You Can Make Applesauce

The BEST Instant Pot Accessories and 3 Recipes Using Them!

Before you dismiss this idea for the cloyingly sweet muck that is passed off as applesauce in many grocery stores these days, know the beauty of making your own applesauce in an Instant Pot is that you get to control the sweetness. Indeed, you also get to control the spices and the texture. Basically, you can make applesauce just how you like it, as thin or as lumpy as you like with as much or as little cinnamon as you can stand.

How to do it: When picking out apples for sauce, select the ones youd normally avoid for apple pie because of their tendency to fall apart under heat and pressure. Those are precisely the apples you want for this recipe. Fuji and Golden Delicious come to mind.

Then, core the apples and slice them in two-inch wedges. You can remove the peel before you slice the apple if you want, but the skin is a great source of nutrients and fiber. Plus, you can pulverize it with a blender later.

Add the apples, one cup of water, and your spices of choice . Dont forget a sprinkle of salt. Stir to coat the apples, then put the lid on the Instant Pot and set to seal.

Next, set the pressure cooker to cook on High with a timer of five to seven minutes. After the timer goes off, let the pressure release naturally. Remove the lid, and then use an immersion blender to turn the lumpy apple mixture into silky, delicious apple sauce. Store the apple sauce in mason jars for up to 10 days in your fridge.

Heres How You Do That Successfully:

  • Place a freezer bag inside the dish you want to cook in. We highly recommend using an oven safe pan or dish, not glass.
  • Fold the sides of that freezer bag over the edges of that dish.
  • Put your meal and food contents inside the freezer bag, so the freezer bag sits full inside your dish. Seal the filled freezer bag.
  • Place the dish with the sealed, full freezer bag into the freezer so that the meal freezes in the shape of your pan/bowl.
  • Once frozen solid, remove the freezer bag from your dish. Place your meal back into your freezer and your dish back into storage!
  • When ready to serve, locate the dish you originally froze your meal in, and place the frozen meal back inside of that pan or bowl.
  • How Do You Know If Your Bowl Is Safe For Use With A Pressure Cooker

Instant Pot Korean Beef Bowls Recipe

There are a few ways that you will know if your bowl is safe for pressure cooker use.

  • The first way is to read the instruction manual that came with your pressure cooker. If it does not recommend using any glass bowl, you will want to avoid doing so.
  • Please look for any markings on your bowl that indicate whether it is TG or annealed glass.
  • Check for any markings that indicate whether or not the bowl is oven-safe.
  • Check the side of your pressure cooker for any words that indicate whether or not it is safe to use with tempered and toughened glasses. If you doubt, contact the manufacturer of your pot/glass bowl combo before using them together for fear of breakage from heat expansion.
  • Check the bowl and ensure that there are no cracks or chips on it. Even if TG is used, it stands a far great chance of breaking if the bowl is chipped or cracked.

What To Beware Of With Glass Bowls

You can use a glass bowl in the pressure cooker, but dont put light glass utensils in with it. Sometimes, people have forgotten this, which led to the glass shattering.

Also, never put plastic in the pressure cooker because it will melt. Even with tempered glass, you still have a risk that the glass will shatter. They do break from time to time without warning. For someone who doesnt want to take that risk, you can use metal bowls as well.

Other things to beware of with glass bowls include:

    • Allow the bowl to cool before immersing in water
    • Dont place the glass bowl on cold or wet surfaces
    • Place on a towel or cooling rack to avoid the glass shattering
    • Dont bump, scratch or poke it with utensils

Beware of rapid temperature changes with a glass bowl because this can cause the bowl to shatter. The pressure inside the pressure cooker wont pose a problem, but the glass will still have a vulnerability to thermal shock.

Instant Pot As A Slow Cooker

I set the Instant Pot to the slow cooker option. It was early in the day when I started this chili so I knew I had several hours until we would have a bowl of chili for dinner.

The timer automatically went to six hours so I left it at that. Our dinner time is usually 5:30-6 each evening so it would work out perfectly.

If you dont have time for the slow cooker option to cook the chili, set it to pressure cook for about 10-15 minutes.

Be sure to set the knob on the top to venting if you are using the slow cooker option. The sealing option is for pressure cooking.

    Instant Pot Dr Pepper Chicken

I was shocked at how yummy this chicken and sauce were! I am not a fan of sweet meat but this wasnt over the top sweet. It had really good flavor and there was no leftovers!

