How To Cook Ribs In An Instant Pot

Ribs are one of my favorite summertime foods. Perfect for a family BBQ or larger get together, ribs make a bold statement.

I love to grill food, but sometimes I dont have the time to labour over a smoker or grill. Thankfully, the Instant Pot comes to the rescue and shaves off several hours of time!

I can safely say that the Instant Pot Ribs Recipe cooks the meat so tenderly and truly so perfectly. Instant Pot ribs are so easy and the meat falls right off the bone. The cooking time is so much quicker in the Instant Pot than in the oven and you can achieve the same texture, too, with my Instant Pot Baby Back Ribs Recipe!

Instant Pot Baby Back Ribs

BABY, come BACK You asked for it, so youre getting it!

Because the most requested video recipe to come my way was RIBS, and since were in the swing of summer, theres no better time than now to share this with everyone.

And so, I give you BABY BACK RIBS!

It couldnt be easier, and because were cooking these in our fabulous Instant Pot, its fall-off-the-bone style. Were talking the most tender, flavorful, messy and to-die-for ribs they way they should be!

Heres How I Made It!:

Lets start off with some unseasoned/unsauced baby back ribs . You can really use up to two racks if using a 6 qt or three if you use an 8 qt. I get mine from Costco and they come three in a pack for a very reasonable price!

Plus, the membrane is already removed. BUT if you dont have a Costco membership, no worries! Just get however many racks you want from your supermarket and peel off the membrane if its still on it.

You may also want to cut each rack in half for easy removal when done cooking since they will be SUPER tender by that stage.

Lay the ribs in a coil fashion in the Instant Pot.

Now were gonna add the magical ingredients that make these ribs so fall-off-the-bone tender and out of this world. Start with some apple juice.

Then add in some apple cider vinegar

When done cooking, your ribs are going to be super delicate due to how tender the meat has become!

Using two sets of tongs , CAREFULLY transfer the ribs from the IP

to a foil-lined baking sheet.

Serving Instant Pot Ribs

  • Instant Pot Ribs, 2 Racks: For a crowd, you can cook two racks of Instant Pot ribs at the same time. Simply place two racks on the trivet, overlapping one inside the other if needed. The pressure cook time does not change .
  • Sauce It Up: While you dont *need* extra barbecue sauce on the side, my personal favorite way to eat ribs is good and slathered. Look for sauce without high fructose corn syrupthough I admit that unless Im making the barbecue sauce from scratch, ribs with Sweet Baby Rays do always seem to be a hit.
  • Side Dish Ideas: Instant Pot ribs and potatoes is a classic combo. Try these easy Crock Pot Baked Potatoes, make-ahead Crockpot Breakfast Potatoes crispy Baked Fries, or keep it simple with potato chips.

Apply Sauce And Broil In Oven/air Fryer

Baby Back Ribs Recipe

*Tip for if youre using the Oven: While the baby back ribs are cooking in the Instant Pot, preheat the oven to 450°F.

First, carefully set the baby back ribs on an oven tray or chopping board, then generously brush your favorite BBQ sauce all over the ribs on all sides including the bones.

*Note: You can use an oven, toaster oven, Instant Pot Duo Crisps Air Fry function or Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid for this finishing caramelization step.

*Pro Tip: If you have a large oven, you can finish the ribs in one batch. If youre using the Duo Crisp lid or Air Fryer lid, youll need to cut the ribs into halves, then finish them in 2 batches.

*Pro Tip: Its best to broil the ribs before cutting it into serving size to retain more moisture.

How To Remove The Membrane From Pork Ribs

Remove the membrane from the posterior ribs. At one end of the rack, slide a food knife under the membrane and onto a bone. Lift the diaphragm and loosen it until it breaks. Grasp the edge of the membrane with a paper towel and remove it. The membrane may come off in one piece or you may have to peel it off in smaller pieces.

How To Remove Membrane From Ribs

In some cases, you might end up buying ribs that have a white, shiny membrane connective tissue on the back . If you notice the membrane, then follow these steps to quickly and easily remove it:

  • Ensure the ribs are facing down .
  • Then, slide your fingers under the membrane and rip it off. Also, you could use a knife instead. At one end of the rack, slide a knife under the membrane and over a bone. Use a paper towel to grab the edge of the membrane and pull it off.

How To Reverse Sear After Pressure Cooking

Okay, so you do the pressure cooking first. Like I said, just throw them in there. Then what? Well, they need a nice crust. I have tested two ways to get a nice crust on these after theyve finished pressure cooking.

The first is to use the air fryer. Eight short ribs fit perfectly in a single layer in my air fryer. You mist the ribs lightly with cooking oil , sprinkle them with a little bit of salt, and then put them into the air fryer at 400F for 7-10 minutes, no flipping required, until nice and brown.

