How to make Long Grain White Rice in your Instant Pot

One last rule of thumb to keep in mind is that youll need to cook at least 1 1/2 cups of rice in a 6-quart pressure cooker to get nice, even results. This is because the bottom of the pot isnt perfectly flat, but slightly concave. If you use less rice, the grains in the middle of the pot will not cook as evenly, since they wont be submerged in the water as much as the rice on the sides of the pot.

On the flip side, dont overfill your pressure cooker with too much rice, either! It should be half full or less when youre cooking any grains, beans, pastas, or other foods that can tend to foam up. I find that I get the best results when I cook between 1 1/2 and 3 cups of rice at a time.

  • TIP! By the way, you can always make extra rice and freeze the extra. Here’s how to do that.

Those are my best tips for cooking rice! Of course, you can also just follow the basic recipe below. Either way, enjoy!

    How To Reheat Rice

When I reheat rice I always use it in fried rice. That way I know I warmed my rice thoroughly.

It is very important to heat all of your rice because of bacteria that can survive in cooked rice.

So heat your wok or skillet to hot and add your rice. You can reheat from frozen. Just stir it continuously until you see all of the rice is piping hot. Then serve.

You can also reheat the rice using the microwave but I never do this. If you do, add 2 tablespoons of water to an airtight container with the rice.

Put the container in the microwave and heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until it is really hot through.

Check if the internal temperature is at least 165 or hotter and serve immediately.

    • Rinse & Drain Rice Well: Its important to rinse the rice until the water becomes clear. You can rinse it using the inner pot of the Instant Pot, if desired. Just add the rice, run it under cold water and rub the rice together using both hands. This will get rid of excess starches on the surface and prevent the rice from becoming gluey. Be sure to drain it to avoid cooking it with too much water.
    • Use the Same Measuring Cup: I recommend using the same measuring cup for the rice and the water to ensure that the ratio is one to one.
    • Can I Double the Recipe? Sure! Use equal proportions of water and rice and cook it for the same amount of time. You can make however much youd like following this ratio just remember not to fill your Instant Pot more than halfway.

You can cook rice 2 different ways in the Instant Pot. The most straight-forward way is to pour the rice and water directly into the bottom of the stainless steel pot and cook it on its own.

This is the method I use when making a large batch of rice for the week ahead, as part of my meal prep routine. Its nice to have some cooked rice on hand for a quick weeknight stir-fry!

Add 1 cup cold water and a trivet in the Instant Pot inner pot.

Layer the stainless steel bowl filled with 1 cup Jasmine rice and 1 cup water on the trivet.

    Pressure Cooking Method:

Natural Pressure Release Vs Quick Pressure Release

Whats better? Hands down, no doubt > > natural pressure release. If you cook rice longer so you can do quick pressure release, with the hope to have the rice cooked faster overall, it gets sticky and mushy.

I encourage you to be patient and wait for natural pressure release. I timed all rice and there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the timing. Even the same kind of rice in the same amount has had different natural pressure release times.

How to Make the PERFECT Instant Pot Rice – White Rice, Brown Rice and Wild Rice

Its very simple, but there are a couple changes that I make from my traditional recipe for perfect rice on the stovetop. First is the water ratio While I generally use 1 cup rice to 1 ¼ cups water for my stovetop rice, in the Instant Pot, that ratio drops down to 1-to-1. 1 cup of water for every one cup of rice You can make as little or as much Instant Pot rice as youd like.

The reason for the reduced water is that the Instant Pot is more sealed than a traditional cooking pot, meaning less evaporation of water during the cooking process. Be sure to rinse that rice before adding it to the Instant Pot, to get rid of any additional starches Just run it under water until the water is clear. The result is perfect Instant Pot rice thats light and fluffy.

I also like to add in 1 teaspoon of oil for each cup of rice that Im making This not only prevents the rice from sticking to the pot, but it also cuts down on the foaming a bit so that your Instant Pot doesnt sputter and spit. Plus, for perfect Instant Pot rice, I always add a pinch of salt for each cup of rice that Im cooking, to flavor the rice right from the get-go.

Is Sona Masoori Rice Healthier Than Basmati Rice

It’s always debatable which rice is best like sona masoori vs basmati rice. Sona masoori is not polished, easy to digest, and basmati rice is polished. Basmati falls under low GI whereas masoori rice falls under high GI. Sona masuri rice is also said to be a genetically modified variety . So any rice is the healthiest rice in moderation.

    Soak Rice For 20 Minutes

I tried both soaking rice and skip soaking rice prior to cook rice in the Instant Pot. Whether its cooked in manual mode or Rice mode, when I didnt soak rice, it did not become tender all the way through.

This is probably the only difference between cooking other types of rice. I often get asked why we need to soak Japanese short grain rice. Unlike the other types of rice, Japanese short grain rice is plump, and it takes time for the moisture to go through. Therefore, we always soak the rice first, giving the dry rice a head start in absorbing moisture.

Do I Have To Use Natural Release Of The Pressure

    Instant Pot Rice

    Yes!

Waiting for the pressure to drop naturally avoids the problem of rice sticking to the bottom of the inner pot.

If you are in a hurry, we recommend using Natural Release for 10 minutes before releasing the rest of the pressure using Quick Release. Just dont touch the steam release until at least 10 minutes have passed. Not if you want perfect rice, anyway.

Tips For The Best Instant Pot Jasmine Rice

This Jasmine rice is super simple but following these tips will make it fluffy and tender every time!

    • Always rinse your rice before cooking it in an instant pot! This will remove surface starch, and rinsing it will keep it from getting foamy and messy. If you dont have or cant find Jasmine rice, you can use another long grain white rice in its place, like Basmati rice.
    • Dont leave the rice in the instant pot on the warm setting or it will stick to the bottom and possibly burn.
    • Use a 1:1 ratio of rice and liquid or your rice will become too mushy.
    • You can modify this recipe for 3 cups of rice or 1 cup of rice, depending on how many people you are serving. Just be sure to also adjust your liquid, too.

Cook In High Pressure For 2 Minutes

After testing a few different variations, the best cooking time for short grain rice is 2 minutes on high pressure. Ive also tried using the Rice mode on the Instant Pot, which is set to 12 minutes on low pressure. As both manual and Rice mode takes 5 minutes to pressurize, Rice mode takes extra 10 minutes to cook.
