Factors To Consider When Buying A Pressure Cooker

Pressure Cooker Deals – Instant Pot DUO Plus 9 in 1 Review

As a first time pressure cooker buyer, you may be unsure of what type of pressure cookers are available in the market. This article lists down the primary factors that you should consider when buying a pressure cooker.

Types of Pressure Cookers

Pressure cookers are generally classified into two categories based on their functions which are stove top and electric pressure cookers. Stovetop pressure cookers have recently become popular because they are cheaper compared to electric ones.

Size Considerations

Before choosing among different brands or models, it is important to know how many people eat at your house so that you can buy model with corresponding size. Generally speaking, 4 quart capacity is sufficient for family members whereas 2 quart is enough for one or two person household.

Pressure Cooker Material

Most high quality pressure cookers are either made of aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum pressure cooker may be lighter to carry around but there are possibilities that food particles may get stuck on the surface especially for rice and porridge. Stainless steel pressure cookers have better sealing properties because they have a smooth, flat base which cause less friction when cooking food. This leads to lesser accumulation of steam in the pot resulting in easier cleaning up after use.

And its also for those who dont really want to spend too much money on appliances, since you can buy this to replace up to 9 separate kitchen appliances. In fact, its cheaper than many comparable multi-cooker models.

Especially useful for larger families, and those that batch, and freezer cook.

What To Consider When Shopping For An Instant Pot

Control panel: All Instant Pots currently on the market have relatively large control panels. It makes sense, given how multi-functional these kitchen gadgets are. But while theyre all rather comprehensive, the more sophisticated models offer sleeker, more digital control panels, including features like a dial to click through varying cooking functions and added guidance like OK to open lid.

Cooking pot: Though all Instant Pots have a stainless-steel inner pot with a tri-ply bottom for sauteing, more advanced models have additional benefits. The Instant Pot Pro comes with an added layer of extra-thick 3.5mm aluminum for faster, more efficient heating, while the Instant Pot Pro Plus has an inner pot thats stovetop-safe and induction compatible.

Pressure levels: On some models, there is only one pressure option: high. On others, you can choose from high or low pressure levels. And still others, you can even choose a max pressure level. High is perfectly suitable for most recipes, while low is good for slower cooking or things that you want to make more tender over a longer period of time, like beef stew, as well as foods that are delicate like rice, fish and even cakes. Machines with the extra-high pressure level will yield the fastest results and also make a really good and concentrated bone broth.

The 9 in 1 model is a good buy instead of the IP-DUO60 since it comes with an improved control panel that comes with an easy to read LCD screen, a great program for boiling eggs and you can even make yogurt with its Yogurt program!

Another advantage of this model is that it comes with buttons for each smart program and also comes with buttons for adjusting the pressure level, delay start time and keep warm on/off . The plus/minus buttons are a definite plus and can be used to adjust the cooking time.

Unboxing The Instant Pot Duo Plus

The 6-quart model showed up in a compact box with a helpful handle on the top that made it easy to move around. Inside the box, the Instant Pot was kept safe by two cardboard inserts that can go straight into my recycling.

Aside from the main unit and lid, theres a removable stainless-steel inner pot, a steam rack, and a spare sealing ring. The user manual contains all the basic information needed to operate the Instant Pot. But theres very little help regarding cook times. For recipes, inspiration, and cooking tables, I had to head to the Instant Pot website. But theres also an Instant Pot app, as well as countless recipes online on food blogs Instant Pot has such a huge fan base that you can lose hours browsing through online recipe ideas.

It doesnt take up much space on my counter, so Ill be leaving it out for the next few weeks while I give it a try. But, its not the most stylish appliance so I probably wouldnt leave it on display permanently. Thankfully Its not too heavy or cumbersome to move around, so if you dont plan to leave it out on the counter, its easy to lift in and out of a cupboard between uses.

Slow Cooking Beef Bourguignon

Instant Pot DUO Plus 60, 6 Qt 9-in-1 Review

I followedthis recipe for beef bourguignon , sauteing in the Instant Pot. Frustratingly, some of the flour and meat stuck to the base of the pot, but this loosened off later in the cooking process. Then instead of pressure cooking , I switched it to slow cook on high for four hours. I left the pressure release switch in the vent position to allow excess steam out and help it thicken.

After popping out to run some errands I got home later than expected, thankfully the keep warm function kicked in and kept it warm for a further three hours. The finished stew had a nicely thickened beef gravy with soft meat and a rich flavor. By the time I got around to serving it, it was a pleasant 145°F and I was grateful that I hadnt needed to mess around reheating it, despite being delayed.

Instant Pot Duo Versus Duo Plus

Theres a pretty big difference in functions between the Instant Pot Duo and the Duo Plus. The Duo Plus has sous vide and sterilizer functions, and an additional two cooking programs. This alone may be enough to seal the deal for the Duo Plus. A handful of smaller features can also be found on the Duo Plus, such as quiet steam release, an anti-spin cooking pot design, and a cooking status bar on the LED display.

What We Like About The Instant Pot Duo Crisp

The Duo Crisp fundamentally works as both a pressure cooker and an air fryer, and its genuinely useful for making one-pot meals. It can pressure cook a whole chicken until tender and then brown the skin afterward, or heat up a small batch of frozen fries faster than an oven. And its better designed than the one other pressure cooker/air fryer weve tested, the Ninja Foodi .

