I like to make a dozen hard boiled eggs on the weekend and then use them for breakfast or add them to my lunch during the week. Its so easy, convenient and healthy. One Caveat To Pressure Cooker Eggs
The only un-perfect thing about this way of hard boiling eggs is that, every so often, one of the eggs will crack its shell during cooking. When this has happened to me, it’s usually been during the 5 minute “natural release” period after the eggs are already cooked, so the crack is only superficially cosmetic. Not ideal if you’re planning to dye a bunch of Easter eggs, of course, but perfectly fine for deviled eggs.
If your eggs seem to be cracking more often, or are cracking before the whites are set, try cooking them at low pressure instead of high pressure. My own tests at low pressure gave inconsistent results. But every pressure cooker is a little different, and you might have better luck with yours.
The jury is still out on unicorns and affordable airfare. But easy-to-peel eggs? At least they are real.

How To Peel Eggs
One of the major quandaries when troubleshooting this recipe was how to easily peel a hard-boiled egg once its cooked.
3 Tips for Easy-to-Peel Hard-Boiled Eggs:
- Ice Bath: An ice bathimmediately after you finish cooking the eggs is crucial and ice them for at least 5 minutes! The longer you ice them the easier they are to peel.
- Rolling it Out: Hitting the rounded bottom of the egg and then vigorously rolling the egg resulted in an egg that was easier to peel.
- Running under Cold Water: If your eggs are still being a bit tricky, run them under cold water while peeling. Make sure the water runs between the egg white and the membrane so it helps to separate the two.
Some say old eggs are easier to peel. If you happen to have some week or two-week-old eggs, go ahead and use those up.
If you dont, no problem! In my dozens of egg trials, I did not see a huge difference.

I’m doing it sometimes and it works great:
- In order to do so, just add 3 cups of water instead of 2 cups, and follow the same instructions.
- High pressure for 5 minutes, natural pressure release for 5 minutes, and 3 minutes in a bowl.
Usually, I’m making Instant Pot hard-boiled eggs with the basic metal trivet that comes with the Instant Pot.

First Timers Do A Test
- Some people get different results using this method, so I suggest do a test first, before cooking a large batch of boiled eggs.
- Take 2 eggs, put 1 cup of water in the pot , then the trivet/metal rack that came with the pot, and set the eggs on it.
- Then follow the directions in the recipe. When done, peel and cut open the eggs and see what your results are.
- You may need to add or subtract a minute of cook time, depending on your results.
I have seen people get great results with the 5-5-5 method, and some people get over or under cooked eggs with that method.
Some people use the 2-8-5, and get better results than the 5-5-5. Some people use 4-4-4, or 6-6-6. I have even heard of people using a 8-0-5 method. Thats why you will need to test and see what you end up with. Sorry its so confusing!
How To Cooks Eggs In The Instant Pot
I based my eggs on the popular “5-5-5” method for hard-cooked eggs in the Instant Pot. The idea is to put your eggs into a steamer basket and seal them inside your pressure cooker along with a cup or so of water. It takes about five minutes for the cooker to come up to high pressure, five minutes to cook the eggs, and then five minutes of natural pressure release before removing the eggs from the cookerhence the “5-5-5” method.
I found that this basic formula worked just fine, though it typically takes my pressure cooker closer to 10 minutes before fully pressurizing.
I also decided that I like the texture of 4-minute eggs better than 5-minute eggs. At four minutes, the whites are firm but soft and the yolk is cooked through but still creamy at five minutes, I felt like the whites started to become rubbery and the yolk was a little chalky. Give it a try both ways and see which you prefer.

Cook Time Variations For Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
This recipes uses the 5-5-5 method for cooking hard boiled eggs. But since everyone likes their eggs, more importantly, the yolks cooked a certain way, here are a few cook time variations. You can use these to customize the way you like your boiled eggs.
- 3 minutes: Soft and slightly wet yolks with fully set whites
- 4 minutes: Cooked creamy yolks with medium firm whites
- 6 minutes: Fully set yolks with firm whites
Meal Prep Tip: If making eggs for meal prep to use throughout the week, I recommend undercooking them by a minute than your preferred time.
Why The Pressure Cooker Works
I’ve actually been sitting on this revelation for a few months now, just because I didn’t trust the evidence I saw with my own eyes: Two eggs or a dozen, fresh eggs or weeks old, white eggs or brown eggs, it didn’t matter. The shells slipped easily off each time, leaving a smooth and pristine hard boiled egg.
There are a few theories for why this is. Some say that, similar to steaming eggs, the pressure cooker forces steam inside the egg’s shell during cooking, causing it to separate from the egg white. Alton Brown’s theory is that it’s more about the rapid temperature change inside the sealed pot.
Whatever the reason, it works! Making hard-cooked eggs in the pressure cooker is the only method I’ve found that has worked for me every single time.

Important Tips For Using Instant Pot At Higher Altitudes
- If making Instant Pot Yogurt, you do not need to make adjustments to the recipe.
- If you are sauteing or thickening a recipe AFTER pressure cook time has elapsed, like in Instant Pot Beef Stew, be sure to watch liquid level carefully, you may need to add in ¼ to ½ cup more liquid, as it will take longer for your recipe to thicken at higher altitude.

Always Use Fast Release
Always use fast release immediately after the eggs are done cooking under pressure. If you leave the eggs in the pot, they will continue to cook in the residual heat and your eggs will be overcooked.
To safely release the pressure, use a long spatula or a pair of tongs to move the valve to the release side. Do make sure your hand is not over the valve while doing this.

What Ingredients Do I Need
The ingredient list is pretty simple when it comes to hard boiling eggs:
Pro Tip: To avoid cracked eggs, always start with room temperature eggs. It reduces the shock to the egg and your chance of having a crack after cooking. So set them out on the counter for about 30 minutes before you start your cooking.
How To Make Instant Pot Chicken Breast
- Place chicken breasts in the inner pot of the instant pot and season with salt and pepper.
- Add in 1 cup pineapple juice or chicken stock and season with minced garlic or garlic powder.
- Place lid on instant pot and be sure vent knob is pointed towards sealed.
- Set pressure cooker to the cooking time based on the size of chicken breasts. NOT how many chicken breasts you are cooking.
- Once the cooking time has elapsed, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes before doing a quick release of pressure. This is key to keeping your chicken breasts tender–don’t be tempted to do a quick release of pressure.
- Remove the chicken breasts from the liquid and let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving or shredding.

Covering Egg Bites Before Cooking
For cute and un-soggy egg bites, cover the mold with a parchment round or aluminum foil before cooking so condensation on the lid doesn’t drip down on the egg mixture. If your egg molds came with a plastic lid, they are for storage and cant be used for cooking. If the egg mold lid is silicone, you should be able to use it when cooking, but check the manufacturer’s instructions first.
Season To Your Tastes
Just like on the stove, you can cook rice in the pressure cooker with broth or water, use as much salt as you like, and add extra seasonings, a pat of butter, or a little olive oil for extra flavor.
What I Do: I sometimes sauté a little garlic in olive oil before adding my rice and broth, which turns a basic pot of grains into a flavorful side dish! You can also use seasonings such as turmeric and coriander for some Indian-inspired basmati rice, or chili powder for rice to tuck into burritos.
