How To Prepare Homemade Food For Dogs

When preparing a diet at home for your dog, it is essential that you follow a recipe that is complete and balanced. Once you and your vet have chosen an appropriate recipe, it’s time to get started.

  • Before you begin, it’s best if you have ready a food scale, food processor, pots and pans, and containers or bags for portioning the food.
  • Purchase fresh, high-quality ingredients that are not canned, seasoned, or heavily processed.
  • Set yourself up in a clean area of the kitchen that is free of foods that may be harmful to your dog.
  • Measure out the ingredients. Use a food scale if possible for accuracy.
  • Cook ingredients as directed on the recipe
  • Mix food and supplements together well .
  • Place food in containers and store in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • In general, refrigerated food will stay fresh for three to four days. Frozen dog food is best within about two months. Avoid feeding homemade dog food that has been in the freezer for more than six months.
  • Many owners choose to prepare food in bulk and refrigerate or freeze it in pre-portioned containers. This is a great idea to save time and money, but you might want to begin by making smaller quantities so you can see how your dog does on the diet.

NOTE: Xylitol is an all-natural alcohol sweetener that may be present in all-natural peanut butter.

ALWAYS read your ingredients and be familiar with them, especially if you plan to use them in your dogs recipes.

Xylitol can be deadly to your dog.

Never give any ingredient that contains Xylitol to your dog.

Just because it says all-natural doesnt mean its safe!

Read the Peanut Butter label to ensure that there is NO xylitol.

Instant Pot dog food | chicken & brown rice delight

Ok so this recipe isnt technically for dogs, but with some tweaks and adjustments, it can be.

The biggest thing is to leave out all the fancy seasonings and extras. The seasoning is not good for your dog and the onion and garlic can be dangerous.

This is usually in large quantities but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Celery is ok in limited amounts but for an added layer of safety I would leave those out as well.

Once you have cooked the turkey it can be given by itself as a snack or shredded and mixed into brown/white rice.

Be creative but also be sure to not give your dog anything he cant have. See list below.

This Homemade Instant Pot Dog Food recipe is easy to make with ground turkey, chicken or ground beef, rice and vegetables in the pressure cooker. You can easily customize this basic homemade dog food recipe to suit your dog’s tastes!

We have been making our own dog food for a long time. My Instant Pot dog food recipe is super easy, and our two fur babies absolutely love it!

We have always used high quality kibble, but one picky eater started turning her nose up at her usual food. So, I started adding cooked chicken breasts to supplement the kibble.

Our other dog developed food allergies, and it was getting harder to find a commercial dog food with minimal ingredients to suit his needs.

With our vet’s approval, I started making homemade food using ground turkey as the base. We also add rice and vegetables.

It’s best to always introduce new food gradually. I started giving the dogs a little bit of the homemade food. Gradually, we increased the amount and reduced the amount of dry food.

Note, that you can use this Instant Pot recipe as a supplement to your dog’s food as is. You will have to add vitamins, calcium and other necessary nutrients to ensure your dog is getting the nutrition he needs in lieu of using commercial dog food.

As always, speak with your veterinarian before changing your dog’s food.

Eggshells are safe for your dog to eat and digest. However, always make sure the eggs are clean before adding them to the Instant Pot.

Instant Pot Bone Broth For Dogs

How to Make Easy Homemade Dog Food in an Instant Pot

Bone broth is the latest trend that puppy parents are raving about.

While it has been around for a very long time, many are only now truly realizing its many benefits.

Typically made from beef bones and pigs feet, it provides an abundance of nutrients like iron, protein, collagen, gelatin, healthy fats, amino acids, and minerals.

This is one trend I can definitely get on board with, and I think my dogs will too.

