Best Way To Store And Use Instant Pot Potatoes

If you’re storing your cooked taters for later use, be sure to bring them to room temperature. Then, store them in a zip-top bag or airtight container, making sure to squeeze as much air as possible. They will keep in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.

Potatoes don’t love the freezer, since they lose moisture there. But, if you toss them in some butter or oil, they will retain their texture. It’s best to defrost them in the fridge for a day before reheating.

Pre-cooked potatoes can be reheated in the microwave, crisped in the air fryer, or roasted in the oven. They can be used cold in potato salads or reheated and mashed with butter and milk/stock to make mashed potatoes.

Do I Wrap Instant Pot Potatoes With Foil

Nope. Simply prick potatoes, place on included rack or trivet, and pour in 1 cup of water.

If you want to hold the potatoes at temperature for a while after cooking, wrapping in foil will keep potatoes hot until ready to serve. Alternatively, place cooked potatoes directly on cooking rack in a low oven.

    Why Use The Instant Pot

Baked Potatoes are probably one of the worlds best side dishes. And maybe even the most popular.

Potatoes are pretty affordable, and quite filling. You can customize them in so many ways with various toppings. Or make au gratin potatoes!

However, you first have to start with the perfect baked potato.

For years Ive been baking my potatoes in the oven, just like my mom taught me, and her mom taught her. But are they really the easiest side dish when often times they take LONGER than the main dish?

I mean, sure they are EASY, but they can be time consuming.

Until now. Ive recently discovered my love of making potatoes in the Instant Pot.

Not only do they come out creamy and perfect on the inside, but they are done in far less time than it takes in the oven!

S For The Best Instant Pot Potatoes

    1. Start with similarly sized potatoes. Cooking up tender, creamy potatoes requires choosing russets that are all about the same size. This ensures that the potatoes cook evenly.

    2. Pierce the potatoes. While Ive never experienced this firsthand, Ive heard plenty of stories about un-pierced potatoes exploding during cooking. Using a fork to poke holes in the potatoes prevents too much pressure from building up and allows steam to escape.

    3. Add a trivet and water to the Instant Pot. As with all Instant Pot recipes, its essential to start with liquid in the bottom of the pot. Here, a cup of water helps create the pressure that allows the potatoes to cook. Just as important is a trivet or steamer basket, which keeps the potatoes elevated from sitting in the water.

    4. Use potato size to determine the cook time. You can cook any and all sizes of russet potatoes in your Instant Pot. To get the tender, creamy potatoes you crave, plan on a slightly shorter cook time for small spuds and a little longer for the larger ones .

Tips For The Best Instant Pot Vortex Air Fryer Baked Potatoes

The keys to a great baked potato are:

    • Potato choice: Use a good russet baking potato. Other potatoes such as red potatoes or Yukon gold are better for making french fries or roasted potatoes.
    • Rubbing the potatoes with oil, salt, and seasoning: I like to use avocado oil or olive oil. The oil both helps keep the inside of the potato from getting dry and also helps get the skin nice and crispy. Seasoning with salt also helps make the skin crisp up, and adding any other seasoning that you happen to like is just plain tasty and fun!
    • Give them room to breathe: Dont crowd the tray. Make sure there is air space all around each of your potatoes so that they will get evenly cooked with a nice crispy skin.

Does The Potato Type And Size Matter

    Instant Pot Baked Potatoes

Yes! Russets or Idaho work best because theyre a starchy type of potato which cooks up light and fluffy. The weight is the biggest factor with cook time, I suggest looking for similarly-sized spuds. Use the scale at the store to individually weigh them. You want them to be within an ounce of each other otherwise they wont cook through consistently.

Directions for use Clean the potatoes with water. Add 1 cup of water to the steel insert of the instant pot. High pressure cooking in steam mode for 10 minutes. When the Instant Pot beeps, release the pressure naturally. Remove the potatoes from the instant pot to stop cooking.

    What Are Instant Pot Potatoes

This method transforms starchy Russet potatoes into classic, creamy baked potatoes, begging to be split open and served with your favorite toppings.

With their tender, fluffy centers, Instant Pot potatoes are very similar to baked potatoes, but there are two key differences that set them apart: cook time and the outer skin. Since the Instant Pot cooks the potatoes in a closed vessel with steam pressure, cooking happens in a fraction of the time youd need in the oven. This also means, however, that the skin is soft rather than crisp. Trust me the trade-off is well worth it.

How Long Do You Cook Baked Potatoes In An Instant Pot

The pressure cooking time depends on the size of your potatoes. I have tested out lots of different potatoes of varying sizes to determine these cook times. It is important to cook potatoes that are roughly the same size so that they will cook in the same amount of time.

Small Potatoes : 12 minutes at high pressure plus 10 minutes natural pressure release

Medium Potatoes : 16 minutes at high pressure plus 10 minutes natural pressure release

Large Potatoes : 20 minutes at high pressure plus 10 minutes natural pressure release

When Im not sure about the cook time for my exact size of potatoes, I always err on the side of adding an extra minute or two to the cook time. Id rather end up with softer potatoes than under-cooked potatoes and have to do a second pressure cooking cycle.

Can I Steam Potatoes Without A Trivet

If you want to boil potatoes while cooking something else in the main pot, then I suggest to use the mode needed for what you are cooking in the main pot. The Steam function works best when food is being steamed on a trivet. It increases the temperature inside the pot very fast, as it does not expect to have any food directly in contact with the bottom of the pot.

Can You Put Aluminum Foil In An Instant Pot

The short answer is yes, you can put aluminum foil in an instant pot.

So if youre wondering if you can wrap your potatoes in foil for the Instant Pot like you would if you were to put them into the oven, you can do that. However, I do not do that because it actually adds time to the cooking process when you do that. Its just a little bit harder for the moisture to reach the potatoes. Since the whole point of my cooking potatoes in the Instant Pot was to make them go faster, I like to shave off as much time as I can.

You really dont need the foil either, unless you just like how it looks or you plan to serve them in foil.
