Hello hello! I am so pleased to introduce you to my all-time FAVORITE way to make pasta: Easy Instant Pot Pasta. Cozy up. Get to know one another. I think youll be fast friends!

Really, guys, making pasta in the Instant Pot has been an absolute game changer. It comes out perfectly EVERY time and you can customize this recipe to work with whatever youre craving or, better yet, whatever you have in the kitchen! A real weeknight wonder.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Pasta In An Instant Pot

To make Instant Pot pasta I follow this simple rule:Take the time mentioned on the box of pasta, halve the time mentioned on the box, and then reduce that by 1. This gives you the time needed to cook the pasta in the Instant Pot.

For example, I made this pasta recipe using penne which called for 11 minutes of cooking time. Halve it , reduce that by 1, which makes it 4.5 minutes going by the rule above. Round that off to the next number ie, 5 minutes. Cook the penne pasta for 5 minutes!

It’s not hard to cook pasta on the stovetop, but cooking pasta in a pressure cooker does have a couple of benefits that might just make it worthwhile for you.

Why Cook Pasta in a Pressure Cooker?

Great question! We all know that cooking pasta on the stovetop is an easy task , but it does require that you pay attention. Pasta has a tendency to foam as it boils and every home cooks has cleaned up after a starchy pasta boil over at some point in their cooking life. When you cook pasta in a pressure cooker, you dont have to watch it or monitor the heat underneath the pot. It cooks quickly and unattended in a pressure cooker. Also, you can cook pasta directlyin a sauce in a pressure cooker, which saves you having to do one more step in a recipe and one more pot to clean up.;

I would be remiss if I didnt tell you, however, that there are disadvantages to pressure cooking pasta. With the lid locked onto the cooker, you wont have the ability to check the progress of the pasta to know definitively when it is cooked to you liking. That said, you can get pretty close if you follow the instructions and tips below.;

How to Cook Plain Pasta in a Pressure Cooker

1 cup of dried pasta + 1 cup liquid + ½ teaspoon salt + 1 teaspoon fat

Its important to understand that when you are pressure cooking, liquid means water or stock. Strained or puréed tomatoes or marinara sauce does NOT count as liquid.;

What Pressure Release Method to Use for Pasta

1 cup of pasta + pasta sauce + ½ cup liquid

A few years ago, I shared my Skillet Cheeseburger Pasta recipe. I thought it would be a perfect recipe to recreate in the Instant Pot and make it even faster. The ingredients for this meal are my all time pantry and freezer staples already, so its a meal I can cook anytime I want something easy or didnt meal plan.

Sautéing the ground beef with onions and garlic is really easy, but that is the most time consuming part of the recipe, so you can imagine how ridiculously simple it is to put it together. The combination of the ground beef, aromatic onion and garlic, dry and fresh herbs and the cheesy pasta is so satisfying and hearty. Its like Macaroni and Cheese with beef, or homemade Hamburger Helper, but way better:).

How Much Liquid Do You Need To Cook Instant Pot Pasta

Instant Pot Spaghetti

A general rule of thumb for cooking Instant Pot pasta is to use;four cups of liquid for every pound of pasta. Your dried pasta should be covered in the liquid – the liquid can be simply water, or tomato sauce, or dairy-based.

When in doubt, just ensure that the pasta is just about submerged under the liquid, and you should be good!

How To Reduce Foam When Making Pasta In The Instant Pot

You know how when youre boiling pasta on the stove top, youll see a foamy bunch of bubbles forming at the top of your pot?; Often this is what bubbles over and makes a mess.

Well, the same thing happens even when youre cooking pasta in the Instant Pot.; This is because starchy foods tend to foam when theyre cooking.

Ordinarily, when youre pressure cooking starchy foods, I recommend doing a natural release of pressure to allow the foam to subside.; But because pasta can so easily become overcooked, the natural release isnt the best choice.

This is why I tend to recommend using the intermittent release or slow release in many cases.

However, you can also add a little bit of fat to the water before cooking, which helps to decrease the foaming.; Adding a pat of butter or a bit of oil can be useful in this instance.;

How Long Should I Cook Pasta In An Instant Pot

The rule of thumb for pasta cooking time is half the cook time specified on box directions minus 1 minute. For example, if the box directions say cook for 12 minute for al dante, then you need to set the Instant Pot for 5 minutes .

