How Dangerous Are Instant Pots

Instant Pot Explosions

Buyer beware Instant Pots, like all pressure cookers, can potentially explode and cause severe scalds and burns if they are used improperly. Unlike traditional stovetop pressure cookers, Instant Pots have a number of advanced safety features to help reduce the risk of explosions.

Using The Wrong Pressure Release

There are two ways to release the pressure after cooking in your Instant Pot: natural release and quick release. And yes, it does matter which one you use. Release the pressure too quickly when cooking foods with a lot of liquid and youll likely have a mess on your hands. On the other hand, there are some foods that benefit from quick pressure release so they dont overcook.

Follow this tip: Always keep a look-out for pressure release instructions in Instant Pot recipes, as this is a step that should be clearly indicated. Plan to use natural release when cooking meat, dried beans and legumes, rice, soup, and other foods that are mostly liquid, and opt for quick release for things like eggs, vegetables, delicate foods, or ingredients that dont benefit from additional cook time.

Insufficient Liquid In Instant Pot

New To The Instant Pot? Here

Generally, instant pots need a minimum of a cup of water to perform optimally and pressurize. Your instant pot might also start hissing in cases like this, and your food will not get prepared properly or fast. Also, this depends on your recipes as some will be just fine with ½ cup.

Liquid foods like tomato sauce are very dense and will need you to thin it out with water or broth before cooking it to get the best results.

In A Pressure Cooker What Is The Source Of The Noise

A pressure release valve is included with both stovetop and electric pressure cookers. Its this setting that causes the most commotion while the food is cooking.

To put it another way, a pressure release valve opens automatically when the pressure within your pressure cooker rises to an unmanageable level. Usually, its simply warm steam erupting from the device.

However, there is an additional manner in which stove-top pressure cookers may produce noise. Just like on the stove, the pressure cooker may start to produce a boiling sound since its resting on a burner thats supplying the heat source.

Stove-top pressure cookers made of thinner materials, such as aluminum, may tremble if the pressure builds up to a high enough level. The second, potentially hazardous way a pressure cooker may produce noise is if the lid is not well placed or if the silicone ring within the lid has worn out and is no longer functioning properly.

To prevent the lid from exploding, open the release valve immediately if you notice steam coming from the lids edge instead of the units release valve. Unplug the unit and get far from it in case the lid does burst.

Price Makes A Difference

When it comes to pressure cookers, you dont want the cheaper models if you can afford them better. Poor quality materials and fewer safety features can make them prone to accidents. Not only that, but the cheaper models often make more noise. With higher-end pressure cookers, the spring release makes less noise.

Use Multiple Buttons In A Cooking Session

What I love about the Instant Pot is that ALL the cooking for a meal can be done in the same inner pot. I will often use the Saute button to cook onions and garlic in avocado oil or lard, and then add the ingredients for a pressure cooking dish and use the Manual pressure cooking button. Once its done, I will use the Keep Warm button to keep the food warm until my family is ready to eat it.

If You Cook Using A Pressure Cooker Does It Create A Lot Of Noise

9 Instant Pot DON’TS! Tip Tuesday

Yes. When using a pressure cooker, be prepared for some background noise. Stovetop ones may produce noise around the rim of the lid or between the pot and the burner, while electric ones will mainly generate noise from the pressure release valve.

Stovetop pressure cookers like the Instant-Pot and electric pressure cookers like the Instant-Sauce are options to consider. When it comes to safety and ease of use, electronic tools win out over manual ones every time.

Simply stated, all you have to do is add your ingredients, close the lid, push a few buttons, and wait. Instead of relying on the stovetop pressure cooker to regulate the heat level, you are responsible for doing so. If you dont turn the heat off, itll become cold .

Use The Instant Pot Natural Release And Quick Release Accordingly

Both the quick release and Instant Pot natural release will stop food from cooking. But the quick release will release the pressure immediately, and food will stop cooking quickly. The natural release will gradually stop cooking the food.

When cooking vegetables or other foods that can get overcooked easily, use the quick release. When cooking a pot roast or other slow-cooked meals, use the natural release.

TIP: Use a towel, pot holder, or silicone gloves to turn the valve vent. When you switch the steam valve to vent, steam will come out hot and fast so protect your hands.

Incorrectly Seated Sealing Ring Or Gasket

If the sealing ring is placed incorrectly, steam can escape from the cooker and cause cooking to take longer. The lid of your Instant Pot must be installed properly if the ring around the sealing rack cannot be turned around, then the instant pot is not set properly.

Otherwise, steam can leak from the sides of the lid and make a clicking noise. The sealing ring can be easily identified by looking at the edges carefully.

