Perfect Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs Recipe Make perfect hard boiled eggs that are easier to peel every time.

Perfectly cooked hard boiled eggs are an essential item at my house! We love to just grab one for breakfast in the mornings, top our salads with with one for lunch or supper, and you cant imagine a get together without having deviled eggs!

There are so many ways to cook hard boiled eggs, but when I need them in a hurry, I turn to this pressure cooker method using my Instant Pot.

Safety Tips For Using An Instant Pot:

  • If you are new to the an instant pot or any pressure cooker, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading the owners manual BEFORE trying it out AND be sure to follow the use instructions for your specific model.
  • ALWAYS double check the pressure indicator before opening the lid.
  • When you release the pressure, VERY HOT STEAM can come out of the valve. Keep your face and other body parts away from the steam valve.
  • Use a wooden spoon to mash the pressure release nozzle so any steam coming out doesnt get you!
  • Use tongs or other heat appropriate utensils to remove things from the inside because they will be VERY hot and you do not want to get burned.

Tips For The Best Instant Pot Eggs:

    • Timings below are for large eggs. For medium eggs, reduce cook time by 1 minute and increase by 1 minute for extra large eggs.
    • Start with refrigerated eggs.
    • Its ok to stack eggs on the rack, but eggs should not touch the water or walls of the instant pot.
    • Transfer cooked eggs to a bowl of ice water right away to prevent overcooking.
    • We use a 6 Qt 7-in-1 Instant Pot Duo. You may need to experiment timings using a smaller or larger pressure cooker.

    Recommended Instant Pot Accessories

You may not have received an insert trivet if you have an Instant Pot model other than the IP-DUO60. If this is the case, I highly recommend this silicone steamer insert. In fact, Im going to pick one up even though I have the included insert, simply because I like that I can easily lift the eggs out and submerge them in the ice water bath all at once. Also, if youre looking for a set of silicone-tipped tongs, you cant go wrong with these.

Are you excited to make some hard boiled eggs in your Instant Pot? I cant wait to hear your thoughts after you try this recipe. If youre not an Instant Pot owner, I still stand by my old hard boiled eggs in oven method. But if you have one , this method is life changing!

    How To Peel Hard

A Dozen Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

After making your hard-boiled eggs in the Instant Pot, knowing just how to peel a hard-boiled egg will save you a lot of trouble. We recommend using a spoon to separate the egg from the shell, peeling the cracked hard-boiled egg with your hands under cold running water or shaking the hard-boiled egg in a mason jar with water .

    • As with all appliances, your Instant Pot cooking times may vary from my own. Test how many minutes to cook your eggs and adjust as necessary by 1 minute at a time.
    • This method of hard-boiling eggs works for large to extra large eggs.
    • You can cook as many eggs at a time as you like using this method as long as they are not overcrowded. Try using an egg steamer rack to cook more than 6 eggs at once. Cooking with a rack is the best way to ensure they all cook evenly.
    • Quick release the pressure as soon as the cooking time is up to ensure they do not become overcooked. Use a cloth or oven mitt to quick release.
    • Have your ice bath ready to transfer the eggs immediately from the Instant Pot so they stop cooking right away.
    • Peel the eggs as soon as you remove them from the ice bath dont let them sit. They are easier to peel fresh out of the ice bath.

How To Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

Heres what youll need to do to make hard boiled eggs in an Instant Pot:

Prepare. You can use any pressure cooker. I’m using the 6 quart Instant Pot. If you have a trivet, place it in the cooker and arrange the eggs on the trivet. Otherwise, stack the eggs in the cooker as securely as you can. Add the water to the Instant Pot, then prepare an ice bath in a separate bowl.

Cook. Secure the lid and set the pressure release knob to Sealing. Select Manual or Pressure Cook for 5 minutes on High pressure.

Release pressure. Allow the Instant Pot to sit undisturbed for a natural pressure release for 5 minutes, then turn the pressure release knob to Venting to release any remaining steam.

Cool the eggs. Transfer the hard boiled eggs to the ice bath for 5 minutes. If you don’t have ice , you can simply use cold tap water.

Dry and store. Transfer the chilled hard boiled eggs from the ice bath to a towel to dry the surface. Your eggs are ready to enjoy!

