your Instant Pot does NOT have a yogurt button. It can also be used with milk that is not ultra pasteurized.;

The second method is a no boil method using ultra filtered milk and ultra pasteurized milk. Which sounds easier? The no boil method. This is called a cold start yogurt. Which milk is ultra filtered and ultra pasteurized? I have found that Fairlife milk works great every time.;

There are more popular ways to sweeten your yogurt with this method. One being coffee creamer and the other being sweetened condensed milk. To me coffee creamer seems a bit more appealing and not as sweet. I also like that you can change the flavor of your yogurt by which coffee creamer you are using.;

I tend to like cleaner ingredients so I am using Coffee-mate Natural Bliss coffee creamer.; Dont want a sweet yogurt? Skip the coffee creamer or sweetened condensed milk.;

Not all Instant Pots have the yogurt button. Make sure yours does before starting this recipe.

Anybody Using Instant Pot For Making Yogurt How Is It Going And What Do You Use

Yup! You basically have 4 options:

  • Traditional yogurt method

  • Ultra-filtered milk

  • Non-dairy

  • Jars

  • For a pot of regular dairy-based yogurt, the procedure is pretty simple, just split up over time:

  • Heat the milk up to kill any competing bacteria

  • Let it cool down, not to cold but to warm, then stir in the starter

  • Let it incubate , then optionally strain it if you want it thicker

  • Here’s a good tutorial:

    A few tips:

    I was never super into yogurt growing up, but once you master making it in the IP, it’s easy to integrate it into your routine because you just heat up the milk before bed, let it cool down, stir in some yogurt, and let it sit overnight!

    I actually really like the morning yogurt parfaits they have at McDonalds, which is like a sweetened yogurt with the fruit & crispy oats on top, plus I never have a very big appetite when I wake up, so sometimes I’ll whip up one of those as a pre-breakfast snack.

    Anyway…not a hard process to do. Takes about a day total but your actual hands-on time is like super minimal, just heat up the milk, let it cool down & stir in the yogurt, the let it sit for like a day. Optionally strain at the end if you want it thicker, or stir in flavorings! Also easy to make fruit-on-bottom or jam cups!

    When Will Your Yogurt Begin To Thicken When Making Homemade Yogurt In Ninja Foodi

    How to make Coconut Yogurt in the Instant Pot

    One tip is to be patient, this is a long process to make homemade yogurt. At around hour 5 or 6 you will begin to see your milk mixture start to thicken. Then as time passes it will get thicker and thicker as I stated above.;

    I always get a little anxious that it isnt going to work. Each time I check it is that extra milky texture with no thickness. But you have to wait and watch, and almost always it starts to thicken like clockwork.;

    Instant Pot Vegan Coconut Milk Yogurt- creamy, delicious and free from additives!

    The Instant Pot is officially my new favorite kitchen gadget. I’m amazed at how many different types of food can be created using this one pot! So far, I’ve made countless soups, bread and now vegan yogurt!;

    This vegan coconut milk yogurt is easy and fun to make. However, it takes 12-24 hours to ferment so it requires some planning. This may not be an instant gratification meal, but it is ideal for meal prep!

    Ingredients:

    Making yogurt can seem intimidating, but it’s actually simple with the Instant Pot! You have to make sure all your equipment is sterilized and that the mixture is kept at the correct temperature.;

    The first step is to combine the coconut milk and agar agar flakes in the Instant Pot bowl. Then, press the “Saute” button and cook until it reaches a rolling boil. Turn off the pot, and wait for the mixture to decrease in temperature until it has reached 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Stir in the probiotic powder and press the “Yogurt” button. Ferment the yogurt for at least 12 hours and up to 24 hours. How long you ferment depends on how tart you like your yogurt. I don’t like tart yogurt, so I ferment for 12 hours.;

    Once the yogurt is finished fermenting, pour it into a tightly sealed jar and place it in the fridge. The yogurt will thicken as it chills.;

    How Long To Let Your Ninja Foodi Yogurt Incubate

    This is all about preference right here. The longer your yogurt sets in the incubate stage the sourer it will become. Personally, I like a bit of sour yogurt, you can always dress it up with fruits, jam, and other toppings. For a Greek-style yogurt that is thicker, you will leave your yogurt in this stage for longer. If you prefer less thick and not as tart, you would pull earlier.;

    Why Make Yogurt In An Instant Pot:

    How to Make Instant Pot Coconut Yogurt

    If youve ever made homemade yogurt or really anything fermented, you know its important to maintain a specific temperature for a certain period of time. For best results, yogurt should maintain a temperature of 95 to 115 degrees F.;

    Making the yogurt in a pressure cooker ensures the temperature stays at an even 110 degrees F for the amount of time you specify.

