What If My Rice Is Too Mushy

You most likely used too much water. 1:1 water to rice ratio is essential for all rice types.

Use the exact same container to measure both rice and water. Some cups are standard American , others are metric and the little plastic cup that comes with the Instant Pot is neither . So do not use different measuring cups to measure rice and water.

Setting Selection And Cook Time

How to Cook Long Grain White Rice in the Instant Pot

Use the manual button on the Instant Pot and set it to high pressure. This function provides the most control for any variety of white rice. I find that for long grain white rice, basmati, or jasmine, pressure cook for 3 minutes then natural-release for 10 minutes to yield separate, fluffy grains. If cooking short grain or medium grain white rice like sushi or calrose, use 1 1/4 cups water for 1 cup of rice. Pressure cook for 5 minutes and use the same natural-release time.

Smart Program Cooking Option

You can also choose to select the RICE smart program button. This program cooks on low pressure and is best used for white rice. For rice with a firmer texture or thinner rice like Jasmine or Basmati, use the Less mode for rice with a normal texture or regular long-grain or medium-grain white rice, use the Normal mode for rice with a softer texture, use the More mode. You can change the modes by pressing the RICE button again. Use quick release at the end.

Natural Release Or Slow

Slow-release is the process of letting your instant pot release the accumulated pressure on its own. This may take a few minutes but ensures that your food is cooked thoroughly. It takes a little patience to curb the desire to pull the control knob, but if you choose to slow-release, you will get soft, properly boiled food. Whenever you are cooking beans, legumes or meat, opt for this method to get better results.

Can I Double Or Triple This Recipe

Of course! The good thing is, doubling an Instant Pot recipe is easy. If you double the rice, make sure that you double the amount of water and vice versa.

If you increase the amount of rice/water in your Instant Pot, make sure not to cross the No-Fill line. This could create an overflow or a disaster!

However, if you increase the amount of rice in the Instant Pot, you shouldnt need to increase your cooking time at all. No matter what, cook your rice for the same amount of time.

The pressure building function may take a little longer to process with more rice/water in the pressure cooker. However, the specific cook time will stay the same.

What Is A Natural Pressure Release

How to make Long Grain Brown Rice in your Instant Pot

Natural pressure release occurs when the pressure release switch is left in the sealed position after the cooking process. This process will take time. Once the steam is released, the float valve will drop unlocking the lid.

In the case of natural pressure release, you can neither see steam escaping the valves, nor hear a beep to signal the opening of the lid.

The dropping of the float valve is the only indication and It might make a feeble sound that is audible If you are close by. A natural pressure release takes about 5-30 minutes depending upon the contents and the amount of water in the pot.

Natural Release For 10 Minutes And Then Release The Pressure

Because we do not want mushy texture for rice, we must release the pressure from the Instant Pot after 10 minutes. The rice is still being cooked during this natural release stage, but 10 minutes is plenty of time for the rice to finish cooking. After 10 minutes, there is not much pressure left, so you dont need to worry about releasing the pressure.
