Instant Pot Vs Crock Pot

Instant Pot Classic Pot Roast | Boneless Chuck Roast Recipe

I think chuck roasts are especially easy to cook in the Instant Pot. Unlike a crock pot that often allows too much moisture to escape through the lid, the Instant Pot locks in the juices of whatever meat youre cooking. Im not saying dont use a crock pot or slow cooker, but I definitely prefer the Instant Pot to a Crock Pot.

Why Use An Instant Pot

Have you joined the instant pot craze??

I put it off, like I usually do with new kitchen gadgets, because I was afraid it was a funky trend that would fizzle out but after friends raving non stop about theirs, I broke down and got myself one.

Im obsessed! Where has this thing been all of my life?

And just to clear things up, I say Instant Pot because thats the brand that I own and is most familiar with everyone, but these recipes are not sponsored by the brand in any way and any pressure cooker will do just fine! I dont care what brand it is, just get your hands on one pronto. Its seriously takes one pot cooking to a whole new level of awesome.

Sunday Pot Roast In The Instant Pot

Pot Roast has always been a favorite Sunday dinner in our family. Sometimes we make it with mashed potatoes, sometimes with ingredients like carrots and potatoes cooked with the roast. Either way, it is always delicious. Because I sometimes forget to put the roast in the oven or slow cooker in time, I find myself scrambling to get dinner ready. Ive walked in the door from church and thought, SHOOT! I never put the roast in! If you are like me, this Instant Pot recipe is a lifesaver especially on those days. I imagine other cuts would work well too but chuck is known to pull apart well.

Why I add onions to just about every pressure cooker recipe I make, because theyre cheap and add lots of flavor. They provide a bit of texture too which is great when the rest of your ingredients are rather soft.

Yes you can make this in a Crockpot Express or Ninja Foodi machine too. They all work pretty much the same.

  • This recipe is somewhat similar to our Instant Pot pulled pork recipe but I used a larger cut of meat for that. Either way there is nothing this multi cooker cant make so tender it melts in your mouth.

Natural Release Locks In Those Instant Pot Chuck Roast Juices

So Fast and Delicious! Instant Pot Chuck Roast The 2 Spoons

When cooking meat in the Instant Pot, one important tip is to use natural release vs. the quick release method. Natural release is when you allow the Instant Pot to come down from pressure naturally. Now, it does take additional time to do this , but natural release essentially lets the cooked meat rest, which ensures the chuck roast stays juicy. Quick release is when you switch the pressure valve to vent, which prematurely releases the pressure from the Instant Pot.

If you are in a hurry, try to give the Instant Pot at least 15 minutes of natural release before letting out the rest of the pressure manually.

Since we are using a pressure cooker, if after our suggested cook time, the beef is not as tender as youd like, you will need to place the lid back onto the pot, seal it, and then cook at high pressure for additional time .

They are the perfect size and they dont get mushy. Potatoes that are peeled and cut tend to get mushy in the Instant Pot when they cook for a longer amount of time. By keeping the skin on and not cutting them, the potatoes cook thoroughly while remaining firm. If you would rather use diced potatoes, go with a waxy potato like Yukon gold potatoes or even red potatoes. Russets will get too soggy and are better for mashing.

  • Why is my stew meat tough in Instant Pot?

If your stew meat isnt tender, you probably just didnt cook it long enough. Tougher cuts of meat like chuck and round steak need to cook longer than more tender meat like sirloin. For this beef stew, you cook the beef first before adding the vegetables. This ensures that the meat is cooked long enough that it will be nice and tender, but the vegetables wont get overcooked.

Why Dont You Cook The Potatoes And Carrots With The Meat

Theyd be mush! Potatoes cook really fast in the pressure cooker, so it doesnt add much time to cook them afterwards. Plus, the meat benefits from having a little time to rest before you cut it.

I also chose to make it this way because cooking the potatoes in the beef broth liquids will flavor potatoes. Since the liquid is already hot, it wont take long for the pot to return to pressure.

You can also double or even triple the amount of potatoesas long as theyre about the same sizewithout changing the high pressure cook time.

If you really want to cook the potatoes with the meat, some PCT readers like to wrap the potatoes and carrots tightly in aluminum foil and set the foil packet on top of the meat to cook. The foil slows the cook time.

A Note On The Original Recipe

    • Grandmas pot roast calls for a 6-ounce can of V8 juice as the cooking liquid. Since I suspect most of us dont drink V8 on the reg like she and Grandpa did, I swapped it for regular tomato juice and upped the seasonings slightly to compensate.
    • I added extra liquid to make sure the pressure cooker didnt trigger a burn warning. I recommend adding ½ cup of liquid to the Instant Pot for a roast.

Typically you need at least 1 cup of liquid in the Instant Pot the remaining ½ cup comes from the juices released by the chuck roast and the tomato sauce.

How Do I Remove The Silver Skin From My Chuck Roast

So Fast And Delicious! Instant Pot Chuck Roast

If left on, the silver skin can make your roast tough and prevent the seasoning from penetrating, so you want to take the time to properly remove it. To do that, use a sharp knife and slip it under the skin to create a tab or flap that you can grab. Using that tab, pull gently on it while using your knife to cut away the silver skin.