    In addition, making yogurt in a sealed container ensures no random bad bacteria contaminate the yogurt.

    Making Coconut Yogurt Is Probably Easier Than You Think

    Although it sounds complicated , making yogurt is probably less effort than picking it up at the store . . . and cheaper, too! The basic recipe is coconut milk + good bacteria + warmth = tangy, coconutty goodness.;

    However, because I like CREAMY, tangy, coconutty goodness, I add a thickener into the mix. Gelatin is my go-to, although Ive heard others have had success with agar agar powder. So my process looks like this:;

  • Add gelatin to one cup of of room temperaturecoconut milk and stir to combine.
  • Activate the gelatin by adding one cup of hot coconut milk and stir again.;
  • Cool the mixture down by adding two more cups of coconut milk so you dont kill the good bacteria when you add them.;
  • Add the good bacteria plus some food for them to eat
  • Let warmth and time work their magic. In 12-24 hours youll have creamy, homemade coconut;yogurt.

    The very first time I dabbled with the dairy-free lifestyle was back in 2014. When my daughter was born, she was pretty quickly diagnosed with a Milk and Soy Protein Intolerance , meaning that even the slightest bit of cheese or tofu eaten by me would come through my breastmilk and cause her incredible stomach upset. Thankfully, most babies grow out of MSPI relatively quicklyJuni was done with it by her six-month markand go on to happily eat grilled cheese sandwiches.

    But that six months sans dairy really helped teach me something about my own bodyit really functions better when Im off the cow juice. Ever since I stopped eating dairy for Junis sake, Ive been very careful to limit my own intakeand that meant I started experimenting with dairy-free alternatives to my favorite dairy products. Thats how I discovered the amazing versatility of cashew cream. And thats why I started making my own dairy-free Instant Pot;coconut yogurt.

    Making yogurt in the Instant Pot is so incredibly fool-proof. If youve ever been intimidated by making your own yogurt before, the Instant Pot is your answer. It makes it so hands off;and so simpleits honestly almost easier than just going to the store to buy premade coconut yogurt.

    Using an Instant Pot makes this process easier when it comes to keeping a proper temperature for fermentation, but you can also use a simple glass jar in a warm area of your home for similar results. Im still in minimalist-mode after living in tiny apartment kitchens for so long in Los Angeles, so I aim to keep my kitchen appliances to a minimum.

    Thats why when I decided to finally take the plunge and buy the Instant Pot, I wanted to get the model with the yogurt-making function, so it could multitask. Using the yogurt function did NOT come intuitively to me, but I finally figured out a one-pot method that makes the yogurt-making process as easy as possible.

    Vegan Instant Pot Yogurt

    Making vegan yogurt in an Instant Pot takes the guesswork out of a process that tends to depend on things beyond your control, like the weather. And it couldn’t be easier. Here’s my foolproof, two-ingredient recipe for a cultured vegan Instant Pot yogurt that’s creamy, thick like Greek yogurt, tangy, probiotic and delicious.

    I know so many of you, like me, love making your own vegan yogurt at home. A few years back I posted a probiotic cashew yogurt recipe that’s easy, delicious, and beats the heck out of paying a small fortune to buy a tub of vegan yogurt at the supermarket. So many of you have made it since, loved it, and continue to make it.

    But one thing that often emerges in comments is concerns about the varying times it takes for the yogurt to set. Even in the cozy atmosphere of an oven with the light turned on, it is not easy to predict when the yogurt will be ready. Because that time really depends to a great degree on factors outside your control: how cold or warm it is outside, which affects how cold or warm it is even inside your temperature-controlled home.

    That’s why, today, I want to share with you a recipe that takes all of that guesswork out of making vegan yogurt: my Instant Pot Vegan Yogurt.

    I love this Instant Pot vegan yogurt and I’ve pretty much switched to making my yogurt this way now. It turns out thicker, for one, and it is perfectly tangy and creamy. If you try it, I wanna know, so be sure to leave a comment below.
