How Long To Pressure Cook Pasta

Instant Pot Penne Pasta with Sausage and Peppers ~ Pressure Cooker Recipe ~ Amy Learns to Cook

The general rule of thumb for Instant Pot pasta is to cook it for half the time recommended on the box. I usually cook most pastas for 4 minutes or 5 minutes if I want the pasta a little softer.

When the pasta is done, you may still have some water in the bottom. Just stir it well, and the pasta should absorb the water.

If there is still some water remaining, drain the pasta before serving.

Measure Ingredients And Determine Cook Time

  • 8 oz short whole wheat pasta
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

To determine the cook time for your particular shape, you first must check the instructions on the packaging.

Take the total number of minutes, divide that in half, and subtract two minutes. The final result is your total pressure cooking time, and this will yield an al dente texture.

For example, an 8-minute cook time described on the packaging would translate to a 2-minute cook time in your appliance.

If you find an odd number time, simply round up your final result to get a whole number. Therefore, a 9-minute cook time on the packaging would translate to 3-minute cook time in your appliance.

Tips For Cooking Pasta In The Instant Pot

    • Youll want to reference the pasta cooking instructions to help you gauge how long to cook for in the Instant Pot. For example, if you are cooking a macaroni-type pasta that normally takes 10 minutes on the stove, you will want to divide that in half and reduce by one minute .
    • Our quinoa macaroni cooks in 4-5 minutes on the stove top. For Instant Pot cooking purposes, we halved 4 minutes, and reduced by 1 minute .
    • We add a tiny bit of oil to prevent foaming this doesnt always work.. in fact, sometimes the oil can coat the pasta and will deter the sauce from sticking. It usually still foams, but not quite as much if I forget to add oil.
    • Add 1 tsp of salt for every 2-3 cups of water this, too can help with foaming in the Instant Pot.
    • When it comes to releasing the pressure, have patience. If you forget that you have pasta and walk away for too long, you will find yourself with a mushy mess. I always quick release, and throw a towel over the valve but even then, after a few seconds, all that foam can create a starchy nightmare to clean. So try releasing in short bursts.. a few seconds at a time, until the pressure has been exhausted.
    • Dont get overzealous and just force the pressure to release quickly because, well. I have, not a fun thing to clean up.
    • Once you are done, use the pasta immediately by adding your sauce. Or, drain and rinse in cool water to stop the cooking process.

But instant pot pasta isnt just another reason to employ that underused appliance in the kitchen. It comes with tons of pros, some of the best which will be discussed below

Its a One-Pot Meal: With an instant pot, the pasta cooks in with no need of draining. And once the recommended water quantity is used, the moisture combines with the starch to bring the recipe to the perfect doneness.

How To Fix Excess Foam Issue

    • Dont use any dairy as cooking liquid for cooking pasta in Instant Pot. If youre making a creamy pasta, like chicken alfredo pasta, add milk/cheese after the pasta is done.
    • Add just enough water to barely cover the pasta.
    • Add a tablespoon or so olive oil. Fat helps to reduce foaming.
    • Dont fill the pot over half way mark when cooking pasta. Instant Pot users manual suggests not filling the pot more than half way when cooking food that expand in volume.

    Use An Intermittent Pressure Release

Instant Pot Pasta Recipe – How To Cook Pasta In The Instant Pot – So Easy!

High-starch foods like potatoes and pasta frequently foam while pressure cooking. Usually, a long, slow natural pressure release is better to allow the foam to subside. However, pasta will easily overcook so you need a quick pressure release to keep it from going mushy.

Thats why youll use an intermittent release. Heres how to do it:

    • When the cook time ends, flip the pressure valve from Sealed to Venting. Allow the pressure to release until you see foam or large water droplets coming from the valve.
    • As soon as this happens, flip the switch back to Sealed and wait for 20 to 30 seconds. This will reduce the foam.
    • Flip back to Venting and repeat as necessary until all the pressure is released.

You should only need to do this once or twice.

    Calculating Cooking Time For Pasta

Check out the recommended cooking time on the packet of the pasta. Most pasta cooks in 8 to 12 minutes. Often, you will have a range, say 9-11 minutes in boiling water. Al dente means its cooked but still has a little firmness when you bite through it, so it maintains its structure without being too soft or mushy. Al dente is the Italian way!

To cook the pasta in the Instant Pot, you would divide its regular cooking time by 2 and deduct 1 extra minute. So it would be -1 minute=3.5 minutes at HIGH pressure followed by a quick release of the pressure. On average, 4-4.5 minutes should work for most types of pasta.

