Yes, it replaces your slow cooker and you can make yogurt in it but its real claim to fame is as an electric pressure cooker that can significantly shorten cooking time. Imagine braised short ribs in under an hour, or homemade pho in 30 minutes. The best part is that you can just set the timer and walk away, without having to tend to it like you would a stovetop version. It’s been over two years since I purchased my Instant Pot Ultra, and it remains one of my favorite kitchen appliances.
That said, I found myself lusting after yet another trendy kitchen appliance: the air fryer. The idea behind it is that it can “fry” foods with just hot air and without the oily mess that deep-frying entails. However, as publications like Wirecutter and Cook’s Illustrated point out, air fryers are nothing more than re-packaged convection ovens. If you do want crispy “air-fried” foods, Wirecutter recommends getting a countertop convection oven instead, which obviously has a lot more features than just air frying.
Setup Process: Set It On Top And Go
To operate the air fryer lid, it just needs to be placed on top of the Instant Pot and plugged in. The air fryer plug has a shield affixed to it that makes it impossible to plug it into an outlet next to another plug. How The Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid Works
If youre used to Instant Pots multi-cookers, cooking with this lid will feel pretty comfortable. It doesnt lock onto the base like the pressure-cooking lid, but you will still get the same musical alert when it is placed on the base correctly. When cooking you wont be able to see into the base of the pot, but you are able to take the lid off to check on the progress of your food mid-way through. The lid is a little heavy , so you dont have to worry about it moving around during cooking. Its important to note that you cannot turn on the air fryer lid and Instant Pot base at the same time . Temperature, time and cooking features are all programmed through the lid. Make sure you have a stainless steel inner pot to place the air fryer basket into the air fryer lid is not compatible with a nonstick ceramic insert.

To be fair, this is my complaint with most air fryers, but there are some air fryers and toaster ovens with air fry capabilities that can fit larger amounts. We are a family of 2, so it works ok for us for most applications, but if you are a family of 4 or more, or enjoy making large portions for leftovers, youll have to cook your food in multiple batches which is a pain really defeats the purpose of air frying!

Is The Mealthy Crisplid A Good Alternative
I recommend the Instant Pot air fryer lid over the Mealthy Crisp lid, mainly because the lid serves more as a broiler than an air fryer because it doesnt circulate air a well as the Instant Pot lid. This means your food will take a little longer to cook. Plus, I feel its best to stick with appliances made by the same manufacturer. However, the Mealthy Crisp Lid does fit 8-quart Instant Pots, so this is a great choice if you have a pot you already love and want to upgrade!

Is It Safe To Use An Air Fryer Without The Basket
Many people have been asking about whether its safe to cook food without using the basket provided with their air fryer.
This is an interesting question, since many of the food manufacturers who make air fryers advise against cooking without the basket.
However, there is nothing to stop you using your air fryer without the basket. You can air fry without a basketbut it does not mean that you will get the results you hoped for.
Now Let’s Look At The Functions That Use The Air Fryer Lid
Air-Fry: The temperature range you can select goes from 180° F to 400° F and the default temp is 400° F. The minimum time is 1 minute and the maximum time you can set is 1 hour. It defaults to 18 minutes. There is a message that comes on the screen prompting you to turn your food, if you ignore this it goes away after about 10 seconds.
Roast: The temperature range you can select goes from 180° F to 400° F and the default temp is 380° F. The minimum time is 1 minute and the maximum time you can set is 1 hour. It defaults to 40 minutes.
Bake: The temperature range you can select goes from 180° F to 400° F and the default temp is 365° F. The minimum time is 1 minute and the maximum time you can set is 1 hour. It defaults to 30 minutes.
I do like the lower temp setting of 180° F on these functions on the Duo Crisp. The Ninja Foodi’s lowest setting is 200° F on bake/roast. So, there is a slight advantage that the Duo Crisp has with these settings, although I’m not sure how often you would need to use that low of a temperature.
*It is unknown, to me at least, if there is any difference between these functions. Based on my experience with the Ninja Foodi, I would guess that they all cook exactly the same and the only difference is based on the temperature you set. I would love to get clarification on this both from Instant Pot and Ninja Foodi, but to date I have not been able to.

Lets start with the basics: What the heck is an Instant Pot and how does an air fryer work?
An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker and multicooker, while an air fryer is a countertop convection over that essentially fries your food with super hot air and a little oil.
You can use both the air fryer and the Instant Pot to prep some of the same foods, but generally speaking, air fryers are better used for foods you want to crisp or dry out, like healthier versions of French fries, fried chicken, or apple crisps, says Krista Maguire, RD, CSSD, Nutrition Manager at Beachbody.
An Instant Pot is best used for dishes with liquid, like soups and stews, chili, grains, casseroles, and one-pot dishes, she explains.

Setting Up The Instant Pot With Air Fryer Lid
Setting up the Instant Pot with the Air Fryer lid is actually pretty easy. First, locate the slots on the base unit. Place the air fryer lid on the base unit in such a way that the fins go into the slots. Push down gently so that the power units on both- the base unit and the lid come in contact with each other. When this is done correctly, you will hear a chime.
To open the lid, just gently lift it up, and then place it face side down on a protective pad until it has completely cooled down.
Air Fryer Sweet Potatoe Fries
This was the food item that I really want to perfect. I air-fried at 400 F for 15 min. I would suggest experimenting with this temperature and time. I found mine to be dry, not crisp.
I used fresh raw sweet potatoes and first coated them with corn starch, then put coconut oil, cinnamon, salt, brown sugar, and cayenne to the mixture. Next time I would try olive oil instead of coconut oil or maybe use frozen packaged fries instead of raw.
The rotisserie basket was a definite selling point for this air fryer compared to any other on the market. Its important to read the manual to see that there is a red button on the side that lets you install the basket inside. It also releases the basket, but dont worry after the cooking cycle, the red button is warm but not hot to touch.
When you use the basket, you have to select Rotate on the touch screen to start the rotation. I notice it holds a lot but if you fill it too much it wont be able to complete a rotation because of the weight. Also, theres a rotisserie fetch tool that makes it easy to handle the basket, but still wear a glove on opposite hand when you try to place and open the basket on a heat resistant surface. Again, I used a baking tray.
