For example, cut racks of ribs into 3 piece chunks. A whole rack won’t fit in your instant pot frozen solid. Same with thinks like Pork Shoulder. I often cut them into 4 chunks to ensure even cooking. Also easier to shred this way.

Same goes for things like chicken breasts. Don’t freeze the whole package in one big block. If you can freeze them as individual breasts, that is best.

The Size Of The Instant Pot Is Important

Keep in mind, reheating 1 portion of cold soup will not take as long as it will take to reheat a full turkey or chicken dinner. When you hear your friends and family talking about how they can reheat their food in an instant pot in 10 minutes or less, you should know that they are probably not having the same meal as yourself.

A few examples of heating foods in an instant pot:

    • A small portion of soup and sauce takes 1 minute
    • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in an instant pot will take 6 minutes
    • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 26 minutes
    • A whole chicken frozen with veggies can take up to 30 minutes
    • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in the instant pot will take 2 minutes
    • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 20 minutes

The size of the serving is what matters the most.

If you have food frozen in a silver foil container, simply placing it in the steamer shelf of the instant pot will allow the food to heat in no time despite the fact that you just took it out of the freezer. On the other hand, if you have a large dish of pasta frozen in a deep glass dish, it can take it at least 26 minutes to heat.

Can You Cook Frozen Meat in the Instant Pot? — Frozen Pot Roast, Pork Chops & Chicken

Pot roast recipes typically call for thawed beef. Since it can take up to a few days to fully thaw a roast, and weve all had those moments where we forgot to take the meat out of the freezer, I decided to find out if you could get incredibly tender roast beef using a frozen roast in the Instant Pot. The answer is a definite yes!

This roast is pull-apart tender and nobody will ever know that you forgot to defrost your roast in advance.

To make it, simply place your trivet in the bottom of the Instant Pot, add the frozen roast, pour the broth over the roast, sprinkle the seasoning over top, add the garlic and onion, cook it, and let it natural release for 30 minutes.

A quick note its important to pour the broth over the frozen roast rather than adding it to the bottom of the pot before adding the roast. The liquid thaws the edge of the roast just enough to allow the seasoning to stick to it. It makes the final result so delicious!

How Long To Cook Frozen Chicken In The Instant Pot

The cook time for boneless, skinless chicken breasts depends on the weight and thickness of the chicken breasts. Bone-in chicken will take longer to cook. Always cook chicken at high pressure.

The Instant Pot will take longer to reach pressure when you are cooking frozen foods as compared to non-frozen foods. When the contents of the pot are cold it takes longer to heat up and pressurize. So frozen chicken gets a few extra minutes of cook time while the pot comes to pressure.

When the cook time ends, allow the pressure to naturally release for 10 minutes. The chicken will continue to cook during this time.

Here are the estimated cook times for different sized pieces of boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

Instant Pot Cooking Times for Frozen Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts

    • small frozen chicken breasts cook 11-12 minutes at high pressure, plus 10 minutes natural release
    • medium frozen chicken breasts cook 13-14 minutes at high pressure, plus 10 minutes natural release
    • large frozen chicken breasts cook 16 minutes at high pressure, plus 10 minutes natural release

It is always good practice to use an instant read thermometer to check that the internal temperature of the thickest part of the chicken has reached a safe 165 degrees F.

    Put Meat On The Bottom

How to Cook Frozen Meat in the Instant Pot

Its not just pasta that should be on top order matters with the instant pot. In general, it works out best if you put meat on the bottom. Heres why anything that has sugars in it can burn if cooked too long. For example, if you are cooking a chuck roast that will require an hour of cooking, any ingredients with sugar might caramelize on the bottom. And tomato based sauces can definitely burn on the bottom too.

If youre cooking chicken and only need it to cook for 30 minutes, then you probably wont run into that problem.

When there is a lot of food that needs to be reheated, the best option for you is precooking it in a instant pot and then placing it in the oven. Other than that, if you have a frozen meal , you can cook the main meal in the instant pot while the sides get heated in the oven.

It takes longer for food to heat in an oven as compared to an instant pot. If you have a little more time on hand, thaw out your food and heat it in the oven.

Rule of thumb: If your meal takes 45 minutes to heat in an instant pot, it will take 1 hour to heat in the oven.