However, if your pasta is on a thicker side, like rigatoni, or manicotti, then I suggest simply half the cook time on the box direction.

And always do a quick pressure release, when cooking pasta in Instant Pot. Because if you let Instant Pot release pressure naturally, itll continue to cook the pasta and youll end up with a mush.;

NOTE: Ive seen some people experience with too much foam spitting out during quick pressure release. ;But Ive heard that it also depends on brand of pasta.;

How To Make Spaghetti In An Instant Pot

Cooking the noodles at the same time as the sauce make this recipe super fast and easy. All the work in one pot means less mess. More time to do the things you love and still put a hearty meal on the table.

  • Sauté: Set a 6 quart instant pot to sauté. Add the olive oil, ground beef, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Cook and crumble until no longer pink.
  • Add: Break the noodles in half. Layer them in a criss-cross pattern so they do not stick as it cooks.
  • Pour: Pour the marinara and water on top of the noodles.
  • Cook: Cook on high pressure for 5-7 minutes. Use the quick release and wait for cycle to complete before unlocking. Stir together and serve with parmesan and chopped basil.
  • How To Limit Foaming

    Easy pasta sauce made in an Instant Pot

    If youre worried about the foaming, the best way to reduce foam is by adding cooking fat. You can add oil or butter to the pasta and water.;

    Or if youre making a meat sauce, sauté ground beef or chicken in the pressure cooking pot as a first step. Remove the meat from the pot before adding the pasta and water.;

    Also, note that some brands foam more than others. If youre having trouble with foaming, consider switching brands and see if that helps.

    Modifications For An 8

    I rarely use my 8-quart Instant Pot because it takes longer to come to pressure, and I dont need to cook for more than 4 people in my house. However, if youre looking to make larger portions and have the larger Instant Pot, Id try lowering the cooking time by 1 minute to see how your pasta turns out.

    Since it takes longer for the 8-quart Instant Pot to come to pressure, your food will be inside cooking longer than a smaller pot would. This means that gluten-free pasta will cook longer than it would if you were cooking it in the 6-quart pot. Since you cant set the timer any lower than zero minutes, you might try releasing the pressure after 5 minutes of natural release to see if that helps prevent your gluten-free noodles from over-cooking.

    The Most Important Step Add Liquid

    No matter what youre using the pot-in-pot method for, dont forget to add liquid to the bottom of the pot. If youre cooking a saucy dish in the bottom at the same time, this should already be covered. If you are only cooking something in the elevated pot, be sure that you add water to the pot first. Otherwise, you will get the burn message as the pot heats up.

    How To Fix Excess Foam Issue

    • Dont use any dairy as cooking liquid for cooking pasta in Instant Pot. If youre making a creamy pasta, like chicken alfredo pasta, add milk/cheese after the pasta is done.
    • Add just enough water to barely cover the pasta.
    • Add a tablespoon or so olive oil. Fat helps to reduce foaming.
    • Dont fill the pot over half way mark when cooking pasta. Instant Pot users manual suggests not filling the pot more than half way when cooking food that expand in volume.;

    How To Cook Dried Tortellini In The Instant Pot

    If you are cooking shelf-stable, dried tortellini in the Instant Pot, I recommend taking the cook time listed on the package and dividing it by two, then subtracting 1. The resulting number is the cook time at high pressure.

    With dried tortellini, you will need more liquid. Youll want to ensure the pasta is completely covered with water .


    How Much Water To Use

    The ratio of pasta-to-liquid is approximately 1:2. This can be water, clear broth, milk, whatever you desire. The breakdown goes as follows:

    • 8 oz. pasta + 2 cups liquid
    • 12 oz. pasta + 3 cups liquid
    • 16 oz. pasta + 4 cups liquid

    Note: Feel free to disregard this ratio if cooking pasta in a lot of liquid or sauce, such as the case for soups and chilis. Simply follow the cooking times as mentioned above.

