Tips For Sterilizing Jars

How to Sterilize in Your Instant Pot

Even though the sterilization process seems to be quite simple, there are some tips that you should know if you want to optimize the effect. Who else doesnt want to work less with higher results, right? Here is the list of tips for you, based on our experience:

  • Wash your jars beforehand: Before putting the jars into the instant pot , wash them under fresh soapy water beforehand. Then, dry the jars with a big clean towel. This step works well on removing dirt and partly getting rid of bacteria, not thoroughly but about 20 to 30 percent. So, you can shorten the sterilization later.
  • If you dont have a big enough pressurized cooker, use a slow cooker instead.
  • Never let the jar touch the bottom of the pot: At the bottom of the pressurized cooker, there are waterproof, metal electrical cords that provide heat to the instant pot. Hence, we have to remind you not to touch these cords by putting the jar on a steaming rack.
  • Its unnecessary to sterilize the lids over jars or any part that doesnt directly interact with the jam later.
  • After sterilizing the jar, immediately pour jam into these jars in less than an hour. The longer you wait, the more bacteria and germs multiply back on the jar, and jars arent sterile anymore, so you have to repeat the boil cycle.

Safety First When You Use Your Pressure Cooker

At home, the only reason I would autoclave something is if I wanted to culture pure yeast from an unfiltered beer and needed to sterilize culture medium, equipment, and wort for yeast starter cultures, etc. . For my home autoclave purposes I use laboratory-grade Pyrex and stainless-steel materials only. Sometimes I will wrap utensils or the open tops of glassware in aluminum foil, as aluminum foil is also autoclavable and really handy for autoclaving purposes both at home and in the lab. Mason jars can also be used in much the same way they are used for pressure canning. Just know that you should NEVER screw down the lid of any jar inside of an autoclave or pressure cooker. If you autoclave regular glass you also run the risk of having said glass explode . This is also a reason why I wont use Pyrex bakeware that isnt laboratory grade. Pyrex bakeware is made of cheaper soma-lime glass: cheaper for them to make but also more prone to shattering when heated and cooled rapidly. When you use mason jars or home-grade Pyrex just realize that this risk is there. I have never had a problem with this but I always cool my autoclave down extremely slowly.

    • White vinegar

Steps required to clean the dishwasher are given below:

    • Unplug the instant pot. If you were using the instant pot before unplugging it, it is better to wait for the pot to cool down. Remove the inner stainless steel pot, lid, and steam rack from the outside area of the cooker.

You can also check whether the cord is working properly and analyze any damages to the instant pot during this step.

    • The base of the pot contains electronic elements so avoid placing this area in water. Clean the instant spot using a dry cloth or dish towel.

If you wish to clean the inside of the pot, clean it as well but if you are using a wet cloth, dry the insides immediately after cleaning.

    • The recessed area of the pot can be cleaned using a toothbrush. A toothbrush can also be used to remove any stains present on the pot.
    • The inner bowl, as well as the steam rack of the pot, needs to be washed by hands in hot water containing soap. This will help in removing hard stains.
    • If you observe any discoloration in the instant pot, you can use white vinegar to remove it.

For this purpose, pour a cup of white vinegar into a stainless steel bowl and let it rest for few minutes. Pour this solution into the area containing discoloration and wash it with soapy water.

How Do I Prepare My Babys Bottles

Can You Use An Instant Pot for Canning?

Prepare your babyâs formula by mixing water and the appropriate amount of powdered infant formula. The packaging on the side of the formula container will tell you how much to use. Carefully follow the directions. You can use tepid tap water, as long as your local or state health departments have labeled it as safe to drink.

If youâre concerned about your water, you may sterilize it to kill germs. Hereâs how:

    • pour cold tap water into a teapot or saucepan
    • place pot on the stove over medium heat
    • bring water to a rolling boil, and let boil for about a minute
    • let the water cool until itâs at room temperature

Test to see if the water is cool enough for your baby to drink by shaking a few drops of water on the inside of your wrist. If it stings, itâs still too hot. Once water has cooled, donât let it sit longer than 30 minutes before adding it to the formula.

Once prepared, the formula is ready to feed to your baby immediately without additional refrigeration or warming. Formula thatâs been prepared should be consumed or stored in the refrigerator within 1 hour. If it has been at room temperature for more than 1 hour, throw it away. And if your baby doesnât drink all the formula in the bottle, throw away the unused portion do not save it for later.

    Clean Instant Pot Sealing Ring

Its best to rinse and dry the sealing ring while It is still in its position because frequent pulling out will deform its shape which will affect the pressure cooking. It can also be washed in the dishwasher.

The stinky smell of the sealing ring can be eliminated by soaking It in white vinegar. Your best bet is to have at least one spare ring and use one for savory and the other ring for sweet dishes.

Clean The Lid And Its Parts

This one perhaps is the most challenging part of learning how to clean an instant pot. However, if you do it right, youâll prevent food build-up and off-odours. Here are the things you need to do:

    • Remove the anti-block shield. Use your thumb to push and pop it off. This small nub covers the float valve from the inside. Once removed, wash it in warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry. Place the anti-block shield somewhere safe to avoid misplacing it.
    • Clean the silicone sealing ring. Make sure to inspect for warping or any damage after every use. This part is heat resistant, so it is dishwasher-safe. But you can also handwash it in soapy water.
    • Wash the lid. Depending on your electric pressure cooker model, some instant pot lids are top-rack dishwasher-safe. But if not, wash it in warm, soapy water. Dont forget to inspect the steam release valve after cleaning to ensure it is free from food particles.

    It Makes Homemade Baby Food

Store-bought baby food can contain added sugars and dyes, and they are way more expensive than buying the raw fruits and vegetables that are the only necessary ingredients. Of course, you can make your own baby food without an Instant Pot, but it takes way longer. Instead of roasting sweet potatoes, for instance, parents can steam them in a fraction of the time by simply throwing them in the Instant Pot with some water. Once cooked, all they need to do is mash or whip them up and voila: fresh, inexpensive baby food with minimal ingredients. While one of the main selling points of the Instant Pot is the reduced cooking time, there are other advantages, including easy cleaning. For many recipes, the inner pot is the only pan you’ll need to scrub down, making cleanup a breeze. Whether you use your Instant Pot electric pressure cooker every day or only occasionally, here’s what you need to know about keeping it clean and working properly.

  • Most parts of the Instant Pot can be washed in the dishwasher. The inner pot, sealing ring, and trivet are all dishwasher safe, and the lid is top-rack dishwasher safe. Use a clean, damp cloth to clean the outside of the Instant Pot base. Always unplug the Instant Pot before cleaning.

Do not wash the base. If it does happen to get wet, let it dry thoroughly before using.

    The Spruce / Diana Rattray

  • Clean the inner pot with warm, soapy water or wash it in the dishwasher. For stuck-on pieces of food, try scrubbing with baking soda or a non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner, such as Bar Keepers Friend. If the pot has some light staining or discoloration, wipe it down with some vinegar. Always dry parts thoroughly before returning to the Instant Pot. Store the pot with the lid upside-down.

    The Spruce / Diana Rattray

  • Periodically remove the steam release valve and check it for debris. Wash it with warm soapy water and rinse it thoroughly. When it’s dry, place it back on the lid.