    • Add the dried penne pasta to the bottom of the Instant Pot. Pour the sauce over the pasta. Do not stir. Lock lid, and set to Pressure Cook for 5 minutes.
    • Quick release the steam, taking care not to put your hands or face near the steam valve.
    • Once steam has vented and the pressure valve has gone down, stir the pasta. It will continue to thicken for a few minutes.
    • Serve with a side of fresh garlic bread and too with nooch or parmesan cheese if desired. Enjoy!

Cooking Regular Pasta In A Pressure Cooker

When it comes to regular pasta, these are the basic steps:

  • Add dry pasta to the inner pot.
  • Add the liquid, salt and a little oil or butter and stir well.
  • Set the Instant Pot to Manual/Pressure Cook at HIGH pressure
  • Adjust the time to 3.5-5 minutes depending on the pasta type . Make sure the top valve is pointing to Sealing.
  • Instant Pot will take 5-7 minutes to build up the pressure, the timer will start.
  • Once the timer stops, move the top valve to Venting to release the pressure. This is called Quick Release. Some of the built-up foam in the liquid will squirt out together with the steam, this is normal for pasta. More on that below!
  • Dont leave the pressure to release naturally for too long as the pasta keeps cooking during this time. Thats why we do the quick release, usually.

Instant Pot Pasta recipes are my favorites! Its a super easy and hands-free way to cook simple, yet flavorful pasta. Finish with flavorful sauces, like aromatic pesto, or simple butter and parmesan cheese to make a nice side dish, or meatless dinner for a busy night.

One of my favorite things to cook in Instant Pot is pasta!

When I bought my first Instant Pot back in 2015, I thought Id cook mostly meat in it. You know, those melt-in-your-mouth tender roasts, pulled pork, etc. But nope, I cook pasta way more often than those meats. Who knew!

But theres a good reason for that!

Actually, therere more than one benefit to cooking pasta in an Instant Pot:

    • No need to wait for a big pot of water to boil.
    • Completely hands-off cooking, because you dont need to stir frequently and watch for boil-over.
    • Pasta cooked in an Instant Pot comes out way more flavorful
    • And you can keep the pasta warm a little longer while preparing other dishes for your dinner.

Cooking plain pasta in the Instant Pot is as simple as adding your dry pasta, water, and kosher salt to the pot, pushing a button, and then walking away until its done!

NO stirring so the pasta doesnt stick, NO watching to make sure it doesnt boil over, and NO constantly checking to see if its perfectly al dente yet In fact, you dont even have to drain the pasta when its done, since most of the water is absorbed during the pressure cooking process.

1| Add the dry pasta, water, and kosher salt to the Instant Pot insert. Dont stir the ingredients. Just place the lid on top and turn the steam release knob to sealing.

2| Use the Manual Pressure function to cook the pasta on high pressure for 5 minutes. The Instant Pot will take about 11-12 minutes to come to pressure before the actual cooking time begins.

    How To Reduce Pasta Foam

I’ve learned some great tips and tricks from all of you in the comments below, here is a summary of the knowledge I’ve gathered over time:

    • Add Fat
    • Oil or butter will reduce foaming. I add about 1 tablespoon per 8 ounces of pasta
  • Rinse pasta
  • Rinse the pasta 2 3 times before you cook it I wouldn’t say this is the perfect solution, but it does seem to help
  • Place a trivet over the pasta
  • As bubbles start to rise, the trivet will pop them and keep foam from reaching the valve. This doesn’t work perfectly every time either, but again, it seems to help especially if you use a slow pressure release
  • Intermittent Pressure Release
  • Turn knob to quickly release the pressure. If starchy water starts to spray through the valve, switch the knob to a sealed position, wait 30 seconds, then switch the valve back to release, repeating this process as many times as needed usually 2 -3 times
  • Slow Pressure Release
  • Turn the knob only slightly so the pressure is released slowly. This will take a bit longer but will cut down on foaming considerably and prevent overcooked pasta
  • My personal go-to method
  • Add fat, place a trivet over the pasta, use a quick release of the pressure and wait and see if there is going to be enough starchy water spraying out for me to want to close the knob again. Then I use the intermittent or slow-release method to release the remaining pressure.

How To Cook Pasta In A Slow Cooker

You can use slow cookers to make pasta as long as you dont mix the pasta in with the sauce and leave it sitting in the slow cooker for an extended period of time. Doing so will result in pasta that is mushy, soggy and unappetizing. For best results, keep the pasta separate until serving. Prepare whatever sauce or dish you are pairing with pasta in the slow cooker and then combine it with pasta that has been cooked al dente.