    • Try serving this chicken on buns or rolls like a sandwich. Add a slice of cheese and melt under the ovens broiler. For a bonus add a couple slices of crispy bacon.
    • You can also serve the chicken pieces whole instead of shredding. Its a personal preference.
    • Sweet Baby Rays is my favorite BBQ sauce. If you have a different favorite try using that.
    • For a lower sugar version of this recipe use a low sugar BBQ sauce and Diet Dr. Pepper.
    • I used boneless, skinless chicken thighs because they turn out more moist and tender in the Instant Pot and slow cooker. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Use the same times listed in the recipe below or for a more accurate cooking time use the chicken breast formula. Chicken thighs shrink down a lot whereas breasts dont as much. So you may want to use only 2 pounds of meat if using chicken breasts.
    • Frozen chicken pieces also work with this recipe. I used frozen thighs and they worked well. I like buying frozen boneless, skinless thighs in the big bags at Costco for around $2 a pound.
    • The sauce is so tasty you may want to experiment using it with other types of meat like shredded beef or pulled pork.
    • I havent tried this with other types of cola like Coke or Pepsi but Im assuming it would work. It will have a slightly different taste profile.

    What Exactly Is Pot

You may have heard of the term pot-in-pot cooking as it is a term regularly used in many Instant Pot Recipes.

Pot-in-Pot refers to cooking two different dishes simultaneously by placing one of them on a trivet or steamer basket inside another pot filled with water.

A pressure cooker is perfect for this technique because it can cook food faster and evenly than other cooking methods such as boiling, oven baking, grilling, etc.

When you are cooking a dish, it can be hard to know what type of cooking method you should use, pot-in-pot or right inside the inner pot. I have found the following dishes to be best suited to PIP cooking in the Instant Pot.

    • Recipes that dont need liquid. Like meatloaf and Lasagna.
    • Recipes that do not use a full 1 or 1.5 cups of thin liquid will not work with an electric pressure cooker because you need that amount of liquid to reach the required level of pressure for these appliances.
    • A recipe with a thick sauce or gravy
    • Water bath or bain-marie recipes like cheesecake or creme brulee.
    • To steam vegetables or delicate foods.
    • To cook two dishes simultaneously.
    • A recipe containing dairy.
    • To reheat a meal.

    Pop Plenty Of Popcorn

If you dont have a large saucepan or tall pot, you can use your Instant Pot as your go-to popcorn popper. Its actually so simple you may soon bid farewell to anything that comes in a microwavable bag.

How to do it: Turn your Instant Pot to the Saute feature, selecting More to get the pan a bit hotter. When the surface of the pot is hot, add an oil of your choice . When it begins to sizzle, pour in popcorn kernels. Cover with a lid. Listen for the popcorn to pop, and turn off when about two-thirds of the kernels are popped so you can prevent scorched kernels. Before serving, sprinkle with your preferred seasoning, and gently toss.

Are Glass Bowls Suitable For Using In A Pressure Cooker

A common myth about cooking with glass bowls or containers is that they will shatter when heated. This isnt always true.

Tempered glass is much stronger than regular glass and can withstand high temperatures without breaking.

However, not all tempered glass is made to handle certain types of heat like microwaves, pressure cookers, or stovetops.

Tempered microwave-proof bowls will have a label on them that says they are suitable for use in a microwave.

Make sure to read the label carefully before you buy, and choose a bowl that is made for microwaving.

Stove-safe bowls will say oven-safe. Most tempered glassware is oven-proof, but not all are stovetop, microwave, or dishwasher safe.

This means you should only use bowls labeled oven-proof in a pressure cooker for the safest results.

Oven-safe glass is our last pot in pot container choice.

    There are a few things to look out for when using Pyrex Glass Container or Corelle Bowl for the pot in pot method.;

    1. You must follow all the safety precautions from Pyrex. Such as avoid sudden temperature changes.

    2. Make sure there are no fine scratches, chips, cracks on the oven-safe glass bowl. Because theres a rare chance that they may break or shatter.

    3. Dont place the hot glass bowl on a wet or cool surface, nor handle it with a wet towel or potholder. Before washing, refrigerating, or freezing the hot glass bowl, allow it to cool on a cooling rack or dry surface.

    4. Depending on what you cook, you may need to increase the cooking time by a few minutes due to the glass bowls slower heat transfer rate.