    • grapes
  • Press the Saute button on the Instant Pot.
  • Add the ground meat and break it up and the liver, if using.
  • Cook the meat and liver until they are about half-way browned. You don’t want them to brown completely because you still have to cook the rice and veggies in the Instant Pot, and the meat will burn if fully cooked.
  • Once the meat and liver are half-way browned, add the soaked rice and water, according to the directions in this post.
  • Stir the meat, rice, and cooking water together.
  • Add the veggies on top, but do not mix in.
  • Place the lid on the Instant Pot, making sure it is locked and the vent is sealed.
  • Change the setting to Manual and adjust the time to 12 minutes.
  • When the Instant Pot beeps, carefully turn the vent to release the pressure. You may want to place a towel over the steam to protect yourself and your kitchen from any sputtering steam.
  • Open the Instant Pot and add the fruit and the coconut oil.
  • Stir everything together, mixing completely.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freezer for up to 3 months.
  • How To Transition To Homemade Dog Food

If your dog has spent their entire life eating kibble, make this transition slowly as they could end up with diarrhea. For dogs that eat a lot of table scraps, you could get away with replacing about ¼ of their food with this food for 3 – 4 days, then switch to half and half for 3 – 4 days, then ¾ new food + ¼ old food for 3 – 4 days, then 100% new food!

If your dog is really sensitive, I would do a week to two weeks at each stage. Melly has no problem with these transitions because I constantly add weird new things to her homemade food, but if your dog has eaten the same kibble their entire life, you should go slowly.

First, set your Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add coconut oil and the ground turkey. Break up the turkey as it cooks, using a spatula or wooden spoon.

When the turkey is cooked, turn the pot off. If there are any brown bits at the bottom of the pot, deglaze it with some of the water.

Next, add your rinsed rice, and the remaining water. You can pat the rice down with the spatula to make sure it’s covered by the water.

Then, add the carrots and green beans on top of the rice. Don’t stir everything together.

How Much Should I Feed My Dog

I recommend discussing the amount to feed your dog with your vet, as they can help determine based on your dogs size and weight.

Roxy and Rico are both right around 50 pounds so I give them a ½ cup of their dry dog food and ½ cup of homemade dog food. It helps Rico eat a little faster, and helps Roxy stay a little slimmer.

Transition your dogs food slowly over the course of a week or two so you avoid any potential stomach issues.

    Good Nutrition Comes First

Any change to your dog‘s diet is not to be taken lightly. Before making any major alterations, consult your veterinarian to confirm your dog’s dietary requirements. These mainly depend on the age and size of your pooch, but there may be other factors, such as medical conditions.

    Gather together what you’ll need.

What To Watch For When Feeding Homemade Dog Food

It’s important to monitor your dog closely when changing to homemade dog food. Stay in contact with your veterinarian regarding any changes you notice, whether good or bad. For best results, keep a record of your dog’s weight and body condition over time. Weigh your dog at least once per week and contact your vet if you notice unintended weight loss or gain. Watch for vomiting or diarrhea that may occur if your dog is sensitive to one or more ingredients. Note and report these or any other signs of illness to your veterinarian.

Homemade Dog Food In The Instant Pot

Place chicken breasts in Instant Pot with 1 cup low sodium chicken broth. Press Manual button to 6 minutes, and let natural release. If you dont have an Instant Pot, this can be done in a Crock-Pot or oven, or on the stovetop.

Shred up the chicken, either with forks, or I use my trusty KitchenAid mixer. I just put the paddle attachment on and let it do the work for me! Set aside the chicken.

Cut the sweet potato. I cut it in half and cooked it in the Instant Pot for 15 minutes, then let cool. Dice up or mash the sweet potato into small bites. Add 1 cup rice to the chicken broth still in the Instant Pot.

You can also get creative here and add flaxseed or sorghum grain. Flaxseed is great source of fiber and boosts cardiovascular health. Its also been shown to have benefits against cancer!

Sorghum is gluten-free, so if your pup has gluten allergies, this could be a great option! Heres a terrific article from Animal Bliss explaining the benefits: Are Sorghum and Flaxseed Good for My Dog? I added one tablespoon of each with the rice.

Pour in the bags of spinach and frozen peas & carrots. If you want, you can substitute/add broccoli, brussel sprouts, okra, or green beans just adjust the water levels as needed.

Stir and add another cup of water, then cook it all on manual for 10 minutes. Let natural release, and then mix in the shredded chicken.
