- Consistent:; Cooking rice on the stove top can vary so much that its hard to get consistent results every time. Depending on how your lid fits, the size of the pot and your heating element you make never get the same result twice.
- Steady Results: The instant pot is consistent because there is no water lost through evaporation. The heat source is always consistent and the time and setting is the time every time.
- Natural release: When the rice is done cooking, leave the rice undisturbed and the pressure will naturally begin to release. After about 15 minutes you can manually release the remaining pressure before opening it.

How To Cook Brown Rice In Instant Pot
Unlike white rice, the brown rice has its grain husk intact, which takes longer to cook. Using the Instant Pot to cook brown rice really speeds up the process.
Rinse 1 cup of brown rice once under cold water . Add brown rice to the pot together with 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon of salt or the same amount of stock without salt. If cooking 2 cups of rice, add 2.25 cups of water and or stock.;
Set to Manual/Pressure Cook for 22 minutes on HIGH with 10 minutes natural pressure release , and then use the quick release. Total time is about 35 minutes.;

Naturally, you will need to adjust the cooking time and amount of water youll be using depending on the appliance you have in your kitchen.
How To Make White Rice:
So simple youll memorize this easily.
- Rinse:;Use a fine mesh strainer to thoroughly rinse the rice. I often use my hand to move the rice around and make sure it all gets rinsed.
- Cook:;Combine rice, water, butter and salt in Instant pot. Lock the lid and secure the vent and cook on high for 5 minutes
- Release:;Let the pressure release naturally. Carefully remove the lid and fluff with a fork.

How Long Does White Rice Take In The Instant Pot
White rice cooks in just a 4 minute pressure cooking cycle. Keep in mind, that it typically takes up to 10 minutes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure, and youll wait another 10 minutes for the pressure to naturally release, so this could take 24 minutes in total but most of that time is completely hands off!
The benefit of cooking Instant Pot white rice is that you dont have to wait for water to come to a boil on the stove, and you dont have to watch the rice as it cooks to make sure it doesnt stick to the pot. If you forget about your rice while youre doing something else in the kitchen, it will still turn out perfectly because the Instant Pot switches to a keep warm setting when its done.

Minute Instant Rice In A Recipe That Calls For Regular Rice

Why Is My Rice Dry
If your rice is dry, the ratio of rice to water is off and theres not enough water. When youre experimenting with different kinds of rice, keep this in mind! Different kinds of rice absorb different amounts of water.
Another reason why your rice could be dry is if you leave it in the Instant Pot too long after cooking.
The keep warm mode will continue to heat the rice at a low temperature. This can occasionally dry out or burn the rice if you leave it too long.
How Much Rice Can You Put In The Instant Pot
Its important that you never fill your inner pot past the half-way mark when cooking rice. This includes rice and water together, so how much rice you can cook in the Instant Pot will vary by the size of your machine.
In the printable recipe below, youll cook just 1 cup of dry rice, but you can double or triple this amount based on what you need and the size of your machine. Youll always use a 1:1 ratio of rinsed white rice to water, so if you need to cook 3 cups of dry rice, youll use 3 cups of water.
Heres how much rice you can put in the Instant Pot:
- 3-quart: up to 2 cups dry rice
- 6-quart: up to 4 cups dry rice
- 8-quart: up to 5 cups dry rice
Keep in mind that these amounts are all theoretical, because Ive never needed to make this much rice in a single day. These estimates are based on simple math equations.
Assuming that a 6-quart machine holds 24 cups, and you dont want to fill the machine more than halfway full, you wont want to make more than 12 cups of cooked rice in a single cooking cycle.
One cup of dry ricemakes roughly 3 cups of cooked rice, so 4 cups of dry rice makes roughly 12 cups of cooked rice. I always round down to be on the safe side, so you wont risk clogging your machine.

- Softer Rice: If you enjoy softer rice, increase the;liquid amount rather than cooking time.
- Rinsing the Rice:;If youre rinsing the rice, itll throw off the rice-to-water ratio. So, be sure to;reduce 3 tablespoons of water from the 1 cup of water stated in the recipe.
Best Cooking Time For Instant Pot Rice
The amount of water will remain the same. Different kinds of rice, however, take different amounts of time to cook under pressure. Wild rice and brown rice will require more time than white rice, for instance. Any variety can be cooked at either high or low pressure; it comes out a little fluffier at low pressure, and a little chewier at high pressure.
Although you can cook any variety of rice on the automatic rice setting, brown rice works better on either a manual setting, or a setting thats specifically designed for whole grains, such as the Multigrain setting on the Instant Pot.
Here are my preferred cooking times for rice in the pressure cooker:
- Brown rice: 20 minutes on high pressure for firm rice, or 22 minutes for softer grains
- White rice: 15 minutes on low pressure for firm rice, or 17 minutes for softer grains