    Why The Pressure Cooker Works

I’ve actually been sitting on this revelation for a few months now, just because I didn’t trust the evidence I saw with my own eyes: Two eggs or a dozen, fresh eggs or weeks old, white eggs or brown eggs, it didn’t matter. The shells slipped easily off each time, leaving a smooth and pristine hard boiled egg.

There are a few theories for why this is. Some say that, similar to steaming eggs, the pressure cooker forces steam inside the egg’s shell during cooking, causing it to separate from the egg white. Alton Brown’s theory is that it’s more about the rapid temperature change inside the sealed pot.

Whatever the reason, it works! Making hard-cooked eggs in the pressure cooker is the only method I’ve found that has worked for me every single time.

How To Cook Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

Add water to the bowl of the Instant Pot.

Place the eggs in the water.

Put the lid on the Instant Pot and seal the vent.

Set to pressure cook on high for five minutes.

When the cook time is up, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release the pressure.

Remove lid from Instant Pot and transfer eggs to a bowl filled with ice water using tongs the eggs are HOT.

Allow eggs to cool in the ice bath for 5 minutes before peeling.

After going through all of the steps to boil eggs, its such a disappointment to find your cook time was a little off or the shell is sticking to the egg. But, you will never have that problem with Instant Pot hard-boiled eggs. The shells practically slide right off of the egg, and you can guarantee the yolks will always be cooked just how you like them.

  • Place trivet at the bottom of your Instant Pot. Add 1 cup of water to the pot, then gently rest eggs on top of the trivet. Lock the lid in place and cook on high pressure for 7 minutes. Just before 7 minutes are up, fill a medium bowl with ice water and keep it within reach of the Instant Pot.
  • Carefully quick-release the pressure using an oven mitt or washcloth. As soon as you remove the lid, take the eggs out and place them into the bowl of ice water. Let them sit in the ice water for at least 1 minute, up to 5 minutes.
  • After 1 minute, drain the water from the bowl and start to peel your eggs. To easily peel them, rub your thumbs along the shells to encourage them to loosen and peel. Carefully peel away the shell using the pads of your fingers, not your nails. The shells should fall away easily.

How To Use Your Instant Pot To Make Hard

The Instant Pot’s amazing versatility means you can use the multi-function appliance to steam, pressure cook, or slow cook your favorite foods and recipes. For hard-boiled eggs, the “pressure cook” function is the setting you’ll be using. Some Instant Pots even have a built-in “egg” pressure cook setting.

An Instant Pot is an easy way to make hard-boiled eggs by following Shumski’s simple “five-five-release” cooking formula. “Essentially, you cook them for five minutes, let them sit for five minutes, and then release the pressure,” he says.

  • Fill the Instant Pot with water. Use one cup of water for six eggs. Place the steaming rack in the inner pot.
  • Place the eggs directly on a steaming rack. Space them evenly or use a silicone insert. Close and lock the lid and set the valve to “Sealing.”
  • Set your Instant Pot. Choose the “Pressure Cook” option, select “High Pressure,” and set the timer to five minutes. Press start.
  • Let the eggs rest. After cooking has completed, wait five minutes. This will allow the pressure to come down naturally, which will prevent your eggs from overcooking.
  • Release the pressure. Use a wooden spoon to turn the pressure release valve to “Venting.” This will release the pressure. The round steam exhaust safety valve is positioned on the Instant Pot’s lid. Some valves have a “handle,” which aid in positioning.
  • Remove your eggs. Press “Cancel” and remove the Instant Pot lid.

    • After cook time has elapsed, let the pressure release naturally for 5 minutes
    • Once 5 minutes has elapsed, release any remaining pressure in Instant Pot by using a wooden spoon or kitchen towel to knock vent knob to vent position.
    • Carefully, remove eggs from the pressure cooker and place it in an ice bath. Eggs are VERY hot, so use potholder if your fingers aren’t made of steel!
    • After eggs have been in an ice bath for 5 minutes, remove eggs from the ice bath.
    • Peel and enjoy your PERFECT hard-boiled eggs.

After trying a few too many “foolproof” tricks with spotty results, I relegated easy-peel eggs to the same category as unicorns and cheap airfare: nice to fantasize about, but if they were truly real, you’d think we’d have heard about it by now.

But that’s the thing about mythsjust when you’ve thrown your hands in the air and walked away, something new comes along to rekindle your hope. Like Fox Mulder, we want to believe.