After pressure cooking a whole chicken atop a bed of carrots and potatoes in the Duo Crisp, we were able to brown the exposed skin in seven minutes using the air-fryer lid on the Roast setting. Compared with chickens weve cooked in other air fryers, this chicken browned much more evenly, although it wasnt as deeply golden as chicken roasted in an oven or a convection toaster oven. The meat was succulent, while the vegetables underneath turned out tender and even caramelized in places, if a little overcooked. The result wasnt quite as good as traditional French chicken in a pot, which would be more flavorful after a longer cooking time and gentler reduction. But wed gladly eat this comforting one-pot meal again.

How We Test Instant Pots

When the experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab assess multi-cookers, including Instant Pots, we put each to the test in a variety of ways. We check overall functionality by filling the device with water to capacity, then activate the high setting and set a timer. We watch and listen once the cooker comes to pressure, we note the time. Then, we maintain pressure for 15 minutes and release the pressure, timing how long it takes for the pressure to drop. Next, our pros get cooking. We mix all of the ingredients for beef stew in the pressure cooker, cover, record how long the pot takes to come to pressure, cook for 20 minutes and record how long the pot takes to release pressure. Then, we evaluate the final product: Is the beef tender? How were the veggies cooked? Whats the overall flavor like? Finally, our pros cook a batch of rice in each device, combining all of the ingredients in the multicooker and cooking according to the manufacturer’s instructions. We then evaluate the rice: Whats the texture like? Is any rice stuck to the bottom of the cooker?

Our testers also consider ease of use, evaluating each product for how intuitive and clear the controls are, how many settings are offered, how simple cleaning is and the clarity of the owner’s manual.

The Best Instant Pot: Instant Pot Pro

Instant Pot Duo Plus 9

What we liked: This model pressurized the quickest and offered the best searing and sautéing experience, with a stable, non-spinning pot. The ability to use the stainless steel inner pot on an electric, induction, or ceramic stovetops was welcome, as it gives the user greater flexibility and control. Releasing the steam feels straightforward and safe because of its separate push-button release and the plastic cover around the steam valve. The control panel is easy to navigate with a mixture of buttons and a dial. We also liked the handles on its cooking pot, which made it easier to lift the pot up and out of the Instant Pot’s base.

What we didn’t like: Its pretty expensive, and while the sous vide function works, although it isn’t nearly as reliable as an immersion circulator.

The Instant Pot Duo Plus, a.k.a Instapot Duo Plus, Instant Duo Plus, Instant Pot 9-in-1, or simply the IP Duo Plus, has gone several upgrades since it was released almost a decade ago.

In fact, this model is already the third iteration featuring a more refined look and better control panel. It has more cooking functions than its predecessor, and sous vide is one of those.

Which One Is Better

Instant Pot vs. Air Fryer which one is better? Well, thats a tough question. Since the two devices do completely different things, its hard to compare the two. Ultimately, it comes down to what your daily cooking needs are!

If you love slow cooker foods and want big meals cooked in a quicker amount of time, then the Instant Pot may be right for you. If you find yourself heating up chicken nuggets in the oven, making fried food, or reheating foods often, then an air fryer may be more useful for you!

Straight To The Point

The best Instant Pot is the Instant Pot Pro. It performs well and has nice features like a steam release switch and handles on its cooking pot. Our budget-friendly pick is the Instant Pot Duo Plus 9-in-1.

Instant Pot has become synonymous with a type of electric appliance more correctly known as a “multi-cooker” . Similar to how Xerox has become the de facto term for copy machines, Instant Pot has become the most well-known electric multi-cooker, even though plenty of other companies make electric multi-cookers, too. While we don’t think Instant Pots should be considered in a vacuum , the fact of the matter is there are so many Instant Pot models that we think it’s worthwhile to sort through them. This review, then, is our look at everything Instant Pot offers to help you weigh those options, but it’s only part of the larger question of what kind of pressure or multi-cooker you should buy, which we answer in a separate review.

Design And Key Features

Instant Pot (Duo Plus 9 in 1) Unboxing and Review

The Duo Evo Plus is currently only available in the 5.7 litre capacity in the UK, although a 7.5 litre model is due to be added to the range in early 2021. In the US the Duo Evo Plus comes in 6 quart and 8 quart models. In Australia a 5.7 litre/ 6 quart capacity is available. As with the older Instant Pot size, we found 5.7 litres an ideal capacity for a family or batch cooking. The stainless steel exterior certainly looks smart in the kitchen, although with the black exterior for the lid, any food spattering or water marks are easy to spot.

One of the issues with Instants previous designs was the large amount of steam that would emit from the cooker after releasing the pressure valve. A new plastic diffuser covers the vent, meaning far less sputtering and a gentler emission of steam. The Duo Evo Plus also automatically seals when in place, something its older machines required the user to do manually.

While the screens at the centre of Instants electric cookers may look similar before switching on, the new Duo Evo Plus has received a raft of small improvements that make for a far easier cooking experience.

The LCD display is nicer to look at and use, with the digital interface and dial making it easier to choose from the Duo Evo Plus 48 cooking options. A progress timer makes it simpler to quickly check on the cooking progress of food, and even the screen itself has been slightly tilted upwards to make it a cinch to read at a glance when youre busy in the kitchen.