How To Make Sticky Rice In The Instant Pot

This recipe uses the pot-in-pot method. Water is placed in the inner pot, followed by a trivet and then a cake pan holding the ingredients – in this case, the rice and water.
The pot-in-pot method produces steam and this – along with the water in the cake pan – is how the rice comes out so perfectly.
My version of this recipe uses freshly boiled water – instead of room temperature water – for the inner pot, to speed up the whole process of bringing everything to pressure. It really does cut down on the overall cook time. Using 2 cups instead of 1 cup of freshly boiled water also seems to produce more steam.
For 1 cup/200g of dry rice, we use cup + 2 teaspoons of water in the cake pan with the rice and cook for 10 minutes at high pressure, followed by 6 minutes of natural release.
For 2 cups/400g of dry rice, we use 1 cups + 4 teaspoons water in the cake pan and cook for 20 minutes, followed by 6 minutes of natural release.
Does Rice Have To Be Rinsed Before Cooking
Opinions vary widely and there seems to be no right or wrong answer. Its all up to personal preference. However, thankfully it is irrelevant for the cooking times presented.
Both rinsed and dry rice work with my cooking times and method. Nothing has to be adjusted or changed either way. Just make sure you drain your rice well if you rinse it. Then use 1:1 ratio.

Yogurt Making Sauting And Other Uses
True to its name, the multicooker can do more than just pressure cook and slow cook. Depending on your model, it may also feature several settings for preparing yogurt, rice or poultry, as well as sautéeing.
How you use this function will vary based on the recipe and your model. Most yogurt functions will heat the pot at 180 degrees to 200 degrees,;which kills any errant bacteria in the milk, and helps the yogurt to thicken. Then it keeps the milk at 110 degrees for several hours, during which time it ferments.;Consult your manual for exact instructions.
The sauté function works like a burner on your stove, heating the inner pot from the bottom up, and allowing you to brown meats and vegetables, and to simmer sauces to reduce them.
The sauté function on most cookers has several levels, from low to high, allowing you to adjust the heat. If yours doesnt, and the food is turning too dark too quickly, turn off the machine for a few minutes to bring down the heat. Then, if necessary, turn it back on. Its not a perfect solution, but it works well enough. Or, you can always brown the ingredients on the stove in a skillet, then transfer them to the pot for the remainder of the cooking. Note that when sautéing, the multicookers lid should always be off.
Getting The Best Results
- I recommend using a round metal cake pan – I use a 20cm/8 inch non-stick pan, but a slightly smaller one will work too. Metal conducts heat the best, compared to glass for example.
- I haven’t tried this with a pan that isn’t non-stick – you may need to spray with oil or line with baking/parchment paper.
- Oven-safe Pyrex glass usually works as well, but needs an extra couple minutes of cook time as it doesn’t conduct heat as well. I have used a round glass Pyrex dish before, but I definitely prefer the metal cake pan and that’s what I recommend you use.
- Boiling the water that sits at the bottom of the inner pot brings everything to pressure much more quickly than room temperature water, but you can skip this if you like.
- Less water is used to cook this type of rice than other varieties, so don’t be alarmed if the amount of water doesn’t seem like it’s enough – it is!

Other Ways To Cook Rice:
- Rinse the rice in a strainer until the water is fairly clear.
- Place the rice, water, salt and butter into the Instant Pot.
- Close the lid, and set the steam release valve to the seal position.
- Either press the Rice button if your machine has one, of press with Manual or Pressure Cook depending on your machine, select HIGH, and use the + or buttons to adjust the cooking time. Turn off the Keep Warm button, if possible, which would cause the rice to overcook.
- When the time is up, all the pressure to naturally release . Make sure the Keep Warm setting is turned off. When the valve has dropped after the pressure has naturally released , open the Instant Pot, fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
Can I Freeze Cooked
Yes, you can freeze cooked Minute® Rice for up to 2 months. Place cooked and cooled Minute® Rice in a sealed container and freeze. To reheat, remove from freezer, sprinkle one tablespoon of water in container and microwave on HIGH, loosely covered for two minutes. Microwave ovens vary so reheating time is approximate and time might need to be adjusted.

Why Use Natural Pressure Release
Natural pressure release is the way to go when it comes to cooking rice in an instant pot. Think of this as settling time, similar to when you cook rice on the stove-top and allow it sit off of the burner with the lid cocked a bit.
I have found with trial and error that using only the QPR often results on wet rice or sticky rice. If you are in a rush and just cant wait the full natural pressure release, give it at least 5 to 7 minutes before hitting the quick release.

How Much Water Do You Put In A Pressure Cooker For Rice
Just like a rice cooker and an instant pot, the amount of water you add depends on what type of rice youre pressure cooking. Some rice, particularly short grain, needs less water than long grain rice, like jasmine rice. You also need to take into account the lack of evaporation when cooking in a pressure cooker.
In a rice cooker, water evaporates as the rice cooks, and the amount of water is set so that the lost water is compensated for. The situation is different when it comes to a pressure cooker. The lid completely seals the entire inner pot and subjects it to high heat and pressure, making the cooking time quicker than normal. Since theres a substantial lack of evaporation in the sealed environment, less water is needed.
