How To Prep The Ribs

Easy INSTANT POT RIBS Recipe

To prep the ribs, wash and pat dry to remove any excess moisture. Check if the membrane is still there on the boney side, as usually it is already removed. However, if its still there, heres how you remove it:

Place the ribs upside down on a cutting board, and using a butter knife slide under the membrane on the back of the bone. It is a thin layer, so you dont need to go deep. Once you have loosened it, take a paper towel and grab onto it with one hand. Hold the ribs down with the other hand and gently pull on the membrane, It should come off easily.

What Do You Need To Make The Dry

The dry rub is what will add flavor to the ribs. I absolutely love my homemade dry rub recipe, its perfectly balanced when it comes to sweet and spicy. Also, it has some cinnamon and nutmeg that elevates the other flavors and just adds another layer of something that you cant really put a finger on, but you can taste its awesomeness. Here are all the spices that I have used:

The most common cuts of pork ribs are Spare Ribs, Baby Back Ribs, and St. Louis Style Ribs.

Spare Ribs are the cut of pork ribs from the bottom of the rib cage . The full slab of meat has straight & flat bones.

Its meaty, tender, and packed with porky flavors. In comparison, Spare Ribs are longer and a bigger cut of meat than baby back ribs and St. Louis Style Ribs, while likely being the least expensive!

Spare Ribs are really popular in Chinese cuisine especially the Spareribs with Black Bean Sauce!

Whereas, Baby Back Ribs are the cut of pork ribs from the top of the rib cage .

Is It Better To Slow Cook Or Pressure Cook

One isnt necessarily better than the other. Both slow cook and pressure cook have their own advantages and disadvantages.

What I love with slow cooking is you can leave it for long periods without worrying. I have left food slow cooking overnight so that when I wake up, the food is ready.

What I love with pressure cooking is it saves so much time! And with the Instant Pot, you can do multiple things on the same pot like sautéing before or air frying after on top of pressure cooking.

Spare Ribs Vs St Louis Style Ribs

How about St. Louis Style Ribs?

St. Louis Ribs are actually a part of Spare Ribs!

You simply trim off the flap, skirt, & rib tips from a rack of spare ribs to end up with a rack of St. Louis Style Ribs .

Compared to Baby Back Ribs, St. Louis Style Ribs have less meat, thinner, & flatter, but the meat is fattier & more flavorful!

When it comes to cooking ribs, using a pressure cooker is a great way to cut cooking time & difficulty out of the equation. But! Making ribs the easy way doesnt mean that you need to end up with ribs that are lacking in the flavor you develop when you cook them low & slow on a grill or smoker.

How To Cook Ribs In An Instant Pot

Last year my mom and dad gave away their grill. My dad had rebuilt that thing at least five times over the years, but as the grill got older as they have too, the good old Char Broil just really didnt see much grilling action anymore. So off to the trash heap it went.

However, my dads love affair with BBQ ribs will always remain strong. So when I was making my weekly meal prep plan that included taking dinner up to their house one night, I was thrilled to see baby back pork ribs were on sale and half price on my Kroger apps 2-day Digital Deal. So with the tap of my finger, the deal was added to my grocery list and off to the grocery store I went.

Because while my dad loves his ribs, he loves a deal even more. And the apple doesnt fall far from the tree.

What Is The Membrane On Ribs

Theres a thin layer of membrane on the back of the ribs. And its really chewy tough skin and very unappetizing after its cooked.

  • To remove this membrane, starting at one end of the rib rack, separate the skin from the meat using a sharp pairing knife. And then pull it with your hands all the way to the other end.

This will ensure you wont sink your teeth into tough chewy skin when youre ready to enjoy your ribs!

TIP: If the skin slips off easily, use a paper towel to hold the skin.

What Is An Instant Pot Natural Release

Doing a natural pressure release means that you just leave the Instant Pot alone after the cook time ends. Dont turn it off, dont move the steam valve, just let it sit there.

You want to allow the Instant Pot to naturally release the pressure when you are cooking ribs because a quick release can make the meat tough. A natural pressure release gives you tender pork ribs.

Let the pressure release naturally for 15 minutes and then quick release any remaining pressure, if youre cooking baby back ribs. For spare ribs allow for a full natural release, until the Instant Pot pin drops down.

For more information about releasing the pressure in your Instant Pot and much more, read my simple Instant Pot manual. Then try more of my best Instant Pot recipes!

How To Natural Release On An Instant Pot

When making an Instant Pot recipe, youll need to either quick release or natural release the pressure before opening it.

Natural release on the Instant Pot means you allow the pressure to gradually release without opening the valve.

Once your Instant Pot finishes the cooking, it will beep, and then it will start counting up on the keep warm mode. This recipe has a natural release time of 5 minutes so once the timer shows 5 minutes, you can then open the valve to release the rest of the pressure.

You can fit 2 to 3 racks of ribs into your Instant Pot if they are defrosted or fresh. Simply stand the ribs all the way around the outside in one big circle first, then place additional racks in a second circle on the inside. You can cut the slabs into smaller sections if it helps them to fit better. Mix up more of the spice mixture for each additional rack. Double the mix for 2 racks, triple for 3 racks of ribs.

Recipe Tips And Notes:

  • We love using this 6-QT Instant Pot. It has lots of options and is very useful for cooking.
  • Make sure to place the meat inside the pot. Then, put the homemade or barbecue sauce of your preference on top of them.
  • If there is a fat layer on them make sure that side is on top. It is possible that you will get a burn warning. This is because the fat is starting to cook off of the meat. But have no fear because the cooker is doing its job and it is just the built-up pressure inside of the cooker. If it does happen, open the cooker and just flip them, also you get a beautiful sear on that burnt side.
  • Once theyre in the cooker season them with salt and pepper generously.
  • Once cooked, pour some additional sauce on top of the meat to give them a nice coat on the top.