The second method to get a good reverse sear on the short ribs is to put them under the broiler. Again, mist them lightly with some cooking oil and season them lightly with salt, and then put them on a pan about 6 inches from the broiling heat source. Watch them carefully because they sometimes brown more quickly than I expect, but youre looking at about 3-5 minutes and then you flip them over and do another 3-5 minutes on the other side.

I dont recommend using the Instant Pot on Sauté to get a sear on the short ribs after pressure cooking. I tried it and it took a long time and I had to do it in batches or else they wouldnt brown. So definitely go with the air fryer or broiler.

How Do I Fit The Pressure Cooker Bbq Baby Back Ribs In The Cooking Pot

Instant Pot Country Ribs | Gregs Kitchen

Before cooking, I like to cut the ribs into two or three rib sections to make them easier to fit in the pressure cooking pot. I prefer this method to ensure that there is enough space around the ribs that theyll cook evenly.

However, some of my Facebook friends have had great success rolling their ribs in a coil and standing them on their side .

Can You Overcook Pork In A Pressure Cooker

Unfortunately, once you overcook a piece of meat in the pressure cooker, theres no going back. Because the size dictates how quickly the heat will get to the center of the meat. A roast, for example, has the longest distance for heat to travel from the outside to the center of the meat. And, thats about 45 minutes.

Instant Pot Beef Ribs Vs Baby Back Ribs

Instant Pot Baby Back Pork Ribs (VIDEO)

To start off, beef ribs as the name states, are from a cow. These ribs are typically the ribs that come from a rib roast. These are the ribs labeled beef ribs in the grocery store. When you have a boneless ribeye, these are the bones that have been removed.

Baby back ribs are pork and are from a pig, not a cow. These ribs tend to cook much quicker and are smaller than the beef ribs. If you love baby back ribs, check out my post where I teach you how to Instant Pot baby back ribs.

How Long Do I Cook Baby Back Ribs In The Pressure Cooker

As a rule of thumb, when making meat in the pressure cooker, if you release the pressure and the meat is too tough for your taste, then you need to increase the cook time. If your meat is drier than you like, decrease the cook time.

Use an instant-read thermometer to verify your baby back ribs have an internal temp of at least 145°F in the thickest part of the ribs after cooking.

Ive found that 15 minutes at High Pressure leads to ribs that are tender yet they still have a bit of bite and hold their shape when grilling.

If you want the ribs more fall off the bone tender, cook them another longer Id start with 5 minutes and go from there.

Yes. You can make Instant Pot ribs ahead of time. Pressure cook the ribs up to 2 days ahead. Cool completely and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to eat, brush them with the BBQ sauce and warm them up in a preheated 350 degree oven until warm through. What Are Beef Short Ribs

What kind of meat is short ribs? Its not what you might think!

Surprisingly, boneless beef short ribs are not actually rib meat. They are cut from the chuck, or shoulder, but can be harder to find.

Bone-in short ribs come from the belly and are a much fattier cut of meat. Many butchers will actually remove the bones from bone-in short ribs for you, which is what I did for this boneless short rib recipe.

TIP: If youre using bone-in short ribs, you will need to increase the pressure cook time to 50 minutes. Short rib meat takes a bit longer to cook with the bones than without.

How Long To Cook Short Ribs In The Instant Pot

For the recipe below, I have about 3 pounds of short ribs on the bone. Thats about 8 short ribs. I set them to pressure cook for 30 minutes, and then do a 15 minute natural release. At that point, the meat is really tender but is still attached to the bone.

Note that Ive seen pressure cooker short rib recipes online that call for 45 minutes or longer plus natural release, but I have found the extra time to not be necessary, and to even make the ribs too tender . Thirty minutes plus the 15 minute natural release gives you really tender meat that still has that bit of beefy texture to it. Theyre tender enough to cut with the side of a fork, but you do need to put a little bit of pressure. I find that to be perfect.

What Is The Trivet For The Instant Pot

If youve made a recipe in the Instant Pot before, you may or may not have used a trivet. A trivet is usually a metal stand that is 1-4 inches in height that allows you to cook food without the food sitting in the liquid. Liquid is needed for the pressure cooker to come up to pressure. Without added liquid no recipe will work at all.

Below are some of my favorite trivets for the Instant Pot

I decided to go with country style pork ribs because they are so very meaty!

I do like baby back ribs as well, but Iâve definitely bought them, then been disappointed at the measly amount of meat I got out of it.

Using country style ribs ensures that everybody leaves the table satisfied!

Depending on your grocery store, sometimes these ribs are sold bone in, and sometimes bone out. Mine were bone out. But, either one will work just fine!