    How To Reduce Pasta Foam

    I’ve learned some great tips and tricks from all of you in the comments below, here is a summary of the knowledge I’ve gathered over time:

    • Add Fat
    • Oil or butter will reduce foaming.; I add about 1 tablespoon per 8 ounces of pasta
  • Rinse pasta
  • Rinse the pasta 2 3 times before you cook it I wouldn’t say this is the perfect solution, but it does seem to help
  • Place a trivet over the pasta
  • As bubbles start to rise, the trivet will pop them and keep foam from reaching the valve.; This doesn’t work perfectly every time either, but again, it seems to help especially if you use a slow pressure release
  • Intermittent Pressure Release
  • Turn knob to quickly release the pressure.; If starchy water starts to spray through the valve, switch the knob to a sealed position, wait 30 seconds, then switch the valve back to release, repeating this process as many times as needed usually 2 -3 times
  • Slow Pressure Release
  • Turn the knob only slightly so the pressure is released slowly.; This will take a bit longer but will cut down on foaming considerably and prevent overcooked pasta
  • My personal go-to method
  • Add fat, place a trivet over the pasta, use a quick release of the pressure and wait and see if there is going to be enough starchy water spraying out for me to want to close the knob again.; Then I use the intermittent or slow-release method to release the remaining pressure.
  • Cooking Pasta In The Instant Pot

    Instant Pot Spaghetti (with or without meat!) | How to Cook Spaghetti in the Pressure Cooker

    Cooking pasta in its own sauce is the best way to create the most delicious, silky sauce because as pasta cooks it releases starch into the sauce and rather than pouring all that starch down the drain with the pasta water, using the pastas own starch to create a thick and velvety sauce is absolute perfection. As this Instant Pot Sausage Pasta cooks the Instant Pot does all the work and leaves you with perfectly cooked pasta in a thick, rich, meaty sauce thats SO delicious.

    Instant Pot Pasta Sauce

    Unless Im following a specific recipe, I prefer to cook the pasta in water and cook the sauce pot-in-pot above the pasta.;

    However, you can cook pasta in a sauce. If you do this, it is SO IMPORTANT to add enough liquid to the pot. Many jarred sauces include thickeners, which can create a film on the bottom of the cooking pot that will change how your pasta cooks and may lead to a Burn notice.

    If the sauce is thin when you remove the lid after pressure cooking, turn off the Instant Pot. The pasta will continue to absorb liquid as it cools.;

    If the sauce has far too much liquid, select Sauté and simmer the pasta until the sauce is somewhat thickened.

    Can You Cook Pasta In The Instant Pot With Just Water

    While you can probably cook the pasta with just water, you may actually have the pasta stick to the pot and each other as the liquid decreases in the pressure cooker. This is why you will want to use the minimum for the best results for cooking pasta in the Instant Pot

    • Water – Chicken broth can be substituted to add more flavor to the pasta
    • Butter
    • Better than Bouillon if you are not using broth

    How To Make Sausage Pasta In The Instant Pot

    Making Instant Pot Sausage Pasta is SO easy! Use my PRO TIPS for the perfect Instant Pot Pasta every time!

  • Sauté the Italian Sausage first. Cooking the sausage first makes for a short pressure cooking time and it creates amazing flavour!
  • Deglaze the pan to prevent burning. If you want to avoid that dreaded burn notice, deglaze the pan with a splash of stock and scrape up any caramelized bits before pressure cooking.
  • Layer the liquid and the noodles. Before pressure cooking, remove the sausage and veggies and layer with the liquid and noodles until everything is added.
  • Do NOT stir before cooking! Resist the urge to stir before cooking. Stirring makes the noodles clump up and causes the noodles to sink to the bottom where theyll burn. For even cooking, cook the ingredients in layers and wait until after the pressure is released to stir.
  • Cook on High Pressure for 7 minutes. The noodles only need 7 minutes to cook to al dente and absorb the liquid!
  • Quick Release. Release the pressure manually. If you let the pressure release naturally the noodles will be WAY over-cooked.
  • Stir well while its hot. Add the Parmesan cheese and use a pair of tongs to toss the cooked noodles in the sauce. This will help any noodles clumped together to become unstuck, and it will distribute the noodles and the sauce evenly throughout the pot for easy serving.
