Cleaning The Lid And Its Parts

How to Clean Your Instant Pot

Oils, aromatic seasonings, fats and liquids tend to settle into the Instant Pot’s seals and gaskets. Here’s a checklist for keeping it clean:

  • Check the steam release valve and red float valve. You’ll want to make sure they’re both free and clear of any food deposits or debris.
  • Remove the anti-block shield, a silicone nub that covers the float valve from the inside. With the shield off, you can get a better look at the float valve to confirm any blocks or clogs. It’s a small part, so take care not to misplace or lose it.
  • Remove the silicone sealing ring. This part easily picks up strong odors. One method to rid it of any unwanted smells is to wash it separately in the dishwasher. Make sure to select a high-temperature cycle such as sanitize. The combination of high heat and detergent should remove most of the unpleasant odors present.

The silicone ring found in the Instant Pot’s lid tends to attract odors quickly.

Clean Your Instant Pot Sealing Ring

The sealing ring is made of durable, heat-resistant silicone that provides the air-tight seal thats critical for your Instant Pot to work properly. You can hand wash the sealing ring with warm, soapy water or run it through the dishwasher. Wait until the sealing ring is dry before replacing it in the correct position.

Another option is to steam clean the sealing ring while its still attached to your Instant Pot. Add one cup of water, a cup of white vinegar and one cut up lemon rind. Run the Steam program for two minutes, then remove the sealing ring and let it air dry.

The sealing ring is critical for maintaining the right pressure in your Instant Pot. Scrutinize it for cracking or tears after each wash. If you see any damage, you should install a new sealing ring. The manufacturer suggests using only genuine Instant Pot sealing rings, as using those from other brands may void your warranty.

Since silicone can pick up food odors and discolorations during cooking, you may want to use one sealing ring for spicy foods and another for sweet foods. An easy solution for getting rid of sealing ring odor is to soak the ring in white vinegar and let it air dry.

How To Clean Instant Pot Ring And Remove The Odors

Instant Pots silicone ring is porous and absorbs odours easily that cannot be removed with dish or dishwasher soap. However, good news is it usually does not affect the taste of food. For example, lid after cooking Instant Pot beef stew can be hand washed and used for making Instant Pot oatmeal without sweet porridge tasting like garlick-y stew.

Silicone ring tip: Any cooking utensil and silicone sealing ring washed in a dishwasher with mainstream dishwasher detergent, will absorb the taste and smell of synthetic fragrances. It is because silicone material is very porous. To avoid this unpleasantry and for health reasons, we use this natural dishwasher detergent and it works wonderful!

To remove the odour from the sealing ring, soak it in a solution of cold water and vinegar overnight, about every few months or as often as you wish. Place ring in the inner pot of Instant Pot or large bowl, cover will cold water until it is fully submerged, and add 1 cup white vinegar. Leave on the counter overnight, then rinse and make sure to place back in the lid correctly and most importantly tight.

Storage tip: Storing lid upside down allows air to flow through and helps to eliminate cooking smell from the Instant Pots inner pot and the lid.

Clean Instant Pot Lid And Components

How To Clean The Instant Pot

Before cleaning your pressure cooker’s lid, the anti-block shield and silicone sealing ring should be removed and cleaned separately. The anti-block shield is a small round or oval element installed underneath the lid. To remove the anti-block shield, use your thumb to gently push the piece toward the lid rim and lift up to pop it off. Hand-wash the shield in warm, soapy water and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Remove the sealing ring and inspect it carefully for cracking, warping, or other damage, which are signs you need to replace it. The sealing ring can be hand-washed in soapy water or placed in the dishwasher. Because it is heat-resistant, you can place it on either rack of your dishwasher.

With the anti-block shield and sealing ring removed, wash the Instant Pot lid in warm, soapy water or place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Once clean, check the lid’s steam release valve and float valve to ensure they’re clear of food particles that could prevent the cooker from maintaining pressure. If needed, remove and hand-wash the cup that collects condensation.
