Problem : The Lid Won’t Shut

10 things NOT to do with your Instant Pot — Instant Pot Tips

No matter how much you fight it, the darn lid just won’t close.

The fix: Check the float valve , that small metal button near the release valve. If it’s up, push it down. The button has to be down for the lid to open or close.

If that doesn’t work, check that the seal in the right spot. It should be tucked in close to the edge of the lid.

The Pot Is Getting Streaky Or Cloudy

If you spotted streaks or clouds inside your pot after your first couple of uses, thats normal. Fats and oils tend to cause stainless steel to stain a bit . Fortunately, those stains wont affect your cooking at all, but they could be difficult to remove when hand washing. The pot is dishwasher safe, so try running it with your other kitchenware to remove streaks and smudges. Another solution is to mix a bit of vinegar on the residue to bring back the pots original shine.

Differences In Design Between The Lux And Duo Instant Pots

I feel like these are important to note because I would have liked to have known before purchasing.

  • The DUO I received requires a three-prong outlet, while the LUX I have is a two-prong appliance.
  • The DUO has slots on either side above the handles to prop the lid up. The LUX does not have an option, leaving you to have to find a place to set the lid.
  • The LUX does not have a condensation cup like the DUO does. Its neither good nor bad, but I feel like its something else I could lose.
  • There are fewer accessories for the 8qt DUO on Amaon like the silicone cover and tempered glass lid because its diameter is larger than the 6qt DUO and LUX. Some can be found other places, but since I do a lot of Amazon ordering I like the free 2-day shipping.

The Instant Pot Display Wont Turn On

Most display issues are often the direct result of a power problem. One quick way to try and fix your display is to make sure the power cord is fully plugged into your Instant Pot. If you previously tried this and the screen still wouldnt turn on, you should try to plug your Instant Pot into a separate outlet entirely. If youre still unsuccessful, contact Instant Pot support.

I Cant Figure Out The Timer

This is a very common issue when first using the Instant Pot, and there are a couple of guidelines you really need to know to avoid mistakes or problems.

Selecting an option like poultry will automatically create a timer, which you then adjust to the proper time with the + and buttons below the timer screen. Remember that the timer does not include how long it takes the Instant Pot to heat up or cool down. Its designed to only be the time that the food inside is actively pressure cooking. Therefore, your Instant Pot will take time to reach pressure anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, usually, but it depends on the initial temperature of the ingredients, the amount of the ingredients, and the type of ingredients. It will also take time to release pressure, especially if the recipe calls for a natural pressure release, which often takes another 10 to 20 minutes. Remember to include all this time in your cooking calculations.

Make Sure The Silicone Sealing Ring Is In The Lid

You want to make sure that the sealing ring is properly placed in the lid before cooking. It is responsible for sealing the lid to lock in the steam pressure. I store mine in labelled Ziploc bags right next to my Instant Pot so that I see them. I purchased a second Instant Pot sealing ring so that I could designate one for savoury and one for sweet recipes.

How To Quick Release Instant Pot

If you need to release the pressure quickly, you can perform a quick release function on the Instant Pot.

To perform a quick-release on the Instant Pot, switch the valve handle located on the top of the unit to Venting. Be careful when doing this as the built-up steam will immediately shoot out the top. Just stay clear of the lid.

Normally, you will allow the pressure cooker to cool on its own, but there may be some reasons for you to do a quick release. Either you want the cooking to quickly stop or the recipe calls for the quick release to be performed.

Using the quick release is safe but be sure to stand away from the lid as the steam is scalding and will burn if it is in contact with your skin.

Recipes For The Air Frying Setting

How to Use an Instant Pot – Instant Pot 101 – Beginner? Start HERE!

Not much information on air frying. No information on how long to air fry different foods is provided in the Getting Started Guide.

Even in the online user manual, they have detailed charts for pressure cooking and sous vide, but very little about air frying. The link the user manual refers to doesnt currently have any Air Frying recipes either.

I tried my Garlic Parmesan Air Fryer French Fries in the Duo Crisp, and they turned out great!

I also reheated frozen chicken nuggets for the grandkids. In 9 minutes, the outsides were crispy, the meat was still juicy, and everyone was happy. It was so easy!

My friend Urvashi also has written a great Air Fryer cookbook. I love to try her Instant Pot recipes, and Ive flagged several to try in the Duo Crisp.

I Keep Burning My Fingers When Trying To Release Steam

The release nozzle on the Pots valve is pretty loose, and twitching it open for a fast release after pressure cooking can be painful for even fast fingers. If youve been burnt by steam before, theres a very simple solution that Pot users have found: Just use a wooden spoon. Push the valve open with the spoon to release it and avoid any steam issues.

Check The Instant Pot Is Plugged In And Clear From Obstructions

Simply double-check your unit is plugged in all the way and sitting on the counter away from other objects. You want to know it is receiving proper power.

If you still experience issues with your Instant Pot after following all these steps, it is time to reach out to customer support for service.

The Float Valve Is Stuck

That little float valve on the top of the lid is meant to loosely move between venting and natural pressure release. If this valve gets jammed, theres a problem. It usually means that the valve has become clogged with food. Unclog the valve, and then wash the lid all around the valve and make sure all bits of food are removed.

The Pressure Cooker Is Not Sealing Properly

If the pressure cooker is not sealing, you may see steam escaping from the sides around the lid. This escaping steam prevents enough pressure to build up, and your food wont cook properly.

Note: During initial pressurizing, it is normal to see a little steam escaping from the valve or sides. If you have a manual valve, make sure it is set to Sealing and not venting.

