How To Make Instant Pot White Rice:

This recipe only has three ingredients and literally takes minutes to throw together.

Many sources will say you have to rinse the rice before adding it to the stainless steel liner. I use to rinse the rice through a mesh sieve every single time.

It didnt matter which brand of rice I was using, it got rinsed for several minutes until the water ran clear. For some reason, the rice always seemed a little gummy, clumped, and sometimes stuck to the bottom of pot.

That seems counterintuitive, since rinsing the rice is supposed to wash away excess starch and keep it from being overly sticky. Eventually, I started just dumping it in.

That worked so much better than rinsing, so now thats how I do it every time.

Since there is no need to rinse the rice, simply add all the ingredients to the Instant Pot, and give them a quick stir.

Next, close the lid, and make sure the valve is set to sealing. Our model has the Rice button and allows a toggle from low to high pressure.

Set the Instant Pot to Rice on low pressure. It should automatically set for 12 minutes.

Every Instant Pot takes some time to come to pressure before it actually starts to cook, so it will take a few minutes to begin to count down the cook time.

This depends on the pots contents, whether it is set to low or high pressure, and the temperature of the ingredients .

Use a fork to fluff the rice. It should be al dente; or firm when bitten. Use this rice as a side dish for your favorite recipes.

What Is Sticky Rice

Sticky rice is made with a special short grain rice variety referred to by various names: glutinous rice, waxy rice or sweet rice. A number of varieties can be used, including japonica,;indica;and;tropical japonica. This type of rice is popular in various parts of Asia, including southeast Asian countries, East Asia, Bhutan and Northeastern India. Sticky rice gets its name because…well, it’s sticky! Although it’s often referred to as glutinous, it’s gluten-free as the term glutinous simply means glue-like. So, nothing to worry about here if you’re gluten-free like me!

Sticky rice is an incredibly versatile ingredient, used for sweet dishes such as donuts and dumplings and a huge variety of savoury dishes such as pancakes, a hash brown style crispy rice cake and rice crackers.

Flour made from sticky rice is most well known as the key ingredient to make mochi in Japan, which I’ve been experimenting with a lot lately – starting with my recipe for Dark Chocolate Mochi Cupcakes. Keep an eye out for more recipes coming soon. The same special qualities that make the rice sticky also produce a chewy quality when the flour is used in baking. It’s such a fun ingredient to play around with.

Um, not my favorite method.

I like things simple. I basically want the same convenience as a microwave but without the waves.

I store my leftover rice in a heat-proof glass container and then place the trivet in the Instant Pot, add a cup of water and place the rice uncovered on the trivet. Put the lid on, knob to sealing and press steam for 5 minutes. Quick pressure release, done!

Instant Pot Rice To Water Ratio

The most important thing to remember is that the ratio of liquid to rice is different than when cooking rice on the stovetop,” explains Haymaker. Most stovetop rice recipes call for a ratio of 2 parts liquid to 1 part rice.

When using the Instant Pot, the ratio shrinks to 1 to 1 for most types of rice. “Because there is very little evaporation in the Instant Pot, you use equal parts rice to water,” says Haymaker.

Whole grains like brown rice benefit from a little extra liquid use a ratio of 1.25 parts liquid to 1 part rice.

How To Make Rice In An Instant Pot

If you follow these simple steps, you’ll have fluffy, perfectly cooked long-grain white rice every time.

  • Rinse the rice. Rinse the rice in a colander until the water runs clear, and then drain it very well. While this step is technically optional, it does result in fluffier, better-textured rice.
  • Add it to the pot. Once the rice is rinsed and drained, add it to the inner pot of the Instant Pot.
  • Measure the liquid. To make white rice, you’ll use equal parts liquid and rice. Note that you cannot make less than a cup of rice in the Instant Pot since it needs a minimum of about 1 cup of liquid for the pot to come to pressure.
  • Season. Salt is a common addition, but you can add other flavorings like spices.
  • Lock the lid. Turn the lid until it locks and make sure the valve is in the sealing position.
  • Program the pot. Select manual/pressure cook and set the Instant Pot to 3 minutes at high pressure.
  • Use a natural release. Let the pot naturally release its pressure after cooking for at least 10 minutes. If the Instant Pot still hasn’t unlocked, you can release the remaining pressure manually.
  • Fluff and serve. Use a fork to fluff the rice and serve while hot.

The benefit of cooking any variety of rice using the pot-in-pot method is that you can cook another dish on the bottom of the pot at the same time. For example, my Instant Pot Chipotle Burrito Bowls have dry black beans cook from scratch on the bottom of the pot, while a bowl of brown rice cooks on top of that in a separate bowl.

You can do the same thing with chicken and white rice, with the chicken cooking on the bottom of the Instant Pot while a bowl of white rice cooks on top. The thing to keep in mind when cooking two dishes at once is that both dishes need to cook in roughly the same amount of time. Ive listed plenty of pot-in-pot cooking times for you to refer to!

You can even cook chicken and cauliflower rice together, like in my Instant Pot Chicken Burrito Bowls.

It is definelty not necessary to soak the rice before cooking it. In fact, I rarely do it!

But if you do have the time, you can soak it in water for 15-20 min before cooking it.

Soaking rice in water, helps rice to absorb water making it softer and prevents it from breaking. It also reduces starch content in cooked rice more than just rinsing the rice.

    Minimum Amounts Of Rice

    Instant Pot Rice

One last rule of thumb to keep in mind is that youll need to cook at least 1 1/2 cups of rice in a 6-quart pressure cooker to get nice, even results. This is because the bottom of the pot isnt perfectly flat, but slightly concave. If you use less rice, the grains in the middle of the pot will not cook as evenly, since they wont be submerged in the water as much as the rice on the sides of the pot.

On the flip side, dont overfill your pressure cooker with too much rice, either! It should be half full or less when youre cooking any grains, beans, pastas, or other foods that can tend to foam up. I find that I get the best results when I cook between 1 1/2 and 3 cups of rice at a time.

    • TIP! By the way, you can always make extra rice and freeze the extra. Here’s how to do that.
