My Secret To Buying Cheap Meat

Instant Pot Recipe | Quick BEEF STEW Recipe | Pressure Cooker Beef Stew

You may have heard me talk about how I stock my freezer with cheap meat. I go once a week to the grocery store to get bread for lunches and bananas for Marks breakfast. He eats cereal and bananas every morning.

I grab a shopping basket and walk to the back of the store where the meat department is located. The basket almost pulls me back there, just kidding! I scan the section very quickly. All the meat is marked down an additional 30% off the lowest marked price.

Can you hear me squealing yet? Its crazy, I grab all the choice meat cuts I can and place them in my basket. THEN I go through the packages and keep the ones that will work for me. None of them have seasoning on them, I dont care for those.

I pay for them and take them home to my freezer. These are the best deals ever for my pocketbook.

Did you see my post on how to use an Instant Pot? I had some cooking printables made to go with the 3-quart and 6-quart Instant Pot pressure cookers that may help you. They would be great printed on cardstock. 3-quart Instant Pot times cheat sheet or our 6-quart Instant Pot times cheat sheet.

Instant Pot Steam Setting

The Steam setting on the Instant Pot is perfect for cooking vegetables, fish and seafood, tofu and any other food that is suitable to steaming. This function uses Low pressure, which helps to avoid overcooking the food and means that the Instant Pot will come to pressure quicker. You need to use the trivet/steam rack provided to elevate food from cooking liquid. Always use QR to prevent food from overcooking. Below is how to use the Steam setting on Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add a cup of water to the inner pot and place the trivet on top. You can place the vegetables or a piece of fish or thinly sliced chicken on top of the trivet OR you can use an additional steam basket or a round pan with holes that fits inside the pot. A steamer basket might be useful for smaller-sized vegetables or cut-up vegetables to prevent them from falling into the water.
  • Secure and lock the lid. Press the Steam button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at Low pressure for 10 minutes. If you press the Steam button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.

Can You Cook Frozen Ground Beef In The Instant Pot

You can cook frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot, which is fantastic since it doesnt thaw very evenly in the microwave, and who actually remembers to take meat out the day before to thaw?

Not me, thats for sure.

Cooking frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot takes about 20 minutes. If your blocks of ground beef are really thick it will likely take a bit longer than that.

I freeze my ground beef in flat, 1-1.5 inch thick blocks and it takes 20 minutes to cook almost all the way through in the Instant Pot.

You can add a few more minutes to get it completely cooked through, but I find its easier to crumble and break up if its still a bit pink in the middle.

It only takes a couple minutes with the saute function to break it up and finish cooking it after the pressure cooking cycle is complete.

What Vegetables To Serve This With

My personal favorite is to serve this with some sauteed Brussels sprouts, but I know potatoes and carrots are a much more popular option.

I think the potatoes and carrots will taste best if you roast them separately in the oven, or you could try making my popular Honey Glazed Carrots!

If you want to cook the potatoes and carrots in the Instant Pot with the roast, youll need to decrease the cooking time by 15 minutes and do a quick release. Then add in halved potatoes and carrots. Cook everything for the remaining 15 minutes and then proceed with the natural release for 30 minutes.

How To Thicken Beef Stew

Instant Pot Beef Stew

You can easily add a cornstarch slurry to the stew if you want a thicker beef stew. However, its totally not necessary.

To Thicken with a cornstarch slurry, which is equal parts cornstarch and water. Add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water into a small bowl.

You never want to add them directly to the Instant Pot bowl you want to mix them.

Mix the cornstarch and water well, and then pour into the Instant Pot bowl. Mix well. Let it simmer for about a minute or two until fully dissolved.

Meat takes a long time to get cooked in the instant pot, but too much time can also tenderize it. The pressure in the instant pot makes the meat tender if it is cooked slowly. For tasty instant pot meat and not tender you need to figure out how long to cook it. Cooking time in an instant pot also depends upon the type of meat you want to cook like chicken requires less cooking time as compared to beef and mutton requires more time as compared to beef.
