How to make Brown Basmati Rice in the Instant Pot

The recipe below is for cooking 2 cups of rice, which will yield about 6 cups of cooked rice. The water to rice ratio and cook time stay the same regardless of the amount of rice you are cooking.

You can cook more rice as long as you dont exceed the maximum fill lines on your pot. Rice will expand as it cooks, so you have to account for this:

  • You can double this recipe to cook 4 cups of rice in a 6 quart Instant Pot, which will make about 12 cups of cooked rice.
  • If you have an 8 quart Instant Pot , you can triple this recipe to cook 6 cups rice. This will make about 18 cups of cooked rice.

White Rice Vs Brown Rice

When white rice is so much quicker than brown rice: why eat brown rice? In short: brown rice has more nutrients because its less processed. So Alex and I try to eat brown when we have time. Heres the breakdown:

  • Brown rice is less processed = more nutrients. White rice has its hull, bran and germ removed. Brown rice has only the hull removed, so it keeps the nutrient-packed bran and germ. This means it has more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants than white rice.
  • Brown rice has more fiber. 1 cup of cooked white rice has 0.6 grams fiber, but 1 cup cooked brown rice has 3.2 grams of fiber, 13% of your daily need.

How To Cook Brown Rice In Instant Pot

Cooking rice needs perfection on the amount of water and time. I was never able to get that for brown rice prior to using the instant pot. Sometimes there would be water left, sometime the rice would be undercooked. However now with the instant pot, I can always cook perfect brown rice.

This is a no soak method. Just wash the rice, 22 minutes pressure cook in the instant pot and 10 minutes natural pressure release. Sounds easyit actually is!

I like to have rice al dente, and separate. I dont like sticky or mushy rice. Hence I use a 1:1.25 rice to water ratio, which has consistently given me perfect results.

Traditionally cooked basmati rice in a saucepan needs double the water amount than the rice. However in the instant pot, less water is enough to get perfectly cooked rice.

Main things to remember for perfect Brown Basmati Rice

  • No soaking of rice
  • Rice to water ratio 1:1.25
  • Pressure Cook / Manual for 22 minutes
  • 10 minute NPR Manually release the pressure 10 minutes after the instant pot beeps

You can also choose to select the RICE smart program button. This program cooks on low pressure and is best used for white rice. For rice with a firmer texture or thinner rice like Jasmine or Basmati, use the Less mode for rice with a normal texture or regular long-grain or medium-grain white rice, use the Normal mode for rice with a softer texture, use the More mode. You can change the modes by pressing the RICE button again. Use quick release at the end.

How To Cook Instant Pot Basmati Rice

STEP 1 : To make perfect basmati rice in the Instant Pot, start by adding the rice to a bowl of cold water. You will need just enough water to cover the rice and then rinse it several times until the water becomes clear.

Although not necessary, you may soak the rice in water for 10-15 minutes and then rinse until the water becomes clear. Next, drain the rice!

Soaking will help the rice grain to acquire extralength, which is characteristic of basmati rice. According to researchers, this soaking step also helps reduce toxins by 80%.

If you soak the rice before cooking, use just 1 cup of water to cook 1 cup of rice in the Instant Pot. But if you only rinse the rice, then increase the rice to water ratio to 1:1 ¼ cups.

Note that cooking basmati rice in a saucepan requires double the volume of water than rice. However, less water is enough to get perfectly cooked rice in the pressure cooker.

STEP 2 : Add rinsed and drained rice to the Instant Pot and pour in the water. You will need 1 ¼ cups of water for every 1 cup of rinsed rice. If you soaked the rice, you will need just 1 cup of water!

Stir in the salt and the oil. Although not required, I like to add oil to mine because it will help the grains not to clump together!

Lock the lid, turn the valve to sealing, and cook on high pressure for 3 minutes. Depending on your model, you may have to either use the manual function or press the rice button and adjust the time manually.

How Much Rice Can You Cook In The Instant Pot

The most rice Ive ever cooked at one time is 3 cups of dry rice with 3 cups of water. I think you could probably go up to 5 cups of dry rice, as long as you dont fill the pot more than halfway full for safety.

Rice creates foamy, starchy water as it cooks, so you wouldnt want it to rise too high during the cooking cycle and damage your pot.

When doubling or tripling a recipe in the Instant Pot, the cooking time doesnt change. However, the overall time will be longer when you cook a larger quantity, because it will take longer for the pot to come to pressure when compared to a smaller quantity of rice.

Why Is My Rice Still Crunchy

If your rice is still crunchy, there was not enough water added or the pressure was not released correctly from the Instant Pot. Unfortunately, there isnt a way to ensure you wont get the burn notice if you try to continue to cook the rice.

To use crunchy rice, add it to a soup or make cook in a little oil and water on the stove top in a skillet.

How to Cook Brown Rice and White Basmati Rice in the Instant Pot

There are two cooking methods for brown rice in the Instant Pot – dump-and-start or pot-in-pot.

I follow the dump-and-start whenever I am solely making a side of brown rice, but the pot-in-pot allows you to cook the rice while simultaneously cooking your main meal. Follow whichever method suits your needs.

Is Soaking The Basmati Rice Necessary

I found a difference between rice that was cooked after soaking and without soaking.

The rice cooked for the same time, without soaking, always ended up having a bite in the middle of the rice.It didnt plump up enough.

That said, if you dont have the time and patience for it, you can do two things

  • Measure out the water, rice and delay the cooking by 20 minutes. This way you do things in ONE shot.
  • Add 1/8- 1/4 times more water and cook for same time.

Do not be afraid to try different variations in this recipe. One idea is using different broths instead of just water. For example vegetable broth or chicken broth.

Mix in spices for example. A little bit of cumin powder or some taco seasoning for a little Mexican flavor. This is great when using the rice for meal plan bowls.

A simple squeeze of lime juice can up the flavor when the rice is done cooking. A pinch of chopped cilantro at the end is also delicious.

Brown Rice In Instant Pot Or Pressure Cookers

How to Cook Instant Pot Brown Basmati Rice- Healthy Brown Basmati Rice- Healthy Rice

Ive tested and made brown rice in many different ways: rice cookers, stovetop, microwaves, and instant pots. These days, Instant Pots are super popular electric pressure cookers that can cook many different types of recipes.

Brown rice is one of my favorite things to cook in an Instant Pot because its almost foolproof. Cooking brown rice in an instant is definitely faster than using a rice cooker or more hands-free than using a microwave. Using an Instant Pot for brown rice is also much less finicky than cooking jasmine rice in an Instant Pot or cooking white rice in an Instant Pot because the ratios for water and brown rice are similar across the board.

Since brown rice still has the outer layer of bran intact , it takes a bit longer for it to cook. With the use of an Instant Pot, cooking brown rice takes about 20 minutes of cooking time plus the pressure release time . This is significantly quicker than using a rice cooker, which can take upwards of 45 minutes to cook.

I can talk about flavor and texture all day but as far as whats better for your health: brown rice or white rice? The truth is I dont know. You can find research both for and against both types of rice. Some people consider brown rice to be more nutritious because its a whole grain and less processed than white rice. Others consider white rice to be a safe-starch and say brown rice is harder to digest. My personal opinion: eat real food that your body can tolerate and enjoy those foods in moderation.