How to get the pressure cooker to seal properly?

If the cooker wont come to pressure, you will need to check the seal around the lid.

  • Is the seal ring in place? Make sure you didnt forget to replace the silicone seal ring on the cooker.
  • Ensure the seal ring is seated properly, it should look even all the way around the cooker.
  • Dirty seal ring? This can cause pressure issues, use a clean seal ring.

Replace the seal ring every 12 months on average as they do wear out. Buy quality rings.

Note: Seal rings can transfer odors from food to food. Use multiple colors of seal rings to go with different types of food to prevent cross odors.

Important Functions And Buttons On Your Pressure Cooker

Your Instant Pot is really well designed and the buttons on it will help you cook your food better. So the sensors that know how hot certain food should and need to get will even help not burn or overcook the food youre trying to serve up.

While its not fool proof and youre still in control of the time and eve if you send it through another cycle, its got so many wonderful safety features and programmed cooking features.

Keep Warm/Cancel This will cancel any program that has been set and puts the cooker in standby. When the cooker is in standby, pressing this key will activate the keep-warm program and can last to almost 100 hours.

Porridge This is for making porridge or oatmeal of various grains. The default for this setting is high pressure for 20 minutes. **DO NOT use quick release for this setting, it will result in a mess** This setting should only be used with the pressure valve set to SEALING.

Mistake #: Did Not Deglaze Inner Pot Bottom

Instant Pot is awesome for allowing users to saute directly in the inner pot.

Take note that after sauteing, there will be some brown bits stuck to the the bottom of the pot. Dont worry! These are not burnt food debris.

However, when users dont fully scrub these flavorful brown bits off the pot before pressure cooking, itll trigger Instant Pot to think the food content inside is burnt.

I Am Pressure Cooking But Steam Is Leaking Out

52 things you need to know about your Instant Pot

Is steam leaking out of the pressure valve, even when turned to the upper locked position? Its normal for a small amount of steam to leak from the valve while the pot is heating up, but if it continues to leak steam during the pressure cooking cycle, you may have a problem. This could be a sign that you need to clean out and reposition the valve. If this doesnt work, you may even need to replace the valve.

If steam is seeping out the sides, make sure the lid is properly locked for pressure cooking. If the lid seems to be fine, examine your sealing ring. A stretched or cracked ring should be replaced. If the ring has become dislodged, you can usually put it back into place without trouble. A loose ring can firm up if you put it in the freezer for a little while, but this will ultimately hasten the silicone decay, so you should plan on getting a new ring either way.

Does The Instant Pot Saut As Well As A Pan On The Stove

In my experience, the Instant Pot does not sauté quite as well as a pan on the stove. But I still use the sauté function almost every time that I use my Instant Pot. Why? It works well enough, and it is extremely convenient.

You can expect that it will take a little longer to brown meats or stir fry vegetables in your Instant Pot, compared to cooking on the stove. Not having to wash a second pot and transfer food between pots makes this small inconvenience well worth it for me.

Learn The Instant Pot Acronyms

You will notice a variety of acronyms being used in recipes or in groups and forums online. To help you make sense of it all, here are a few common acronyms and their meanings.

  • IP = Instant Pot
  • NR = Natural Release or Natural Pressure Release
  • QR = Quick Release or Quick Pressure Release
  • 5-5-5 = common instructions for cooking hard boiled eggs .
  • HP = High Pressure

Other Instapot Duo Gourmet Error Codes

The other error codes are quite rare:

C1, C2, C6, C6H, C6L: These five errors dont specify what exactly is wrong, just that your Instant Pot may have a faulty sensor and that youll need to contact customer support at 1-800-828-7280 or support @ instantpot.com.

C5 indicates that the cooking pot is not quite in place or that there is no water in the inner cooking pot.

C7 or NoPr indicates that the heat element has failed, there is not enough liquid, or the quick release switch is in the vent position. If you get the error, check the release valve and make sure there is the minimum amount of liquid required for pressure . If those arent the problem, contact Customer Support.

Lid indicates that the lid is not correctly positioned. Simply open the lid and replace it, ensuring it is properly placed. (Note: Dont use the lid with the saute setting.

PrSE indicates that pressure has accumulated during a non-pressure cooking program. You will want to use the quick release vent to reduce pressure in the pot.

Disclosure: I purchased an Instant Pot Duo Gourmet to review. As always, my opinion is always my own.

Problem : The Screen Says Ovht

Your Instant Pot stopped cooking and has a weird Ovht code on the screen.

The fix: Ovht stands for “overheat.” This means that more than likely, your food is burning inside the locked pot. The code “C5” on the screen is also an indication that your pot is too hot.

Quickly release pressure until the float valve goes down and remove the inner pot. Chances are you didn’t put enough water or other liquids in the pot, which caused everything to overheat and burn. Next time, closely follow the recipe’s directions for how much liquid to add to the ingredients.

Why Does My Instant Pot Says Burn

The challenge with using Instant Pot is that food sits at the bottom of the pot and you cant stir the food as it builds up pressure. Therefore, there are rules to follow to prevent you from burning food in Instant Pot!

Here are the 7 common reasons that trigger the Instant Pot Burn Message:

  • Not enough liquid in the Instant Pot.
  • The liquid in Instant Pot is too thick.
  • Pressure cook cream of milk directly in the Instant Pot.
  • Did not deglaze the bottom of the inner pot.
  • Forgot to turn the venting knob to sealing position.
  • Steam is leaking from the silicone sealing ring.
  • Objects are stuck under the inner pot above the heating element.