Add More Liquid To Your Instant Pot

Some dishes and recipes would need more liquid than normal in your instant pot. Consider adding more brothy or water to the instant pot, so it performs optimally.

If your result after cooking is a dish that is too liquid or thin, a great solution is to use the Saute function so that the liquid will reduce and the food thickens. Alternatively, you can use items that act as thickeners, such as flour, potato flakes, and cornstarch.

Inspecting Your Instant Pot Before Each Use

1. Remove the stainless steel inner pot and look inside the instant pot base. You will see the heating element. The heating element should always be free of debris and dry before you use you the Instant Pot. After washing, I always dry my stainless steel inner pot thoroughly before returning it to the base unit.

2. Check that the silicone sealing ring is fitted properly onto the lid and is clean and free of tears.

3. Remove the steam release valve from the Instant Pot lid by gently pulling it straight up. Make sure it is clean and free of debris. Some foods, such as applesauce, pasta and oatmeal may froth and foam when you cook them and can clog the steam release valve. Check the steam release valve each time you use your Instant Pot. If it is dirty clean it under running water and then put it back on the Instant Pot lid.

4. Check the float valve to ensure it is clean and free of debris. Clean it with warm water as needed. You may place the lid under running water as needed to wash it.

Making sure that all parts of your Instant Pot are clean and in good working condition can help you to have the best success with pressure cooking. My post about the Instant Pot burn message tells you both how to prevent getting this warning and what to do if you do get a burn message.

Insufficient Liquid Inside The Instant Pot

What should I make first in my Instant Pot?

Another reason that can lead to your instant pot hissing is there must be insufficient liquid inside it. Instant pots usually require roughly a cup of water for giving optimal performance and pressure. In instances like these, your instant pot might also begin hissing and your food wont be correctly or quickly prepared. This also depends on your recipes because some are just going to be cooked well with 1â2 a cup of water. Liquid products such as tomato sauce are highly thick and need to be diluted with water or broth before boiling to provide the best possible results.

The Sealing Ring Or Gasket Is Not Seated Properly

A wrongly placed sealing ring creates space for the cookers steam to escape out and make cooking slower. If you cannot turn the ring around the sealing rack on your instant pot, its not set properly. This can make steam leak from the sides of your lid and make the hissing sound.

You can easily identify this by checking the edges carefully to see if the sealing ring is in place.

So Why Do Pressure Cookers Release Steam Through Their Lids

The reason why this question comes up a lot is that individuals most often associate the hissing noise with the sound of a tea kettle hitting its boiling point.

The idea here is that the water gets so hot within the tea kettle that it lifts the lid up, trying to be released, only to cause the whistling sound upon escaping. This noise signals to us that the water is ready to be used.

The pressure cooker works in a very similar manner but has one major difference the food inside isnât necessarily ready when your pressure cooker lets out steam unlike the tea kettle analogy above. In order to understand why pressure cookers release steam, first know how they work

A pressure cooker uses a form of liquid, such as water, stock, broth, or even wine, and traps the vapor that rises from the liquid in as steam.

How is the liquid trapped?

Your pressure cooker uses a seal between the lid and the bottom portion of the appliance. As more and more vapor rises, the pressure inside the cooker as well as the temperature of your liquid increases drastically. This increased temperature and pressure infuses the steam into the food, cooking your food in a fraction of the time that it would take using any other method.

Lets Review These 10 Safety Features Of Your Instant Pot:

1. Lid Close Detection

Your Instant Pot is smart. It knows if you have put the lid on correctly or not. If you havent, it wont allow the pressurization to start. So only the keep-warm and sauté buttons work with the lid off or not on correctly.

2. Leaky Lid Protection

As I said, your Instant Pot is pretty smart.

If you forgot to put the silicone sealing ring back on, or if the steam release isnt closed all the way, your Instant Pot wont fully pressurize.

Since it knows that cooking while releasing pressure at the same time could end up burning your food , it automatically switches to the Keep-warn setting when it senses a release of steam in the pressure cooking process.

3. Lid Lock under Pressure

The Instant Pot wont allow you to open the lid if you forgot to release the pressure first with the steam release valve. So no explosions or lid flying in the face.

4. Anti-blockage Vent

While your Instant Pot is cooking, sometimes food gets stuck on the steam release vent on the underside of your lid.

Thankfully, Instant Pot has a shield that prevents that from not allowing you to release the steam using the release valve when youre ready.

5. Automatic Temperature Control

When you select the mode of cooking, the Instant Pots thermostat automatically knows what range of temperature to go to, ensuring it never gets too high for the food youre preparing.

6. High-Temperature Warning

7. Extreme Temperature & Power Protection

8. Automatic Pressure Control
