As Kelli said in her review of the Instant Pot, its best to really sit down and read the manual before digging in.

Why Cook Pasta In The Instant Pot

There are three reasons to cook pasta in the Instant Pot / pressure cooker.

  • Its a true one pot dish. No need to strain the pasta after its done because the pasta will absorb all of the water as it cooks.
  • Set it and forget it. Theres no need to keep an eye on the pot to make sure it doesnt boil over. Just turn the machine on and walk away.
  • Keep the starch Since the pasta isnt strained, all of the natural starch from the pasta stays in the pot and serves as a natural thickener for any type of sauce you add whether its marinara sauce or creamy cheesy sauce .
  • Why Electric Pressure Cookers Are Not Safe For Canning

The problem with electric pressure cookers is that you have no way of knowing what pressure youre actually cooking at. That means you dont actually know what temperature your jars are actually coming to.

Even if it has a digital readout that tells you what the pressure is, theres no real way to test it for accuracy.

    Shaping The Instant Pot Bread

Now, this is very crucial. I made two types of bread in terms of shape one as a boule and the other as separate rolls. Although both baked well, the rolls were better. Baking the whole boule takes longer and sometimes can remain undone from the center, and then, you have to put it back in the instant pot.

Though, that should not happen if you follow this instant pot bread recipe as such.

Still, I like to shape my instant bread as separate rolls. If you are a first-timer, I suggest you do the same.

So, I divide the dough into seven equal parts. Then, I roll each ball into a roll by smoothing the surface and tucking the edges underneath.

Can You Cook In A Pressure Canner

    An All American Pressure Canner

    The answer is: Yes, sometimes.

It really depends upon the food you want to cook and the brand/size of pressure canner you have.

  • First, you must check the manual of your particular brand and model size to verify it is okay to pressure COOK in your canner. Some brands vary as I describe below.
  • You should avoid cooking things that bubble up or foam because they can potentially clog and block the steam vent of the canner. A blocked vent would cause the pressure to build in the canner which would be dangerous.
  • There are two main brands of pressure canners here in the United States: All American and Presto. And there are different sizes/models of each.

Note: To make things just a little more confusing, Presto also makes cookers and they call their canner a canner/cooker.

The All American Pressure Canning manual states that you should NEVER cook the following foods in the canner: rice, applesauce, beans, cranberries, rhubarb or spaghetti plus any other food you think might foam up.

However, the Presto Pressure Canning manual states that you CAN cook these items IF you only fill the canner half way so that the food can not foam up to the lid.

So to cook in your pressure canner, you must find or look up the manual for your brand and model and verify its use.

How To Clean An Instant Pot

There are few things necessary for cleaning the dishwasher which is provided below

    • Hot water containing soap
    • White vinegar

Steps required to clean the dishwasher are given below:

    • Unplug the instant pot. If you were using the instant pot before unplugging it, it is better to wait for the pot to cool down. Remove the inner stainless steel pot, lid, and steam rack from the outside area of the cooker.

You can also check whether the cord is working properly and analyze any damages to the instant pot during this step.

    • The base of the pot contains electronic elements so avoid placing this area in water. Clean the instant spot using a dry cloth or dish towel.

If you wish to clean the inside of the pot, clean it as well but if you are using a wet cloth, dry the insides immediately after cleaning.

    • The recessed area of the pot can be cleaned using a toothbrush. A toothbrush can also be used to remove any stains present on the pot.
    • The inner bowl, as well as the steam rack of the pot, needs to be washed by hands in hot water containing soap. This will help in removing hard stains.
    • If you observe any discoloration in the instant pot, you can use white vinegar to remove it.

For this purpose, pour a cup of white vinegar into a stainless steel bowl and let it rest for few minutes. Pour this solution into the area containing discoloration and wash it with soapy water.

The sealing ring can be removed by peeling the ring from the backside of the sealing ring rack.

    Different Models Of Instant Pot

11 things you should never cook in an Instant Pot

When it was first launched, there was just one classic model called Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1. It came with an outer pot with button controls and a display screen on the front, the 6-quart stainless steel inner pot and the special lid with steam release handle and the pressure valve.

In the last few years, the Instant Pot company has released multiple new versions and sizes. We have Duo Plus, Nova, Viva, Ultra, and Max to name a few and most of them come in 3 popular sizes 6-quart , 3-quart and 8-quart . There is even a 10-quart version for extra-large batches of cooking. You can see the full range of Instant Pot multicookers on the official website here.

Each new model came with more functions and buttons, more sophisticated display screens and finer adjustment possibilities. The makers have also made some improvements to the lid, so the steam-release handle changed to a simple knob button on later versions.

However, as confusing as all these new models may seem, they all do exactly the same thing cook food under pressure in a controlled, safe environment. In our opinion, the newer models like Ultra and Max seem much more intimidating and overwhelming with bright digits and hi-fi buttons, so we prefer to stick with the classic models. All our website recipes are cooked in a 6-quart Instant Pot Duo or Instant Pot Duo Nova.

How To Boil Water In Instant Pot

If you think you can not boil liquids in an instant pot, you may be undermining the capabilities of an instant pot. There are many presets on the instant pot, and if you utilize them properly, you might as well be able to use them for boiling water. Here is a step by step guide that you need to follow when boiling water in an instant pot

  • Pour water in the instant pot. It should be poured in the inner cup.
  • Now seal the instant pot properly by placing a lid on top of the valve.
  • Now it is time to adjust the pressure settings. You need high pressure for this! Set the pressure settings at high and set the timer for about 5 minutes. It may take you a minute more or less depending on the quantity of water
  • The pot will start to maintain a high pressure, once it reaches that. The timer will start counting from 5 to 0.
  • Roughly after 3-4 minutes, the cooker will beep, which means that the water inside has boiled and it will automatically switch to the keep warm function.
  • You can turn off the pot now if you wish. Or you can just let it sit for some time to ensure proper boiling. I would recommend that you let it sit for some time.
  • When you open your pot, be sure to do it cautiously as it will release the extra pressure that is generated while boiling the water.
  • Foods That Can Be Pressure Cooked

Pot in Pot Cooking 101 || Instant Pot

It is important to know what foods can be pressure cooked and those that cannot. For example, most fruits cannot be pressure cooked because the heat is simply too intense, and the fruit will break apart. Fruit needs to be canned using a gentle method like the water bath method, which would boil the fruit.

Remember that high-acid foods do not have to be pressure cooked they can simply be water bathed, while low-acid foods need to be either pressure cooked to fully sanitize them of bacteria or brought to a high acid state with the addition of high acid foods or vinegar.

    Our Method Of Cooking Pasta

Our method for cooking any type of pasta in the Instant Pot is a bit different, and well explain how we came to it below. But first, here is our basic method:

  • Add dried pasta and water to nearly cover the pasta. A few pieces of pasta sticking above the water line is ok. You dont want to cook it in too much water because that lengthens the time it takes to heat and that can become a problem during the pressure release .
  • Set the Instant Pot to the cooking time of 0 minutes, and yes this is an actual cooking time and not a typo!
  • Once it comes up to pressure and hits 0 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 3 minutes. This reads as L 00:03 on the Instant Pot.
  • Then release the remaining pressure manually.
  • So whats the science behind this? Its simple: the pasta is already cooking during the time it takes to come up to the pressure, and the pasta continues to cook when the pressure cooker clicks off. The reason we do it this way is to minimize the Instant Pot from boiling over with starch. This looks like starch spewing out of the pressure release knob.
