Instant Pot Steam Canning: Part One

The Sauté is another non-pressure cooking program that can be used in place of a frying pan or flat-top grill. For recipes that call for browned onions or garlic, its important to sauté them before adding liquid to the pot as you will release a lot of flavor this way. Another reason to sauté first is for browning meat. Lastly, sautéeing before cooking is a great way to increase heat and reduce the amount of time your pot will take to come to pressure.

What Can I Use If I Dont Have A Steamer Basket

There are a bunch of things you can use instead of a dedicated steamer basket, but if youre serious about steaming, you should get a basket.

Still, when in an emergency, you can always use a metallic colander or something made out of metallic mesh. The secret is to find something that will resist the high heat and is big/small enough to fit your IP, while also keeping the food in the best position for steaming.

If you dont have one, check my guide here. I recommend using a steamer basket with feet .

If you have a steamer basket without legs, you can place the basket on the trivet.

If you dont have a steamer basket, you can make one yourself or place the veggies on the bottom of the Instant Pot.

Check the recipe to see if it includes any special instructions on time or ingredients to help you have a great finished dish.

The Instant Pot Is A Multi

I bought my first pressure cooker in 1993. It was old fashioned compared to the Instant Pot. Still, I loved it for all of the reasons outlined above. I cooked grains in it until I went grain-free in 2001. After that I used my pressure cooker for bone broth. Since my husband doesnt like the smell of our house when I slow cook a batch of bone broth for 48 hours, the pressure cooker is the perfect tool.

Still, I traded in my beloved decades old pressure cooker for the Instant Pot for a number of reasons. Why? Well, you simply cant beat the Instant Pot when it comes to functionalities. It is everything from a pressure cooker, to a slow cooker, to a yogurt maker, which I think is totally crazy in the best way!

So when I bought the Instant Pot I gave up my traditional pressure cooker, yogurt maker, and slow cooker. I was so happy to gain back some kitchen real estate for a change! When the boys set up their own homes, this will be one of the first things I buy them.

What Size Pot Should I Buy

New Instant Pot Duo Nova makes it easy to be a great cook ...

When thinking about purchasing an Instant Pot, the biggest question becomes, which one should I buy? They serve the same functions but depending on your lifestyle that will determine which one suits your needs.

The smaller 3 quart Instant Pot will feed approximately 2 people. Its not great for batch cooking, or meal prep because it wont make more than a couple of portions and probably wont have a lot of leftovers. Then, as the sizes go up, the more food it can fit.

Ideally, a family of 4 or more will do well with either a 6 quart or an 8 quart size. This is great for feeding your crew with the possibility of lots of leftovers, especially with the larger size. Keep in mind, the bigger the pot, the longer it takes to come to pressure and it also takes up more counter or storage space.

This is the hands-off, trust-the-process phase. Once the pot comes to pressure, the timer you initially set will begin counting down and this is considered the cooking time. The status symbol on the control panel will only show P = Pressure Cooking In Progress. The float valve is up.

The Instant Pot has a clever feedback loop mechanism that maintains a certain of amount of heat to make sure that the pot keeps the same amount of pressure for your specified amount of time . This pressure pushes the steam inside the pot into the food, which enables it to cook at a much faster rate.

In the instance of cooking rice, the grain will be cooked by the hot liquid from and from the steam penetrating it from the top and all directions. Are Instant Pots Safe To Use

We’ve all seen those cooker-horror-story Reddit threads, where users have shared their accounts of messy explosions of food going everywhere, including the kitchen ceiling.

But before you begin to ponder returning the pressure cooker you received for your birthday, know that many modern Instant Pots have safeguards and power cutoffs in place to avoid pressures or temperatures that may pose danger to your home.

Instant Pots have built-in sensors that regulate the cooker’s pressure and temperature based on the program you choose and the cooker shuts off automatically when it detects an unsafe temperature.

And although there have been some reports of certain Instant Pot models melting back in 2018, these units have since been recalled, according to Consumer Reports.

With this in mind, there’s no reason to feel discouraged to buy a pressure cooker, as they are generally considered safe to have on hand in the kitchen.

Why Is Instant Pot Steamed Fish A Good Idea

    • Perfect. Apparently, your Instant Pot can indeed make the most delicate, perfectly steamed, flaky fish. You just have to know what you’re doing.
    • Flavor. Instead of smothering your fish in flavor, you’re infusing it with flavor by cooking the fish in the Instant Pot.
    • Moist. Your fish will not dry out when you steam it in the Instant Pot. It’s not at all bland or dry, but is perfectly cooked every time.

    How To Do It

The process for traditional steaming with a glass lid is similar to the pressure steaming process:

    • Set up your Instant Pot with your trivet, steaming basket, and at least 1 cup of water.
    • . Doing so will create a steaming environment similar to steaming on the stovetop: the water in your pot will boil, the lid will retain the steam, and you will be able to watch your steaming food inside the pot through the clear lid.
    • With this method, you can also remove the lid periodically to check on or stir your food at any point during the steaming process, although you will want to be careful to leave the lid on for the majority of the process, in order to retain steam.

Once your vegetables are sufficiently cooked, simply turn off the pot as normal and remove them, being careful of all of the hot elements in the pot

    Safety Time Steam Is Hot

Steam is hotter than boiling water, and it can burn you badly. Keep your hand clear of the steam release valve when you do a quick release. Sometimes I even use the handle of a spoon to push it open instead.

If you have your Instant Pot near cabinets, be mindful when you do a quick releaseit can get a lot of condensation on your cabinets, which can damage them over time. To keep the steam at bay somewhat, you can tent the valve with a kitchen towel during a quick release. Foods like oatmeal, beans, and porridges can sputter goop through the steam valvethe towel trick is handy for those times, too.

Extra Accessories And A Secret Tip

Can you use your Instant Pot as a steamer?

A secret tip you may not initially know about your Instant Pot is the lid holder.

On the side handles you will see a hole that perfectly fits your lid. Place the lid here when you are sautéeing ingredients or serving up recipes.

    A few accessories to purchase:

    • Extra silicone rings Over time the silicone rings will stretch out or adopt the flavor of various recipes. Its great to have color-coded replacement rings on hand that are designated for certain types of recipes.
    • Steamer basket This can be used when cooking delicate items like eggs or when making stocks.
    • Glass Lid Using a glass lid when slow cooking and steaming allows you to see inside your pot while cooking.
    • Storage Lid Have some leftovers? Pop a silicone lid on top and store the stainless steel pot in the refrigerator.

Tips For Instant Pot Saut Mode

    • After you press the Sauté button, wait for the pot to get hot before adding your food. The display on most models will show Hot when the pot is hot.
    • Add cooking oil before adding meats or vegetables to the pot. The exception is that you do not need to add oil if you are browning ground beef or another meat that will release its own fat as it cooks.
    • When browning pieces of meat, such as chicken thighs, do not move the meat until it has formed a browned crust on the bottom. This usually takes a few minutes. Trying to move the meat too soon can cause it to stick to the bottom of the pot. Its also important to use enough oil, as I have found that delicate meats such as chicken tend to stick easily to the bottom of the pot.
    • Always deglaze the pot after sautéing. This means that you pour in a some of your cooking liquid, such as broth or water, and scrape up any bits that are stuck to the bottom of the pot. If you do not do this, you are much more likely to get a burn message while pressure cooking. Learn more about how to prevent the Instant Pot burn message here.
