Thats all it takes. Some recipes will call for added oil or salt in the Instant Pot, but you dont need those. If youd like to flavor your rice with seasonings, butter, ghee, or oil, do so after it comes out of the Instant Pot.

The Ratio For Water To Rice Is 1 To 1

The golden rule for the ratio for Japanese short-grain rice to water is 1 to 1.1 or 1.2. So if the rice is 180 ml , you will need 200 ml water.

However, when the rice is cooked in the Instant Pot, the steam does not escape from the pressure cooking. Therefore, the best ratio for the rice to water is one to one.

How Much Rice Can You Cook In An Instant Pot

The recipe below is for cooking 2 cups of rice, which will yield about 6 cups of cooked rice. The water to rice ratio and cook time stay the same regardless of the amount of rice you are cooking.

You can cook more rice as long as you dont exceed the maximum fill lines on your pot. Rice will expand as it cooks, so you have to account for this:

  • You can double this recipe to cook 4 cups of rice in a 6 quart Instant Pot, which will make about 12 cups of cooked rice.
  • If you have an 8 quart Instant Pot , you can triple this recipe to cook 6 cups rice. This will make about 18 cups of cooked rice.

How To Make Instant Pot Rice Recipe (Beef Plov Recipe)

Its a good rule of thumb to always rinse uncooked rice before you cook it. Place rice in a fine-mesh strainer and run it under the sink of running water. If you dont have a fine-mesh strainer, you can place rice in a bowl of water, swish it around, then drain and do this a few more times until the water is less cloudy. This step helps to remove debris and some of the starch that causes the rice to clump together. Rinsing also helps the rice absorb water faster.

Does Rice Have To Be Rinsed Before Cooking

Opinions vary widely and there seems to be no right or wrong answer. Its all up to personal preference. However, thankfully it is irrelevant for the cooking times presented.

Both rinsed and dry rice work with my cooking times and method. Nothing has to be adjusted or changed either way. Just make sure you drain your rice well if you rinse it. Then use 1:1 ratio.

Cook In High Pressure For 2 Minutes

After testing a few different variations, the best cooking time for short grain rice is 2 minutes on high pressure. Ive also tried using the Rice mode on the Instant Pot, which is set to 12 minutes on low pressure. As both manual and Rice mode takes 5 minutes to pressurize, Rice mode takes extra 10 minutes to cook.

How To Cook It

To make the rice, first measure out the rice using the scoop that comes with the Instant Pot. Using the scoop is important because its the basis of the ratio that I found works for this recipe: 2 scoops of uncooked short-grain rice for every 1.75 scoops of water.

I have not tested it with anything other than 2 cups of rice, so your results may vary drastically if you try to scale this up or down. With a normal rice cooker at least, you cant just scale the ingredients equally.

Rinse your rice over running water and place it in the Instant Pot metal container.

Pour the appropriate water ratio over the rice, and even out the rice with a paddle or clean hands. Close and lock the lid, and close the steam valve so the machine can build pressure.

Use the low-pressure setting and cook for 10 minutes with the natural pressure release on. Make sure to turn off the keep warm setting.

Once its finished letting out all the pressure and steam, carefully remove the lid, and use a paddle to fluff the rice. Eat the rice fresh and serve immediately.;To learn how to properly eat rice with chopsticks, you can read my chopstick tutorial.

Why Use Natural Pressure Release

Natural pressure release is the way to go when it comes to cooking rice in an instant pot. Think of this as settling time, similar to when you cook rice on the stove-top and allow it sit off of the burner with the lid cocked a bit.

I have found with trial and error that using only the QPR often results on wet rice or sticky rice. If you are in a rush and just cant wait the full natural pressure release, give it at least 5 to 7 minutes before hitting the quick release.

Use A Natural Pressure Release

No matter what kind of rice youre cooking, its a good idea to let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes before opening the pot. This allows the moisture to distribute evenly throughout the grains, and helps it unstick from the bottom of the pot, too.

You *can* open the pot with a quick pressure release if you like, but it really does benefit from a little resting time!

Making Coconut Rice On The Stove Top

How to make pot-in-pot rice in the Instant Pot–Instant Pot Tips

While the Instant Pot is my go-to , this is a snap to make on the stove top as well.

  • Your ingredients will stay the same; two parts coconut milk to one part rice
  • Add the rinsed rice and milk to a small pot
  • Bring to a boil
  • Turn down heat, cover and cook for 15 minutes
  • Remove from heat, let sit for 10 minutes then fluff with fork.;

My Rice Is Sticking To The Bottom

Did you do a quick release or a natural release? One of the reasons rice will stick to the bottom is because you have to let the pressure go down slowly instead of abruptly. You want to do a natural release for at least 10-minutes.

Was your keep warm button on? The heat from the keep warm function can continue to cook the rice during your natural release. Be sure to turn off your keep warm function to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom. You want fluffy rice particles, not clumpy, sticky rice.

At the end of the day, finding the perfect rice times will depend on the type of rice you use, the location you live and the amount of water you add to the rice. Dont be scared to experiment and you can get the perfect pressure cooker rice every time you cook it! Enjoy!

How To Make Instant Pot Apple Butter

Wash the apples and then cut the cores out of them. You can leave them in halves or quarters. Theres no need to peel the apples. For the orange, I only use half of it, or it can be overpowering. So just slice about 3-4 slices and remove the peel. Pour the fruit into the Instant Pot inner pot.

Add the cinnamon sticks, nutmeg and star anise. If you like more spice, you can add two of each. You can also add clove, if you like it.

Pour in the water and brown sugar. Stir it all up. Then Lock the lid. Press the pressure cook button and set the time to 15 minutes on high pressure.

After time is up, allow a natural release for 15 minutes, then turn off the Instant Pot and open the lid.

Depending on how much water you added, the mixture might still be a little liquidy at this stage. You can scoop out some of the cider to make it thicker, or turn on saute mode to let the mixture cook down for about 5 minutes.;It really depends on how thick you want the butter to be.

Using an immersion blender, blend it up until its super smooth. You need to be sure to pulverize all of the apple skins. If you dont have an immersion blender, cool the mixture and blend it in the blender in batches until smooth.

    How To Adjust The Recipe

I had to do many variations on this recipe to get it exactly how I like it. If you are using different types of rice, like medium or long grain, or even brown rice, you may need to adjust the recipe to get perfect results. Start with the one I have posted here, then adjust to your liking. Here are some tips.

Low pressure seems to be the way to go.

If your rice is too mushy or watery, reduce the water by 1/4 a cup or reduce the cooking time by 1 minute and retest it.

If the rice is too hard or dry, increase the water by 1/4 a scoop, or increase cooking time by 1 or 2 minutes.

Where To Buy An Instant Pot

    Instant Pot Rice

    This is the 6-quart Instant Pot I started out with. After a few years, we added an 8-quart partly because I knew I would use two at the same time often enough, partly because it was the Prime Day sale, and also because I wanted more space for certain recipes. Both are a pretty basic model and you dont need more bells and whistles than that!;

If youre deciding on size, most people say its better to get a deal on the 6-quart and just have 2 rather than go big, BUT if your family has 5 or more people or you really like to batch cook or do more than a pound of beans, the 8-quart may be the best choice. If one is using an instant pot for cooking other dishes simultaneously as the rice, make sure to adjust its heat level accordingly and consider adding 10-15 minutes to ensure full cooking.
